Biggest Loser Run/Walker Thread 2012/13--Everyone Welcome! :)

Hey everyone! Great job on the 10K Rose! I have my 8K in September and I am hoping for an hour.
I ran twice while on vacation in Houston. :yay:
My first run on Thursday was great and DH came with me. Saturday was not to good. I was not eating as well as I should have and it showed! I had to stop at 30 minutes and I had planed to run for 40.
I went to run today and my foot was really bothering me so I just walked. I went 4 miles though. I will try again Wednesday. I have a 5K Saturday so I don't want to push it too much and hurt myself. I found the official time from my 5K a few weeks ago. 39:02 so that is my time to bet on Saturday!

I have completely fallen off the run/walk wagon and this week isn't looking any more promising. DH left for DC today so I need to get everyone up at 5, leave at 5:30 and drop DS16 off for 6. Then I have to be back at school to get DS16 and drop DS11 off for camp.
I'm typing as I eat. Not good!!!

Maybe I will have DS16 help me unbury the treadmill, maybe I can get something in. Right now though, all I want to do is take a nap.

Hi everyone,

We're back! My running plans for our vacation were derailed along with our cruise, unfortunately, but I did maintain my weight, mostly. :cool1: I had planned to do the CC 5K on the cruise, twice...ended up walking about 2 miles on the first CC stop. That was the day DH was flown off to Nassau, and that walk was my morning break from the medical center. Oy. Our hotel was in downtown Nassau, so outdoor running wasn't feasible. The hotel had a fitness center, but we were so busy back and forth to the hospital and keeping the kids entertained that I never got there.

When we got to AKL on Friday, I decided I'd get something going. Then the sore throat started...fortunately, that appears to only have been a voice strain from doing so much talking over the previous days (doctors, home, DH's boss...). So Monday morning I ran back and forth between Jambo House and Kidani Village. I went 3 miles, my time was relatively lousy, but I got out there!

We drove home Friday and Saturday and arrived to 100+ temps. The heat broke yesterday, and I went out last night - much better with the sun setting and 80-degree temps! 3.53 miles at a 10:46 pace (10 min walking, 28 min jogging). That was my C25K week 8/day 1. When I finish this training app, I think I'm going to move to the Galloway 10-miler plan - the Tower of Terror run suddenly seems a lot closer than it did before we went away...

Hi everyone!

I was battling illness for the last month. A cold turned into a chest cough. I finally went to the doctor and got antibiotics and feel so much better. I didn't run the whole month, I was feeling too cruddy. As soon as I felt better, I started running again. One run later, it was time for my fourth of July four miler. I decided to give it a shot anyway, and ended up with a PR!

It was a hot day and I am not adjusted to running in the heat. I kept a decent pace the first 3 miles and then bonked. I wasn't surprised, it had been so long since I had run. It was the first time I had done it in a race, though, so it was a new experience for me. I typically hold back and am used to having a good kick at the end. But it wasn't there. I took it easy on the last mile and still finished almost 3 minutes faster than last year (no chip time, just gun time so its hard to have an exact time). I kept just over a 14mm pace, which I felt was as good as I could do considering the heat and lack of training. Its good to know that I still maintained some fitness and am still making progress. I am going to smash that PR next time, though!

So I went ahead and registered for the Tink in Januray to keep my legacy status. As of yesterday, its 92% full if anyone out there is considering this race. I highly recommend it, it was a fantastic race and a good first half marathon for me. I am happy to be able to register for this race, it is much easier for me to afford, especially since we are moving to norcal soon. I am very bummed about missing marathon weekend. I was so looking forward to seeing everyone and attending the massive WISH meet. I will have to follow along here and I can't wait to hear all about it. I hope in the future marathon weekend and the Tink will occasionally be 2 weeks apart instead of one so it will be easier for me to attend. If anyone wants to get their C2C at DL in September 2013, I will be there!

I'd love to do the W&D, but have to wait until our moving plans are settled before I know if I can afford it. I know its 86% full and have resigned myself to the fact it may sell out before I know if I can register. My DH wants to do this race too and is already talking about saving for next year if we can't make it this year. :)

I hope everyone out there is surviving the heat. I saw Princess registration opened today, is anyone considering this race? There are lots of experienced Princesses on this thread if anyone has any questions.

Happy Birthday to Lisah! princess:
I know I am posting a day early, but didn't want to forget! I hope you have a great day!

Liz--I am glad you made it home safe and sound! You all had quite the adventure. Hopefully everyone in your house will stay healthy. I commend you for trying to keep up with the exercise/healthy eating while on your trip!

Amanda--Is your race this weekend? I hope your foot cooperates.:goodvibes

Buffy--I hope you can find that treadmill!:goodvibes

LisaR-- Congrats on the PR! I'm sorry you bonked. Sometimes I think we all need some downtime--though downtime through illness is not fun! Congrats on registering for the Tink! I will probably do Princess again--especially after last year's craptastic trip. It has to be better, right?;) I'm not quite ready to commit yet. I am still hoping you can make W&D.:)

AFM, I decided to shake things up a bit. I have changed up my exercise schedule and added in some doubles. I just have a lot going on in my brain right now and need the distraction/stress relief. So far it seems to be working.:goodvibes

Here's the schedule I started last Thursday. Though to be honest, I skipped Monday's workout. I was tired!

M--piyo
T--run am/ cardioblast pm (this class is brutal and I was sweatier than after my 4 mile run!)
W--zumba and piyo
R--run am/ cardioblast pm (the second one I will play be ear and see how I feel)
F--zumba
S--long run
Sun--off

Hope everyone is doing well!

Amanda, great job on running in Houston on vacation and good luck with your 5K this week-end! :thumbsup2

Buffy, don't worry about the runs you've missed. Just continue with your training and you will be fine. Plenty of time to make some fabulous progress! :goodvibes

Liz, I'm so sorry that your vacation was so stressful. Sounds like you did a great job making the most of a bad situation. You are speedy even in the heat at home. Take it easy! :flower3:

Congrats to Rose, Dottie and Lisa on their great races last week! :yay: You guys totally :rockband: running in the heat!

Lisa, I'm going to miss seeing you at WDW and at the Tink. :tink: I'll keep my fingers crossed for the W&D. pixiedust:

Happy Birthday to Lisah! princess:
I know I am posting a day early, but didn't want to forget! I hope you have a great day!

Thanks for the birthday wishes, Rose!

That is an amazing exercise schedule you have going this week. :worship:

I'm using walking at Disneyland as my long run this week-end. I'm sure I'll manage to get 10 miles in. ;) I have a reunion that I am going to so it is a quick, quick trip.

I went for a run on the dreadmill today. My foot was feeling fine so here's hoping it's good to me on Saturday! I have Zumba tomorrow and I'll probably walk again on Friday since the 5K is Saturday.

Still haven't run. I've been taking a nap every day. These early mornings are killing this night person!

DS16 and I will go for a run Saturday, he didn't go to practice today so he needs to make up 6 miles. I will do 3.

I found out what the bugs are!! Deer flies, and OMG they are awful!!
we have a run meet here in Blink every Monday and they were everywhere. The guys like to run with no shirts and they were covered in huge welts. I need to see if bug spray will keep them at bay.

Hi ladies,

rode my bike mon -26 miles, ran my first offical training run for the W/D tues 4.5 miles and rode my bike today 18 miles, tomorrow I'll run another 4-5 miles then DS and I have a 5k trail race on Saturday. My rides and runs have been a great distraction for everything else going on.

I'm hoping to register for the Princess before the cost increase in September but have to play it by ear for right now- concentrating on the W/D and the MArathon.

Went for a walk today while DS did his Thursday night run. He did 5 miles, I did 3.43 in 61 minutes. I mostly walked but we have 2 short hills and I ran up those just to get a little speed work in. I actually felt pretty good, not before but after. Before I felt like a big fat blob, after I felt more like my old new self.
I used runkeeper and it actually worked!!!! LOL It has a habit of crashing on me but this time it worked the whole time.
I was worried my battery was going to die so I waited a little bit to walk so it could charge in the car. I probably cold have gotten 2 more laps around the lake in, but almost 3 1/2 miles was great.

My shins and calves were really sore after about mile 1, but loosened up about mile 2. Uphill and flat were good with my feet, but downhill I was heel striking really bad, and they weren't even steep inclines, maybe 1/2 - 1 degree. I think I was over compensating for my shin and calf pain because after about 2.5 miles it was getting a little better, and I was trying to focus more on correcting my form instead of my pace, kind of a downfall of runkeeper is hearing how fast or slow you are going, I had to stop racing myself.
On lap 2 and 4 I caught up with the runners doing the 5K and I found myself moving a little quicker, my how the mind changes when people are racing in the same general direction as you (they were on a different path).

All in all it was good to be back in the saddle again. I need to learn not to get sidetracked with the kids schedules, DH not being here and not trying to bug my mom. I need to do this for me.

Ah, it's a process!!!

Hi everyone!

Got out for another C25K workout last night - 5m walk, 28m jog, 5m walk - 3.48 miles! Tomorrow night will be week 8, day 3. Next week, I'm planning on transitioning to the Galloway training plan for the ToT 10-miler. So I'll make the last two C25K workouts the two 30-minute runs, and then I'll start in with a long weekend run - I hope! We'll be at MIL's that weekend, so I just need to get somewhere with a track or a good path.

I'm going to treat myself to a Garmin watch this week, too. I have a nano for music, and it'll be nice to ditch the armband and the iPhone, especially for these longer runs. I haven't been taking water out with me yet, but I have a little Nathan handheld...time to start working with that, I think!

It's been good to get back into the swing of things after our trip. I haven't worked in my strength stuff yet, but I'll get there - Ripped in 30 is queued up in the DVD player! I did that one last winter and am going to run through it again.

XO

Everyone is doing so well! :thumbsup2

My leg is feeling much better, finally. I've been using the foam roller & tennis ball religiously, icing after workouts, using a heating pad, using a stand-up desk at work and taking ibuprofen on schedule.

This week I had the first heavy workout for my legs since April with my trainer and it went really well. A little stiff and sore but I was so excited. This morning I did about 3.5 miles, running about 2.5 of it. I feel good! :cool1:

Rose, could you please add the Seafair Torchlight 5K for me on July 28th and The Great Kilt Run (5K) on August 4th.

Thank you! :goodvibes

Hi ladies.

I have not really been getting in the DIS time like I used to so I am now trying to make up for that. I am starting my next half training tomorrow so I thought this is a better time than any to jump back on here so you all can keep me inspired.

I read back a few pages and am so impressed and blown away by everyones determination. You all are doing so great.

I have lost some weight since my last half so my goal is to keep loosing and hopefully have a PR at my half in Oct.

I think I am going to try to run more than walk this half. I typically would do a 3/2 during my race. I followed the MFM RUN/Walk program for my other 3 halfs and that is the ratio I felt most comfortable with. This time I am going to follow the RUN plan and see how I do. If I find as I go its making me slower I will change my plan.

I hope you all had a great weekend.:goodvibes

Hello runner folks! :wave2:

Hope everyone is staying cool and having a great summer. :cool2:

Does anyone else subscribe to the Active.com emails? I thought that that group might find this article about Half Marathon Pacing interesting. http://www.active.com/running/Articles/Half-Marathon-Pacing-Strategies.htm

I personally have a very hard time finishing strong because I am so tired by the end of the half I just can't go faster and get to the point where I don't care that I can't go faster 'cause by then I've already convinced myself I'm never doing it again. :lmao: (That is why I always register for the next race before I hit the starting line of the current race ;))

Have a great running week and stay cool! :hippie:

Hi everyone!

I hit a major (for me) milestone tonight - I finished my C25K program! :cool1: I hit the 5K distance a while ago, but I wanted to keep going through the end of the program. The last three workouts were the 5m walk, 30m run, 5m walk pieces, and it was amazing to me that I've come so far to be able to do that three times over in the space of a week!

Now I'm moving to the Galloway program for the ToT. I'm picking it up where it is now, and so this weekend will be a long run. I think I can swing it...here goes!

I can't believe that I went from "Why would you run if no-one was chasing you?" to "Bring on the half marathon!" in such a short span of time. But I feel great, and my newfound running habit is a BIG reason why. Yay!

Alice--I added your races!

I am going to try to add dates to races from here on now so we know when to cheer! So if you give me the date when you add a race, that will help.

If I missed adding something recently please let me know.

Congratulations Liz on finishing C25K! :cool1: Did you end up getting a Garmin?

Thanks for sharing the article Lisah!

Great to see you Lindsay! I am playing around with intervals for January. Right now I am liking run 4 walk 1. We'll see.:goodvibes

Dottie--thinking about you today.

Hi to everyone else! Hope everyone is getting in some good runs this summer.

I am still getting used to my new shoes, but overall I really like them. I am having no leg problems at all and my ankle is feeling great--which for me is a HUGE deal. My plantar-fasciitis is flaring up a bit, but that could be a symptom of my calves getting used to the new running style. I am feeling pretty comfortable that it will eventually work itself out.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and if anyone is racing, Good Luck!:goodvibes

Completely got derailed this month between the weather, taking care of my parents house while they are over seas and the kids camps. Next week I am starting from the beginning.

Thankfully Galloway's official training doesn't start until September.

Hi! I did buy myself a Garmin last week. I programmed some Galloway-friendly intervals and took it out this morning...and I made the 7 miles on the ToT schedule!! I'm beyond excited! I wasn't sure I could jump my distance like that, but it actually felt great - I had *such* the runner's high afterward. And I went farther than DH... ;) woohoo!

So I'm loving the Garmin combined with my iPod nano for music. :)

We're at MIL's for the weekend, too, so I wasn't totally sure we'd get out today. I'm so happpeeeee!

Sorry I have been MIA, lots going on in my world- looks like I havent gotten to far behind though. I haven't been very consistant with my short runs -none this past week and only 1 in for the two previous weeks- I have stuck to my long runs and managed 6 last week until a rouge armidillo crossed my path at 6 am-and scared the begeesus outa me- did 7 1/2 yesterday morning - feeling good- hoping things will settle down this week so I can get back to my short runs- W/D will be here before I know it- then it's marathon time baby!:thumbsup2

I did the Seafair Torchlight 5K last night with a friend - what a fun time! By long-standing tradition, runners are encouraged to dress as pirates or clowns, so of course, we ran as pirates. pirate:

I did improve my time over my last race, which is good, but I think I could have done better and am upset because I didn't run my race.

I was reminded last night of how much of a beginner I still am. I'm really disappointed in myself - not for being a beginner! - but because what little knowledge I do have, I didn't use.

In the two days leading up to the race I didn't eat well enough or correctly, didn't hydrate well and let myself get caught up in my friends anxiety for her first race. (She's overall much more fit than I am, but hasn't ran much at all.) Even on race day, I didn't eat like I should as I was rushed.

My friend went tearing out at the start (she smoked her 1st race though, 8:45 minute pace!) and I tried to follow up the first hill.

That's all it took. :guilty:

Couldn't get my breathing right, my stride was off, I felt like a fish flopping on the end of a hook. I thought I was going to die in the 1st half of the race, lol.

I forced myself to walk, even though by that time I was on the parade route and I heard a few people yell "Hey - this is a run!" etc. (Though there were many people also yelling "Good job, you can do it!" :thumbsup2 )

I did the last mile pretty well and was strong up the finishing hill but still felt discombobulated.

Now I know that until I am stronger and more fit, I need to focus on myself and my race. It's fun going to the runs in groups or with friends but I need to train to my strengths, run my race and then we can all party afterwards, in whatever order our personal races lead us to the finish line.

I'm excited to continue on the journey - just need to get past this little hill of disappointment. ;)
