Anyone having trouble with Norton AntiVirus Software. Mine was working fine, until all of sudden it stopped. The only thing different that I've done to my computer was back on Th 8/21 when I downloaded a MS patch for IE, but NAV & LiveUpdate were working fine then.

It's now kinda stuck in *refreshing* mode & the other windows, like the Scan is blank.

I tried NAV's automated support & found it to be useless. Telephone Tech Support isn't open until next week. :(

My NAV software is paid for as well as my subscription for LiveUpdate.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

You may have a virus that shut it down. Some viruses disable your virus software. There have been alot more updates, on a daily basis, for every virus software plus MS is putting out patches every day for all these new viruses. I would update everything today, and try again.

Thanks for your reply.

Would you please explain what you mean by "update everything today, and try again"? Thanks again.

Go into Norton's click on options set everything to off that is set to on now. Then go out of Norton's, next go back in Norton's and set everything back to on that was on before. It should take care of your problem.

First let me ask, have you tried shutting down your computer completely, waiting about a minute and then rebooting? That might fix the problem. Otherwise,

I don't use Norton, I use McAfee, so I can only say in those terms. McAfee had virus definition files (.dat files) that you can download to update your virus software. They have been putting out new .dat files on a daily basis, so I imagine Norton does the same thing at their website. Also, Microsoft has been putting out new updates every day. I use Windows XP and have it set to automatically let me know when a new update comes out. When the window pops up telling me there are new updates, I just tell it to download. I have been getting a new window from MS now almost every day for two weeks. I don't know what version of Windows you use, but if you go to microsofts website, I'm sure there is a place to update. Same at Norton.

Once you download the updates, reboot and see what happens.

If that doesn't fix it, you'll probably have to wait until Norton phone help opens.

check and see if you have any pending anti virus patches in windows update.
There was another major worm that hit end of last week/early this week. If you didn't download this past Wednesday's patch, it is entirely possible you are affected

Do any critical windows updates , reboot, and try a Norton scan again

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately clicking on the "Options" tab brings up a completely blank page...there's no *options* to set anymore. :(

Do you still have your Norton's CD? Try going into control panel and click on add and remove software once in there choose norton's and the repair option.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!! :)

I haven't quite been able to fix it, though. [Sorry this is long]

I think it's the MS IE patch that is causing the problem.

I have GoBack software, so I reverted my hard drive to before I downloaded the MS IE patch. Then the NAV was fine! I did a virus scan & all was OK -- no viruses. Then I tried to download the MS IE patch again & everything was wrong again! UGH! I got a warning after restarting my computer after the patch was downloaded that went something like this:

"MS IE: Your current security settings prohibilt running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly."

When I check NAV after this, it wasn't working again...just like before...it was stuck in *refreshing* the other pages were blank, etc. I tried to correct the security settings for Active X in MS IE, but still no good, even after restart. :(

So, I reverted the hard drive 1 more time, to before I downloaded the MS IE patch again...& everything is back to normal...only problem is I don't have the MS IE patch.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again for all your help.

Comcast sent me an email with detailed instructions on how to install the Windows patch and run Norton Antivirus (not that we'd needed the explanation, but it was awlfully nice for them to do that). The email does state that if you don't follow the steps correctly you could have more problems. I still have the email if you'd like me to forward it to you.

What version of IE and which patch? Try going to Microsoft.com / Support. Then search for norton antivirus. See if there are any technote on it. I had multiple PCs that had NAV and I installed IE 6 patch and they all work fine. I wonder if you install the wrong patch for IE (did you click on Windows Update and let it determine which patch for you? Or did you manually download them?)

Also, can you go directly to Symantec.com and download the update? If not, try reinstalling NAV and see if that helps.

And since you can reverse back, I'd just leave iet as is. IMHO NAV is more important than IE patch, even if it's critical.

Thanks EVERYONE again for all your interest & help.

MS says it's a *Critical Update.* I have automatic notifcation for critical updates on my pc. I was notified from MS of the update. I've never had a problem doing this before. I just let it tell me what *critical update* I need, which is:

"August 2003, Cumulative Patch for IE 6 service pack 1 [822925]
Security issues identified in MS IE could allow an attacker to compromise systems w/IE installed [even if IE is not used as the Web browser].... "

I just did what I normally do...clicked *Install Now* ... then restart, then the other problem seemed to begin.

NAV seems to have a horrible tech support system...I didn't realize it before. It is an online *automated* system, which put me thru a few questions & came up w/no real solutions & no *human* tech support available.

BTW, I did not notice any tech notes about NAV on the patch.

iNTeNSeBLue98 Thanks for your offer to email the info...I'll pm you if I need it.

I am pressed for time this weekend...isn't that always when computer problems seem to happen? I'll try again tomorrow & check back in here.

THANKS AGAIN!!! :)
