Calling all Princesses! (2014 Princess Half Marathon Weekend)- thread #2

Now my major problem is chaffing. Trying to come up with a solution. I'm ok on short runs, but my long runs are killing me. Tried body glide today, and wearing boyshorts underwear to add a layer of protection, but they underwear doesn't go far enough down the leg. I ordered a couple of other pairs to try... anyone have any good tricks? I will try just about anything!

I had my first REALLY bad case of severe chafing (in 6 years of running) at WDW half last month. So bad, because of the hot/humid weather, that I was actually bleeding--even with Body Glide. So I went to the UA outlet and picked up a pair of compression shorts. They have about a 6-7" inseam and so cover the major chafe area. I have tried them on a 14 miler since then and they work. Also, my husband, a hard core cyclist, swears by A&D ointment, which I will also try.

in a pinch, i have used my kid's A&D and it does work! the only problem is that it seems to stain. but definitely works.

i always wear capris so that my thighs don't chafe. my biggest chafing problem is all over the bra area, especially the bottom and the straps. body glide helps, and if you feel like you're chafing during the race, you can stop at a med tent for a glob of vaseline. i won't admit where i had to put some around mile 19 of the marathon last month :rolleyes1

Any pink coast to coast princesses out there struggling a bit with motivation lately? I love running, I really do. But sometimes getting out the door (or as has been the case lately, onto the treadmill) is harder than the actual run. I feel like I've been training FOREVER! I started last summer training for wine and dine, then Tink, now GSC. I need some mental tricks I think. I am going to play w music today but 9 miles tomorrow seems just, exhausting when I think about it.

Anyhow- having bibs and corral is exciting. Maybe ill work on a costume or tutu this weekend. I wasn't going to dress up but perhaps that's what I need....

I swear by Nike Pro compression shorts under my running shorts. That actually reminds me that I need to buy a new pair before I leave for the trip because mine are too big/stretched out now and don't stay in place anymore. They still prevent chaffing but it's almost more annoying constantly having to pull them down when they bunch up. Lol

I'm not C2C, but I totally hear you on the constant training. After the WDW full, I told my coach I need an off-season! These early-season (or extremely late-season, depending on how you look at them) races really don't give us much of a chance for down time. Princess will be more of a "fun" race for me, and then I don't have anything scheduled for March, before triathlon season starts for me in April. And I already decided that next year I'm going to forego the January races. Nothing big for me after mid-October, then I'm looking at a March marathon.

I need to get cracking on my costume for the half. Fortunately, for the 10K I'm pretty much wearing my marathon outfit again, but I have a mental picture of what I want for the half but none of it is executed yet. It's always fun to have something relevant to focus on that's not the running itself.

I would imagine with three halfs in 4 months that it would start to get mentally tough to keep training. In good news, your body is already pretty well conditioned to run Princess even if you slack on training a bit. I would suggest mixing it up. Put together a brand new playlist, take a new fitness class, hit the pool, drive out to a brand new area for a long run…make a costume, like you said! I never run in costume but I am totally, sort of ;) doing it for Princess with running shorts and shirt that fit with a character's colors.

And then sign up for something shorter and fun for the spring. I'm dreaming of 10k training as I head into these final weeks. It helps me get through my long runs to count them down. Only two to go after this weekend!!!

I'm run/walking the 10K alone and the 5K with my sister, we're staying at AK... I'm freaking out about the 10K  ...I've come down with the flu so training is at a stand still and because I didn't have a race time to give I know I'll be in the last corral. I desperately don't want to be swept! :sad2:

Zefyr, I know how you feel. My plantar fasciitis has flared up in one heel so I am not going to run for at least a week and hopefully, it will begin to heal.

You should be fine. I see that you have run some 5ks and a 10k and you have been training. What is your average per mile time?

Are there corrals for the 10k? If so, are they posted yet?

I've seen some comments about corrals for it, but I don;t see anything on the rundisney website.

47 degrees here today - yippee! 10.5 miles in just over 2 hrs and I still feel human. Yay!!:cheer2:

Thanks to all you princesses for your advice and encouragement! And so grateful for that convenient portapotty at the construction site at mile 7. Lucky break
:yay:

I am looking for running buddies in the 5k. My bib number is 5298 (I haven't been able to find any corral placements for the 5K). Anyone else have a bib close to that?

Thanks on the chafing notes everyone.

I wear capris, and my thighs are ok, it's up in the nether regions, and wear the seams hit that are proving tricky. I was using body glide, but it just didn't give enough protection. I will give the A&D and possibly vaseline a try.

It's going to be almost 40degrees tomorrow! Yippee... :cool1: 11 miles (I hope) outside.

So - on a long run... at what point(s) do you usually grab a gel/chew etc...? I was thinking about mile 8...

I grab a gel at 5 miles, which on an easy-ish long run is 45 minutes. When I race a half, I have one on the go halfway through.

Mfr recommendation is usually on the 30-45 minute range, but I aim for 45-60 min.

You aren't alone! I'm a fellow CT'er and I'll be towards the back of the 10K.
We just need to maintain our pace, especially for the first 1/2. We can do this!!

I found that for myself, 6 miles and 9 miles were good on my 11 mile run. I tried to fuel before I felt that I needed it. The first long run I did I waited until mile 8 to fuel and I felt it was to late.

I was at the under Armour store the other day and they make UA underwear now that is their wicking material. I'm very tempted to get some.

I meant to post earlier, but it's been a busy birthday week. :-)

I am so excited that my husband has agreed to get up at 5:00 in the morning every Tuesday and Thursday until the race to do my short runs with me. We started this past Thursday (my birthday). Also, he has agreed to do the WDW half marathon with me in costume next January! (He is not usually a costume person, so I was very surprised!) :lovestruc So excited!

Side note: looking forward to trying Under Armor wicking heat gear! Thanks for the tip.

Awwwww. That's sweet! I just told my DH that I'm going to have to start going to bed way earlier the next few weeks to start to prepare for the GSC weekend. I am not a morning person at all and need the encouragement to turn the lights out early! I'm going to try to do all my runs from here out in the morning too, to prepare. At least it will be done for the day!

Still haven't made a costume. If I'm going to I probably should before next weeks last long run. Speaking of, I better get running now. I added some new songs per the suggestion of a fellow poster and I'm excited! I added Katy Perry's unconditionally to my list, it feels empowering and energizing to me the same way Let It Go from frozen does!

3 Weeks!!!

I feel you!! I've been having a little trouble with my ankle, and that combined with this awful weather has messed up my training. I'm only doing the 10k but I'm getting nervous! My plan was to run 6.2 miles this morning and I only got done with 5k before I had to stop because of my ankle :headache:
