Cam's New Lease on Life Journal (comments welcome!)

Wow Cam! You have been super busy the past few days. I hope you get some time to relax soon.

How is your DS's leg doing? Falling down the stadium stairs sounds so scary!:scared1: I bet his leg hurt something awful. :( Sending some healing :wizard: his way.

Hope you have a wonderful, relaxing :cloud9: weekend, WISH sis!

Wow Cam, you definitely have had your fill of activity recently. I hope things have calmed down a bit for you now that SO and DS's graduation are done.

I must say I am super impressed that in spite of it all you are still doing your crunches and push ups - Great job!

Wow, Cam! You certainly know how to stay busy!! I'm finally getting caught up on journals....slowly!

I can't wait til October so I can finally give you that hug in person! You're AWESOME!!

Hang in there & have a good rest of the week & weekend!

I haven't had time to post here in a while, especially since I've been trying to keep up with the weekly training thread and the weight loss while training thread, as well as keeping track of fitness and nutrition on sparkpeople!

Here is my post from Friday about the race I did on 6/21:
keenercam said:
What a disaster. I'd leave it at that but feel I should share my misery with my most avid supporters. Here is what I did wrong:
I forgot to eat at 5 like I was going to. It got to 5:45 and I realized I was so hungry I was nauseous (insert confused smiley here). I had to leave to get to the race start so I was glad to have and eat a powerbar.

I had 72 oz water at work, so I shouldn't have felt dehydrated. But I arrived at the start feeling feverish and I noticed in the ladies room that my face was red. Not good. Howard said his car told him it was 84 degrees out or something like that. Very humid.
The start was mobbed. They delayed the start because the registration line was down the block. Someone estimate 1000 people but I don't think it was that many. But it was a LOT.

I couldn't even tell when I got to the start, so I just started my timer and started jogging. Huge hill in the first mile. Get to mile marker 1 and my garmin says 1.2. What? Howard told me later that the cop who was directing had us all turn the wrong way at the first corner so we went the long way. Part of it was on an access road, very bad terrain for running and very dangerous for someone who can only feel the terrain and not see it. I was concentrating so hard on keeping my footing. Actually had to walk on the entire cobblestone hill because the toe of my sneaker kept catching in the cobblestones and I couldn't see where they were uneven and protruding.

Mile 2 was completely all hill. Everyone was complaining. I haven't felt in a long time like I should just bag it in the middle of a 5k. I truly felt like I needed to sit down. My face was coated with sweat & salt. ICK!

Mile 3 -- I convinced myself to just get it done. It is pretty disappointing, though, in a hard race when your Garmin says you've hit 5k and yet you know you are pretty far from the end still.

Here are my splits on my Garmin measure of the 5k:
mile 1 -- 12:55
Mile 2 --14:17
Mile 3 -- 15:09
.1 --pace 11:25
overall time for 5k -- 43:30.

real distance, according to my Garmin -- 3.32 mi --46:06 -- avg pace 13:54.

The official results say 45:59, I think, with a 14:50 overall pace.

I dropped a note to the race director complaining about the distance -- he said actual distance was .25 mile over. I also pointed out how unfair it was to post only the first 525 participants' results, leaving out the final 185. I hadn't realized the race committee gets charged per participant whose results are posted (you learn something new every day), and since it was a benefit they didn't necessarily want any of the results posted so the money could go to the family who the race was to benefit. The race director posted the results on his own time (maybe at no charge?) and stopped at 525. I was #516 out of 710 finishers. Still not pretty, but that's a long way from DLF and my first 5k pace of 17:36, and most important of all? It's done.

Since that race, I hadn't had time to do any treadmill training. I have kept up my 100 crunches and 100 push-ups per day and hit 50 days as of this morning's workout. I have done 50 days in a row and have done a total of 5000 pushups and 5025 crunches! I think the results are pretty apparent in my arms and shoulders and above my pantyline. I still haven't figured out what kind of exercise will help me get rid of the sparetire I carry around under the belly button area.

Yesterday, I decided to get back to basics with weight watchers and to get back on the flex plan. According to WW, I am supposed to have 23 points per day. That seems like a lot, but I guess it is pretty much in line with what sparkpeople recommends. According to sparkpeople, I took in less than 1100 calories yesterday and I burned more than 500 so the loss on the scale this morning didn't surprise me. I just WISH it weren't so fleeting. ;)

According to WW, I only had 20/23 points yesterday and I earned an additional 5 points at the gym. Gym workout yesterday was 60 minutes on the treadmill (4.31 miles; 445 calories) and then 100 crunches, 100 pushups and 20 sidebends on the swiss ball on each side and some hamstring stretches and wheelbarrows on the ball.

