I'm really really wanting to replace my 15 year old sewing machine for this one. I've been eyeing it for years now, but I've never used an embroidery machine (my current machine is bare bones basic - no fancy stiches or anything). I love that it has disney embroidery options - is this the only machine that has this.
If anyone can give me any insights, I'd love it. I'm hoping Santa will take my endless hints this year and bring it :)

i bought mine and used it 3 times before it tore up :( i didn't use it the first few months , so i couldn't return it to the store. it is sitting in the back of my closet now. i sew pageant clothing, so i am not new at using sewing machines either lol

Where else do you go for used stuff that no one wants any more - ebay, of course :rotfl:
That said, I really dont like buying such big/expensive things off ebay so I'm leery of it.
I wonder why they dont make it anymore.

I think there are several different models available.

Go to Brother.com and find them. I have a Brother Ultimate D2002. It allows for the larger hoops and allows me to download designs and stitch them out. Some of the machines only allow you to purchase the actual card (with all the designs even if you only wanted one) and only stitch out 4x4".

I would suggest going to a Brother dealer in your area and looking at the various models and asking what the differences are.

I have one and so far it works great but is very picky on what type of thread I use. There have been very mixed reviews for this machine, so I guess I am lucky. I only use it for the embroidery and not sewing though.

If you get your machine, make sure to visit www.sewforum.com. There are alot of great digitizers there that provide free designs. You will need to get the PED-Basic software for the machine, but then you can download designs, save them to the card, and put the card in the machine to stitch out the designs. Otherwise, you are limited to the designs on the machine or buying expensive cards with preloaded designs.

I got my machine from Costco.com last year for $389 and it came with the PED-BAsic.

Hi:
Brother is the only machine that has Disney approval for their embroidery designs. Disney is copyrighted.

If you really want to get into embroidery I would suggest buying the best machine you can afford. The Brother you are talking about only has a 4x4 hoop (that's the biggest design you will ever stitch on that machine). I highly recommend investing in a machine that does at least a 5x7. Although, after embroidering for two year's now I really want a machine that will hold a much larger hoop (it makes it so much easier to embroider sweatshirts etc.).

I second SewForum. There are also many, many forums devoted to each machine just google search. They are the people who will give you an unbiased opinion of the machine you are interested in.

Happy stitching!

There is also a thread here on the art & crafts sub board about this machine. I have had one for several years now, but moved up to a Babylock Ellure for the 5x7 hoop, but kept this for Disney stuff. Agree with a PP about the thread pickiness, truly if you're used to sewing on better machines this will be a step down for you. I can so tell a fifference when I use my Babylock, I went with them because they use the same embroidery format as Brother, so all of my designs work except for the Disney Cards.

Here's the thread:

I have a Brother 8500D with Disney designs and I LOVE it. It is a discontinued model, but you may be able to find used ones out there. Since it isn't the current model, you may be able to find deals on one. I would avoid a 4x4 only machine as well. They don't have the ability to combine designs at the same time (do a picture and write a name under it)--you'd have to do it at separate times and try to line it back up. I'd make sure I get one with at least some on-screen editing.

Also, the previous poster was right. Brother is the only company that has a license for Disney designs. Any Brother machine with a model number ending in the letter D will come with pre-loaded Disney designs and will be able to use the Disney embroidery cards. No other brand of machine will work (and no Brother machine that doesn't end in D will work for Disney either). Besides, Brothers are really easy to use :-)=

I love my Brother 180D. I have 4 extra cards and now almost all my clothes has a disney character on it some where :lmao: . I just wish I had waited to get the bigger machine so that I could do a larger printing area.
You can not use it for regular sewing though if you are wanting a machine that you can use to make or repair clothing this is not the machine for you. It only does the fancy embroidery.
