sounds really iffy.. Have you ever gotten better options/prices there? can you be specific about what you found? did you see better prices/options and think twice about booking in advance?

Ideally for Alaska cruise, but I'm curious about others as well.

As a CM, finding something at the port was really our only option. Although, I only did it in Juneau (Skagway I went dog sledding and the train, but thats different again, and the only thing I did in Ketchikan was go to the lumberjack show and buy candy...)

In Juneau we did whale watching (I did that twice) and Mendenhall Glacier. In Juneau they have lots of stands where the bus drops you off, their all offering the same things, go to one and if you don't like the price or options, then next one will offer you something different. We found them good (in Alaska, never too dodgy like other ports). We were able to make it fit around us e.g, there's 5 of us, we want to go to the glacier, come back via Walmart and we need to be back by... and Im pretty sure that was less than $10 each (as crew).

They offer things like whale watching, variations of dog sledding, glacier trips, wildlife tours, rafting, kayaking, pretty much anything, and you can find something for every budget. As long as you're not too bothered what you want to do it can be fun way to spend a day, but if there is something you definitely want to do, book in advance and pay the extra because you cant guarantee who's going to be there offering what on the day, or how quickly they might fill up.
There's not as many options in Skagway, I guess because its small, and I don't remember many excursions being offered, although we did try and find something at the info centre but there wasn't anything for our time frame, but there were quite a lot of options in Juneau and Ketchikan.

Once one of my excursions was canceled due to weather conditions (I was going scuba diving) and someone at the port offered to take me diving. It was a better price than DCL offered but I was like thanks but "no" thanks. Other times while heading out on excursions I've seen people holding up signs offering tours at a much better rate but I feel more comfortable using DCL.

Thoughts...
  • I remember seeing excursion vendors outside of Ketchikan and Skagway. But Juneau's AJ dock is a mile away from the main vendors at the central dock. Is there a Juneau AJ dock shuttle? Is there a cost? I went with DCL excursions that met me at the boat.
  • Because Juneau's AJ dock is so far away.... consider combo excursions (whale watch with Mendenhall) to save time in not returning to the ship and/or town.
  • Personally, I mix cruise excursions with private ones. I start with combo cruise excursion to get priority debarkation and then use private excursions to fill my time when I get back in town/dock.
  • Juneau's tram is the only one I don't recommend booking from the boat. If there's low cloud... you don't want to go up.
  • Here's some excursion vids for activity ideas....

When we were in Juneau, you got off the ship onto a free shuttle that was 5 minutes (max) into town, where it dropped you off right by the vendors/tramway. Busses were constant there and back to the ship until all aboard.
It might not be the case but thats what they did for the seasons I did.

We sailed Celebrity last summer in Alaska, and booked our Juneau Mendenhall/Whale Watching trip at one of the booths. We were only going to get bus tickets to Mendenhall, but they quoted us a great price to add on the whale watching - and we didn't have that planned anywhere else, so we went for it. I'm *soo* glad we did - it was one of the highlights of our trip!

Other ports we visited:
  • Ketchiken - Tour operators do have booths near the docks. We probably could have booked stuff off the ship here - all we actually paid for was the Lumberjack Show, and you can get tickets from them directly - but we used OBC to pay for that "tour" so it made sense to book through the ship.
  • Skagway - I didn't see any tour operators selling tours in port in Skagway. We had a ship's tour - canoeing to Davidson Glacier (awesome!) - that we could have booked direct, but the price was the same as through the cruise line.
  • Icy Strait Point - They only allow one ship in per day, and they sell tours directly once you get off the ship (the same tours the ship sells). We used OBC for a ship tour again in this port, so I don't know what the pricing differemce would be to book in port, but there seemed to be plenty of availability!

When I was there in Ketchikan 2014.... the Wonder was docked in Berth 1. There was flightseeing operators in a booth on the way downtown to the Lumberjack show. More tour operators were inside the visitor centre between Berth 2 and 3.