I should definitely go to WW tonight and weigh in and get back in the groove. I always think I'd be better off spending that hour at the gym, but I think I do need the support and accountability of meetings/weigh ins. UGH!

Food today:
B: coffee w/skim milk; watermelon; apple slices
L: whole bag of lettuce; grape tomatoes; WW lasagna bolognese
S: LC panini (on the way to the gym)
D: extra lean ground beef w/mushrooms & onions over 1/2 cup whole wheat couscous
Dessert: watermelon chunks

 Cam,

Good job on finishing the race! :thumbsup2 Despite not feeling well and the distance issue, you still finished the race. I am so proud of you!

Are you feeling better today? I sure hope so.:goodvibes

Have a great Wednesday!

Thank you, Tracy! I am feeling great and renewed today. I definitely link level of my mood with how well I am staying on plan and how much exercise I am getting. Since it feels like I am back on track, I am having a great day! :goodvibes

Sorry the 5K was so messed up! Sounds like pretty poor planning.

I never thought of the SF Beans & Rice over lettuce. I'll have to try that! I LOVE the Boca veg chili w/ lettuce, so I bet I'd like it.

Hope you got to the gym!

Thanks, Julie! I had a very satisfying, though difficult time at the gym last night. It was so stuffy and I just can't get over how much I have been perspiring during this week's workouts. Very strange!

Food today:
B: coffee w/skim milk; 2 hard-boiled egg whites; 1 sl FF cheddar; 1 light MG EM
S: cut pineapple; cut watermelon
L: turkey, lettuce, tomato, mustard on whole wheat bread
S: watermelon, pineapple
D: extra lean ground beef w/mushrooms & onions; steamed broccoli; salad
dessert: WW choc chip cookie dough sundae; 94% FF popcorn (tons)

Great job, Cam! Keep up the good work!:cheer2:

Is it very humid where you live? For the past couple of days, it has been extremely humid here. I've just looked at exercise equipment and have been sweating like crazy!:lmao:

Have a great day WISH sis!

Thanks, Tracy!
Yes, it has been really humid here. Howard has been trying to run at 6 or 6:15 a.m. and already at that early hour the air is so thick that it is hard to breathe. UGH! I, on the other hand, am content to stick to the gym, not that it is going to get any cooler outside and I don't know how I am going to manage the Chicago heat and humidity on 8/12 if I don't start conditioning myself to it now! :rotfl:

No workout last night. We watched a good movie "Breach" instead. Fascinating, especially since my college majors were international affairs & government & law. The kids liked it, too, though DDalmost19 made a point of saying that Ryan Philippe/"eye candy" kept her watching until it got interesting! :rotfl:

I ate wayyy too much 94% FF popcorn last night, after a weight watchers chocolate chip cookie dough sundae! The scale showed just how filling that popcorn could be, too!

I'll try to get to the gym tonight for my LW, since tomorrow is crazy busy --
8 a.m. -- meet with kitchen designer to pick out cabinet & drawer hardware
9 a.m. -- hair appt
noon -- barbecue/pool party at friends' house 45 minutes away
bring DS14 home and get on the road by 4:30 or 5 to Philadelphia for Tim McGraw/Faith Hill concert. YAY!!!

Sunday, we may be able to get out to shop for an evening gown for me for our cruise. I really should work all day, though, so we'll see how events unfold.

Food today:
B: 2 slices whole wheat toast; coffee w/skim milk
L: lettuce tomato cucumber salad; turkey chili poured over top (maybe)
S: banana
D (before gym): LC panini

-------------------------------
Friday night's workout -- 40 minutes on the elliptical

Sounds like you have a busy weekend ahead, but then again, when don't you??

Your cruise is coming up fast now. Good luck dress shopping! I hope you have more luck than I did. We petite gals who aren't also a size 2 seem to have troubles!

Wow Cam your exercise looks awesome! :)
Love the dress!
I always sweat a lot in the gym, its always my head!!! My hair is wet through by the time i'm finished!!
Wheres the weight loss whilst training thread? Could do with a look at that.
Have a great weekend, it looks like you've got some fun stuff lined up :)
