We try very hard every year not to borrow points, but we always seem to borrow a few. We aren't completely borrowed out, but can't seem to live on our current year allotment. We do trade out (Alaska, DCL, AKL), which hurts, but still would hope to plan better. I was wondering what the average DVC member does, so decided to post the poll.

Sorry to throw off your poll but I'm one of those people who own points at three separate resorts (BWV<, VWL and BCV). Two of them are set up in such a way so that we intentionally bank and borrow so that we can stay at one, one year and one the next. We always stay at the BWV each year. Then every other year stay at the others. So with at least one we are in a constant state or borrowing but it is planned.

My home resort is BCV and I have 300-points.

I borrowed last year, so I could have a two-bedroom for my family and put my parents in a studio for one week.

This year I will borrow so I have enough points at BCV for a week in a 2-bedroom.

Next year, I will just spend a few days at WDW and will take a Disney cruise, not using points. After 2005, I will be back in a situation where I do not have to borrow.

I may also buy additional points. ::MickeyMo

I borrowed next years points and rented them out for a cruise. The renter wanted more points the than I needed to pay for the cruise so I will use the rest for our AP's. We will borrow alittle bit for our trip before our cruise. 2006 will be DH and my 10 year anniversary so I think that year we will go somewhere else and catch up then.

I have 42 OKW points to bank later in the year.

I have borrowed 10 SSR points from our 2005 allotment.

So, techincally when everything is added together I do have 32 points to bank:smooth:

I had 10 points which needed to be used by 05/31/04 (June use year) and needed to borrow the rest for our trip next month for graduation. We will be staying in a 2-BR. I may end up banking the remaining points since I don't think we'll take another trip this year - but then again, I'll hold off on banking until the last minute just in case another trip home is necessary! lol Annmarie

Could not vote on your poll - some of our contracts have banked points and some have borrowed

thanks

We've had to borrow a few points each year, and again this year because we're taking extra family members next week.

We did a second add-on last year to get enough to keep from borrowing. I think this seems to be the norm with DVCers. You borrow, you buy more points, you borrow again, so you buy more points!

We have a slightly different approach: We hope to exchange IN and bank the points every few years.

We own fewer points than needed for our annual BWV stay. So ... every now and then we'll hope to exchange INTO DVC (using a different property through II), bank 100% of that year's points ... then draw against those points for a few years of reservations ... and repeat the cycle.

Example:
* Exchange into BWV for 1BR unit in Jan-05 (successfully booked in MAR-04 through II)
* Bank 100% of our OCT-04 points (150pts)
* Use 200 DVC points for JAN-06 ressie; bank 100 pts
* Use 200 DVC points for JAN-07 ressie; bank 50 pts
* Use 200 DVC points for JAN-08 ressie
* Exchange into BWV for JAN-09 and bank 100% of OCT-08 points
* etc.

Sounds good on paper ... hope it works out in real life! :D

(If it doesn't work out ... we'll be alternating between studio vs 1BR units. That would work ... but wouldn't be quite as fun!)

I understand the multiple contracts with different borrow/bank conflict. We have 4 contracts and always bank points from some and borrow from another - stay at Boardwalk more this year, then VWL the next. The vote in the poll would reflect the net - borrowed more in one vs banked less in another or visa versa.

We also have points banked and borrowed on different contracts.

We usually bank our points, and then use all the banked and some of the current year. In the past we've banked a whole year, used them and all current, and borrowed most of next year. Took 6 other people with us that time. We are doing the same in Dec 2005, but we have some we will not be able to bank, they're already banked into 2004. So we may be taking a trip to Disneyland. My DW has never been, and wants to see what it's like.

I can't vote because none of the answers fit my situation. We try to only bank, but because we own at two resorts, we do borrow also. Right now, I have borrowed almost all of Aug 2006 BCV for a March 2005 trip and will probably bank the remaining and banked about a quarter of Aug 2004 BWV into 2005. For our upcoming Dec 2004 trip, we had banked some BWV 2003 points.

So, my vote is - we do both when we need to!

I had to borrow 44 points because our next trip starts in May, and our use year is June... a little risky. If we have to cancel our trip, I'll lose my 44 points.

That said, we started out our DVC relationship completely on borrowed points, bacuase if Magical Beginnings . It took 4 years to get caught up. Now we're current. In fact we'll probably bank a few points into '05.

Like some other folks here, we have 2 contracts - 200 pts @ BWV and 174 pts @ HH. We always work with one contract or the other, so we bank and borrow every year. I consider this "good" borrowing though :p !

We are new owners and have borrowed points already. We have only 200 points and in our upcoming trip are taking friends with us, therefore, we need larger accommodations. In the future we hope to not have to borrow points and also hope to remedy this by purchasing more points when we can afford it.

We would like to continue to have friends and family join us.

MB almost put us in the hole too, but I was able to use MB on only half my points and bank the other half.

This year we have enough points for 8 nights at BCV in a 2 bdr and did not have to borrow. Some people are not aware they can do this and since I purchased in Aug. 2003, I only had to pay 4 months dues on the points that I kept.

I have multiple contracts also and will use borrowing for alternate stays.

I'm two contracts. Both banked a few points from this year. One banked a few after next year, the other borrowed a few more.

I actually try to borrow as much as possible. I see it as insurance in case there is a period of time we cannot make it to WDW. I figure in 2042 Ill never miss it.

We have borrowed about 70 points from next years points...we have 450 points all at the BCV. I really don't have any qualms about borrowing...I remember someone posting that the last year of DVC using points is problematic anyway. I will be 93 years old and that is definately problematic. I figure that something will happen sometime that will prevent a trip, and I will get caught up. This is one thing that I won't worry about.
