Break Even Point on Food Delivery

Was posting on another thread and thought I'd ask this question.

At what point does it make more sense to have food delivered vs picking up supplies at the resort? Not just from a DVC point of view. And whether or not you have no fridge (value), microwave (studio), full kitchen (various) would impact on what and how much you order.

I don't see any point in ordering things you could get at the convenience store...wouldn't the delivery charge offset any savings? Unless of course you drink a lot of ...anything other than tap water.

Discuss.

This past time was the first I hadn't brought things from home. I did feel like I racked up quite a bill of groceries at convenience store prices, but on the other hand, I sure didn't have to lug a bunch of food home, either, like I normally do. The most egregious markup was on alcohol and coffee, I thought. Alcohol I'm definitely getting offsite whenever possible.

So for a few nights, I could get by with what the offer onsite. For any more, I'd want to get things from Publix.

Hi: We've stopped in the past (either in the rental car or town car) on the way from the airport for some groceries and alcohol. Mainly, we buy breakfast items, snacks, and bottled water. Having gardengrocer deliver to us on the February trip was very easy. We had a large group(22), so we easily bypassed the $10 delivery charge. Even if we did have to pay the $10 delivery charge, it is still worth it for the time saved.

Think I'm going to do a "dry run" to our local grocery store and purchase what we'd want for a week-long stay at DVC. With a couple of bottles of wine, I'm fairly confident we'd make it over the $50 minimum for Garden Grocer, but I should at least attempt it to make sure.

For us, the $10 delivery fee is well worth it. No rental car = $200 savings (at least!). No shuttle/limo service = well, I don't know, but certainly more than $10. We can use ME and have groceries delivered or waiting for us. No worrying about what the on-site store carries, no "when are you going to the store, dear?" conversations. Yes, WELL worth $10 in my world. :thumbsup2

This Garden Grocer is new to me. Is it run through a web site? I was convinced that I would need to towncar rather than ME due to the need for a grocery stop. I would love to avoid the extra stop if delivery is available, particularly on arrival day when everyone is excited about hitting the parks. Any insight on available delivery services would be appreciated. :3dglasses

The two that get the most press here are Gardengrocer and WEGOSHOP. They both deliver to WDW resorts and except CC's or Paypal(I think). They have websites if you need to check them out. We are using GardenGrocer this trip...smjj

I'm trying to decide the same thing. GardenGrocer's prices seem somewhat high compared to a grocery store. We're staying in a studio so won't have much room for food. After the delivery fee and upcharge for groceries I'm not sure we'd come out ahead.

How do their prices compare to the stores at the resorts? Does Disney have a sight that shows prices?

I've used http://www.wegoshop.com three times with great results. They give you the receipt so you know exactly what the costs were. They didn't take cc but did take an out of state personal check or cash. I liked that I could be specific with what brands I wanted. Definitely worth the service charge and the tip.

WDWorld2003 - www.dvcmember.com has a shopping list that you can look at
I believe those prices are the same as the market at the resort. So I think it all depends on how much and what you need to determine the break even point. If you only want a few snacking items but not lunch or breakfast food than the resort store would be okay but if you want to do lunches and more than boxed donuts then shopping elsewhere would save enough money to make it worth it. BTW DH has found that Hess' minimart just across from BWV to have great prices compared to the resort store for bottled H2o, soda, chips, fruit and beer. He jokes that he never thought he would get excited about prices at a convenience store but compared to WDW prices Hess' are cheap! :rotfl2:
