Biggest Loser Run/Walker Thread 2012/13--Everyone Welcome! :)

Anyone else from the San Antonio area I just found the San Antonio Road Runners club. The have a free, open to the public fun run the first Saturday of each month. I am so excited I found this! They do three runs a half mile, a mile and a three mile. I'm going on the 7th and plan on doing all three.
They also do a 2 mile zoo run every Wednesday evening. I am going to try to make that this week.
I have been looking for more runs to do and free ones are great for me!
If you are in the San Antonio area and haven't check out their website.

Can I please have Beach Run 5K added for July. It is going to be held on the Air Force base and I am pretty excited for it. I think they have a 5K about every 6 weeks so I may be doing more in the future. They let the basic trainees run in formation which is what I did back in 2007 when I was in basic.

So much for the getting better part - I slipped and fell and now the leg is injured worse than before. :sad2: Arrggghhh!!! I need to make a PT appointment and see where this is going to take me. :scared:

I have just become so irritated over this stupid leg injury - tired of the pain, tired of not being able to get in training runs or even get in good work outs. :headache: Sorry for whining but sheesh, it's been 2 months already! I've been getting massage therapy, not stretching cold and have been using the foam roller before and after every work out. It is slowly getting better.

Anyway - enough of the pity party! Im leaving tomorrow to go visit my Dsis and we're doing a 5K in the neighborhood where we grew up. :) I don't think I'll run the whole thing but we'll have fun. :cool1:

I'm so sorry to hear that Alice.

Can you maybe take a break from running like Liz had to when she broke her toe? I know she did the bike. Can you maybe do the bike, elliptical, or swim?

Thanks Buffy! Probably that's what I'm going to have to do. Keep the impact down and the chances of hitting uneven ground. I did fairly well on the bike and doing an easy swim today. I "walked" several laps in the pool, too, and that felt pretty good!

So sorry to hear of your injury, Alice. Lots of good thoughts and pixiedust: that it heals quickly. It is frustrating when it happens but you do retain a level of fitness much longer than you realize. When I injured my back this winter I was in PT for 6 weeks but still was able to finish my half at the end of May. One of the Ironmen this week-end was coming off any injury and said he was surprised at how rested he felt.

I'm so sorry to hear that Alice.

I was thinking of Liz, too, when I saw Alice's post. Liz is off on the podcast cruise but may have some words of wisdom for you, too, Alice.

Have been very busy at work so not so much Distime. My training is going well. I got to do speed work for the first time since January on Saturday. I also downloaded Galloway's new 13.1 app from Lolofit. It has two different programs (one for new runners and one to improve time), GPS, BeatSync (takes your music and adjusts the BPM to your pace -- but it still sounds good, not like the Chipmunks), a variety of intervals, and coaching throughout. it was little spendy for an app $13.99 but that is about what I pay for a pair of socks and I get a lot more out of it. I've only used it for a couple of work outs but if you have any questions let me know.

Have a great week everyone! :goodvibes

Oh thanks for the info on the 13.1. I have the 5K app and it actually continued to work today, usually it crashes on me.
I did better than I thought I would. Today was just a 30 minute training session so I did 1/1 intervals. DS15 went with me, we paced at first but he was sore from practice this morning so I took off ahead and he stayed walking. He said it seemed like my distance with each run was getting farther away, but to me it felt like I was slowing down.
I got around the green in 23 minutes including warm up and cool down. So 1.56 miles in 23:32 my average speed was 3.97 and my pace was 15.1

I was pretty happy with that. Could I do it for 12 or 25 more miles? Not right now but I might actually have a shot at something. I think I could for sure do the 1/2.

Now I need to get over the embarrassment of running! On the green it's ok even when cars drive by because it's so spread out, but I couldn't bring myself to run the tack at school because the boys are conditioning for XC and not that they are judgmental, they are truly awesome kids, but in my mind I'm like they are runners, I'm a wanna be runner. I need to get over that.

Buffy, there is a support team for Lolo that might be able to help you.

I know it is hard to get over how you look out there but you can do it. :thumbsup2 I think a bunch of nice guys like that might admire you for getting out there and giving it a try instead of sitting on the bleachers. :goodvibes They might even give you some tips. :cool2:

I was thinking about that last night actually. I wonder of they would give me tips.
The funny thing is, I've known their coach for 20+ years, we used to go to Middle school and High school together. And he's run countless marathons but he's not really forthcoming with tips. It's weird!

I don't know, maybe I'll ask them.

How is everyone? I apologize for being missing this week.

I think I have mostly updated the first page, but please remind me again if I am missing anything.

So we have a couple of races coming up in July:
July
Beach Run 5k--Amanda
BlueGrass 10k--Rose
Coach Blanchette Memorial 5k--Jen
Run For the Fourth--Lisa (liesel)

I am a little nervous about my 10k next week. It is nasty hot here (over a 100). This morning when I got up at 6:30 it was 80. But as hot as it was yesterday, that actually felt cool.:rotfl: I have been having a little bit of an issue this summer with getting overheated. My last two long runs I have ended up with a bit of nausea and a nasty headache. So I will be hitting the gatorade this weekend, watching my grown up drink consumption, and making sure I start the race hydrated.

Alice--I am really sorry about the continued injury issues. Last year I developed itbs in early March and spent basically the rest of the year injured. Over the course of a year I went to p-t three times (once with a chiropractor). It was incredibly frustrating and I wanted to quit so many times. I still don't think I am 100%, but overall am happy with where I am at for a 40something runner. What I will say is that making it through those injuries and still sticking with it has been a huge accomplishment for me. I feel like I have developed a mental toughness (at least as far as my running goes, maybe not in the rest of my life:thumbsup2) that I didn't have before. You can definitely maintain fitness levels with pool running, the elliptical and the bike (if you can do those). Hang in there.

Ok, I am giving up on going back and doing replies, but I will try to keep up better this week.:goodvibes

So here's a random Question of the Week?

How are you handling the heat?

I will be honest. Not well. In the past we would have been up and running at 6:00am to avoid the heat. I have been having to drag myself out of bed and have been paying the consequences for bad choices as I mentioned earlier. This week I did better. I got up Tuesday and Thursday morning for my runs rather than wait until the evenings. Tomorrow we are only running 4 since we are doing a 10k on Wednesday, but I am setting the alarm for 6:00am. I am working on my fluid intake both increasing it and making sure I am not drinking too many things that dehydrate me. We will put water in the freezer for our run this weekend--it is nice and cold as it melts.:goodvibes

Have a great Friday!

Yikes, I forgot this thread existed!

My running has mostly been on the treadmill this past week, only doing a couple miles, I've been doing faster intervals though.

We were blessed with pretty decent and nice weather up until this week so last week I was doing a few miles in the evening, however it's too hot for me to go out now. I'm a wimp.

The Color Run is tomorrow. I dont' know if anyone else does, but do you have nightmares that you either missed your race or something to do with that? A few months ago I had a dream where a couple people were telling me I'd never make it through a half blah blah. Then I had a dream where it was half race day and I was completely late and didn't make it and yada yada. Then last night I had a dream that I woke up late and completely missed the color run, I was pretty much in tears and as soon as I woke up I sighed with relief that it wasn't real! So much stress, I guess!

There is a 10k next month that I may possibly sign up for...
Have a great day!

Wow we have a lot of brave July racers! :cool2:

Kayla, good luck on your Color Run tomorrow. They do look like a ton of fun.

I think everyone has those funky weird racing dreams. To me they are a lot like the exam anxiety dreams. :cloud9:

So here's a random Question of the Week?

How are you handling the heat?

Well, one of the good things about not having summer until the last week of June is that heat has not been a problem in my neck of the woods. :umbrella:

Jeff Galloway just did a blog this week on running in the heat that you might want to check out. http://feeds.feedburner.com/JeffGallowaysBlog

Pouring water on your head is a big help to feeling cooler. Anyone ever tried those cooling towels? This may be the time to do that. :sunny:

Rose, could you please add my birthday to the list? July 11

Thanks! :flower3:

Checking in from vacation...I got 3.3 miles in at the Boardwalk before we left on our cruise. I was going to do the CC 5K twice, but fate had other ideas. DH became ill overnight on our first night aboard the Dream and was airlifted off to Nassau on our first CC day. DDs and I joined him in Nassau the next day. He was fortunately released from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon, and we are right now awaiting our flight back to Orlando from the Bahamas. We're going to jump-start this vacation at WDW today. We are all so disappointed about having to miss almost all of our cruise, but there are obviously things much more important! We'll book another cruise...

So of course I haven't run in a week now, but I'll hopefully get a couple in while we're at AKL over the next week. And I need a massage like nobody's business. But I am so proud of myself for not stress eating - I had one quarter pounder with cheese meltdown but otherwise stayed on track. That was a first for me!

XO from the Bahamas for a few more minutes,
Liz

I'm not doing well with it at all! Drinking lots of water but not much running. We hit 105 this week. Monday was the last time I ran although I have gotten in a lot of exercise this week. It just gets so hot and our apartment is hard to keep cool so I just don't want to do anything! :sad2: I'm going to say it here so I have to follow through-I am going to get in 3 miles on the treadmill today. I prefer to run outside but the treadmill is better than the couch!

Water, running and cross training in the very early morning, and the dreadmill.
DS has been at practice at 6am so I stay up and workout early in the morning while I wait for him.

Oh Liz!! I'm so sorry your DH got sick! I'm glad he's ok!! I hope you have an uneventful vacation at WDW.

I think those crazy dreams before a race are pretty common. I know I have had them. This year before Princess I was awake for good at 1:30am.:scared1: This was after our neighbor's screaming munchkins kept us up way too late.

I hope you have lots of fun at the Color Run!

I added your birthday and kind of redid the first two posts.:goodvibes Pouring water over your head is a good idea. I don't know why the heat is bothering me so much this year, cause I know I took lots of runs in hot temps last year and the year before. I think I have just been very tired which has not been helping. Hopefully summer will visit you soon.:goodvibes

Liz--I am so sorry! I am glad DH is doing better. How scary that must have been for you all. I hope you have a fabulous time at AKL. I think a little stress eating is a-ok in this case.:goodvibes

I feel your pain. It was 102 here yesterday and I think they are thinking 103+ today. Not that it matters after a 100. haha! I hope you got your treadmill run in. As long as I get my butt out of bed, I do ok. But after about 8:30, it is too hot and the sun is brutal.

Great job getting in those early workouts Buffy!

I have off on Fridays, so I went to zumba today. I am still tripping over my own feet, and I often can't do the arms and legs at the same time, but I always leave there smiling. I just love the instructor. She is so---lovely. Just kind and welcoming and so very fit.:goodvibes

Here's my schedule--tomorrow 4 miles, Sunday off, Monday yoga, Tuesday off, Wednesday race!

--Dottie--good luck on your race. I think it is this weekend too!

ttyl.:)

Rose,

thanks for the good wishes, my race is next Wednesday on July 4th. The Freedom Run 4 miler. As for heat- being in Fl it is a big concern. This race may be pretty brutal but we run through Historic down town which is well shaded and every year a local neighbor stands on his lawn and sprays a gentle mist at the runners if they want it:thumbsup2. I havent been getting in my weekly runs as regular as i'd like due to the heat- have hit the treadmill for a couple of them.

I love Zumba! I know what you mean with the arms and legs. I went yesterday and there were a few parts where I was pretty much just bobbing up and down or shuffling my feet back and forth!

We had a break in the heat so I went outside and ran about 30 minutes then walked about 35. We had a bit of cloud cover that dropped the temps about 10 degrees so that was much appreciated.

Thanks so much for the tips and kind words, Buffy, Lisa and Rose! :goodvibes

My leg IS getting better, yahoo! The it band is still tight, and my glute from the fall, but the hamstring area is much looser and held up well to the bike, some elliptical, and walking. I had a PT appointment, a water rehab class and a massage session this week and things are looking up! :cool1:

I had hoped to run a race on July 4th, but I'm going to set my sights on The Seafair Torchlight Run on July 28th. You can dress up like a pirate. pirate: I hope I don't get a cramp in me peg! :rotfl:

Go, Kayla, go! Have a great time at the COLOR RUN today! :cool2:

I hope I don't get a cramp in me peg! :rotfl:

:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2:pirate:

I'm glad you are feeling better!

I am using you people for my inspiration to get outside this morning and do my 10 mile run. :goodvibes
