Bypass on Main Street?

Last year they opened what was to become this pathway for overflow/bypass during the taping. Back then it was horrible, but they opened it anyway. You can count on them doing the same thing this year.
What was horrible ..the crowds

Pardon me, I made that post on the go. I was talking about the theming. You basically walked between some cones on a parking lot and they had a banner up that said some Disney slogan. That was it. No theming or landscaping. I remember being horrified when a saw the pictures. If they were willing to open it up then, it's almost certain they'd open it now.

I'll make it more clear in my original post.

Even if Disney is going to use this "as needed" IT NEEDS TO BE FULLY THEMED!!! It could be SO NICE! Keep the magic there at all times! A high fence, some fake grass, twinkling lights and Disney topiaries! Instant Magic Kingdom backyard!!!

The problem with fully theming (Grass, topiaries, maybe some nice things to see like signs) is that you run the risk of people constantly stopping to look, or if you have grass, sit. This is meant to be a route to move people quickly, compared to Main Street where it is always stop and go. They don't want to clog another route up.

It is themed...

Good point.

We used the bypass two nights last week. I LOVE it. We were in the Wishes FP+ area in front of the Plaza. Ducked into the bypass after Wishes, beat the crowd to the ferry, and were back in our beds at Universal by 11:30 PM.

It's "themed" in that it reminds me of a park, but doesn't invite people to stop and linger. There simply aren't enough people using it to make it a clog point and there are no benches or anywhere else to sit and while it's nice, it's not particularly interesting...who wants to sit and look a green wall or some boring plants? It's also only open occasionally, so it isn't like people can just come in and sit down.

I'm so confused by this statement. Have you been on the bypass? I was on it last Saturday and it is now complete. It IS nicely themed, with light fixtures that match what's on Main Street and pretty landscaping. They even had Halloween decorations up. It looks nothing like the pictures up thread. I'll go through my camera and see if I took any pictures, but I'm not sure that I did. It looks like a nice, clean, meticulous walkway. Nothing more, nothing less. What they did with it is perfect, IMO.

I have been forced by cast members to use it twice and was pissed i couldnt stroll down main street. I almost feel like they need to lower the capacity of the park to try and maintain the guest experience. Instead it seems like they just keep removing landscape and adding concrete to increase the parks capacity. My concern is when will this stop? When the parks are basically a parking lot with show buildings? I know a lot of people are going to disagree with this but I think they need to decrease the capacity of MK to improve the guest experience and ultimately build a 5th gate to relive congestion at all the parks.

Disney lower the capacity of the park?!? That's lost revenue they would never! (End of sarcasm)

MK wouldn't be such a major attendance getter if Disney could get there other three parks up to that level. Adding more to the other three would help spread out crowds. Disney is only just starting to get that.

Another thing that might help disperse crowds throughout the resort to lessen the load on MK is to start this tiered pricing depending on time of year, week, etc. That way, they could maybe lessen crowds a bit and still be able to roll around in their piles of money.

It HAS been about a year or so for me. Last I saw there were just a few plants tossed up to help hide the backstage and to guide the path a bit. I would love to see a pic if you can find it!

Disney will love you...

or they could just add another nighttime show....as Frozen Fireworks in the Studios or the upcoming ROL in AK. Spread out all the late night watchers.

Add a nighttime show where? Epcot has one, MK has three of you count the parade, AK will soon have one and DHS has one with a second coming soon.

I think you missed the point of my message. I was telling them that Disney was already doing something to help the crowd at MK for wishes by adding the two nighttime shows that either have already been added or are about ready to add. In other words, Wishes crowds will be thinned quite a bit when AK opens late and has ROL.

I really don't think it's ever been intended as an "alternate Main Street" and in fact Disney want most people to continue using Main Street because of all the shops there. The goal of the bypass is to give people a quick way in and out. That in itself is the draw. So putting stores or even windows on it would rather defeat the purpose because while it won't increase the crowd it creates the logjams of people standing around looking at things instead of walking.

That's not exactly what I'm saying... My original post was in response to the people who felt the bypass looks cheap or should be better themed, but currently you only see it and use it as a quick exit from the park, usually at night, so there isn't any real need to worry about how it looks because it doesn't get used/seen all that that often. The only reason for more elaborate themeing would be "IF" they made it "more than just a bypass". "IF" it was a full time open area/mini land, "IF" they had an attraction back in that area and some shops to go with it, that would justify spending more money on themed architecture, and that would be a reason to keep the area open all the time.

Basically, I don't think they are going to spend any more money making the part time bypass look prettier, they only reason to invest money in that area of the park is if they can make money and add capacity by adding shops and attractions back there like this 1975 plan for Disneyland, and there is a lot more space in the Magic Kingdom for something like a mini-land than there is in Disneyland

But i still doubt this. MK is getting 19-20 million a year. AK is getting just over 10. Rivers of light isnt going get 5+ million to come over too AK.
