Cake Bake Shop at the BoardWalk is now open

Maybe a dumb question here. What’s the protocol/etiquette with making an OpenTable reservation for one more than I really need? It shows very little options for 2, but if switch to 3 tons of times show up. I know this is sometimes noted as a method for Disney ADRs, not sure the same would apply here or if that’s just “not the right thing to do” with an upscale third-party run restaurant?

And I guess by the nature of my question, I am admitting to at least wanting to try this place! 😎

Ewww Frozen? That’s not good at all

Almost all professional cakes are frozen at some point for ease of decorating and transport. Freezing is a pretty standard practice in baking to maintain texture/shape/workability of doughs and finished products.

Question for people more experienced with baking; I see a bunch of mentions of "European-style" and the reference to European-style butter.

I know that US and European palettes can be very different, especially when it comes to sweets. I would be interested to know if reviews that say things are more bland/not strong in flavor is a result of US foods being more sugary in general. And, thus, for people from European countries if they enjoy it more because they find it closer to what they would receive back home.

The response about butterfat difference is true but for baking it is what the butterfat is replacing that is important. European butters (and Australian/Kiwi for that matter) have a lower water content allowing for more predictable and uniform results. Especially for pastries that require lamination. Where I am from there is a special import duty deduction for bakeries/patisseries to import butter from Europe for commercial use because of the difference it makes in finished products.

ff anyone is interested in seeing another review, Kat from 2 Foolish Mortals on YT did a REALLY great comparison of Gideon's and CBS. She got a chocolate chip cookie and slice of red velvet cake from both places and a slice of their most popular cake from each venue. She made sure to taste the cake and frostings alone before eating it as a whole bite making it a very interesting comparison.

Obviously not for Cake Bake yet, but I use Open Table for restaurants at home & in Disney Springs. I have had to make reservations for 4 once or twice when I only needed it for 2. I think I just told them when we checked in that it would only be 2 with no issue. I noticed the lack of reservations for 2 here also. I fully prepared to do the same thing. 😉

Server said they are going to going to start supplying the cakes on the Disney cruise ships now. CB is in partnership with Disney
That sounds ridiculous unless they don’t bake their own stuff on their ships? SO much more expensive to bake in the US and transport it aboard a ship- and what about ships not departing FL?… idk. This sounds off…

Yea I thought the same thing. Logistics are just too complex and Osceola Commercial kitchen is not big enough to support the Cruise business.

Given that Open Table restaurants are mostly independent of each other, I doubt that there’s an overall protocol or etiquette that applies to all of them. So I’d book for 3 and then just tell them there are only two of you when you arrive, as @focusondisney does. I’m sure the restaurant would rather have three or four people at that 4-top table, but I don’t think they’ll turn you away.

We do it all the time and not just with Disney restaurants. It will be fine!

So the sever was a liar?
Well that's a big jump from just being miss-informed or wrong. You are asking if the server out right lied to you which I doubt. Why would they. It was more likely just like a Disney Bus driver they are just chatting with you.

Only way to know for sure is if / when there are reports of CBS cakes showing up on the Disney Cruises.

They said it sounds ridiculous. Keeping it real. Not a big jump. You have someone who works for the company versus an opinionated person saying they are wrong

It does sound ridiculous. How long has this Server been at CBS? 30 days at best.

How many of those small CBS cakes would it take for a single cruise vs having the onboard pastry team make large batches of large fresh cakes daily. The logistics alone make it nearly impossible to manage at CBS price points.

Dave

We have to apply logic. Servers and bus drivers don't have advance information. The commercial bakery in Kissimmee can't supply a significant supply of cakes to DCL.

It's possible DCL will start to serve cake bake products. Limited variety, shipped frozen, possibly with an upcharge.

More likely, if there is any truth...
Gwendolyn could develop recipes to be baked on the ship. Train the baking staff

This is what I was thinking too, probably frozen & served at the top, upcharge restaurant only. I know almost nothing about the cruise lines. The 1 I know is Palo, so that’s the restaurant type I’m referring to, assuming each ship has this kind of place.

DCL sells up charge treats (candy/desserts) on board. I'd be willing to bet that is where CBS cakes will be sold (if this is true).

Longer term reservations are now available on Open Table, just made one for late November (last week reservations were available for a week in advance).
Great catch. The OpenTable calendar currently goes through Dec. 4th for CBS and they should add a day at time until or unless they chose to add more than 30 days worth of reservations.

Yay, thank you! Just made a reservation for my MVMCP day. Late lunch, so it will be my big meal of the day but still leave plenty of room for snacks at the party. :santa::cool1:
