Biggest Loser 8 Fall Challenge -- for losers and maintainers!

I hope I didn't blow it! I ate several small pieces of cheesy garlic bread! I did just go do the 3 mile WATP! And I am PMSing! Here's hoping I have a loss for the weigh in tomorrow! Nothing but water the rest of the night! UGH! I was good (I think) the rest of the day! I so wanted to see the 160s tomorrow!

Enough of my whining!
That's OK I just ate half a bag of pita chips with hummus....then I wanted a truffle... I didn't- had a piece of gum instead. Had wine too. I dunno, coming off a 9 day stretch at work, need to relax. :crazy2::hyper2:
OK it was baked pita chips and the bag was small, but still no excuse.

Really the only thing we do differently is drink Powerade/Gatorade. I know it has calories but it really does make you feel alot better. Are the any other rehydrating drinks that anyone can recommend?
Get extra sleep when feeling poorly too:love:

I'm with you Piglet18 on the dreaded flu shots. My nephew who is in Mass Immunization with the County says we should definitely be vaccinated.
I had a flu shot last year and came down with that terrible Noro? flu twice!!
I called it N.O.R.A.D Flu because I exploded in every direction! (oops-sorry-too much information for 6:30am:scared1:)

We use the Powerade ZERO as it has no calories and is just as tasty!

What are your favorite vitamins, herbs, methods of healing? There's lot's of different sicknesses and people deal with healing in many different ways
.

Vitamin C (doubled) when I start feeling like the onset of a cold/flu, I add zinc as well. I always fall back on water. Sometimes I'll heat water and instead of adding a tea bag (or anything) I just drink warm water. The biggest for me is rest!

I believe in the flu shot. But for me, I have only one kidney so I'm guaranteed to get the flu every year. When I get the flu it takes it toll. I've had the flu already this year before I could the shot. I'm still reeling. Just my 2 cents.

ONly down .4 this week. I was back up the 1.8 I had lost lat week on Wed though so I'm ok with any loss.

I am down .5 lbs this week. I'll take it considering for some reason the day before weigh in I decided to eat a little more than I should have. :confused3

Maybe having the dog chase me around the house for 10 mins last night helped. :lmao:

Good luck everyone.

Anyone up for a last chance workout before the weigh in?

Good luck everyone!

I got in an extra 85 minutes last night at the Y and I did my semi-usual 30 minutes this morning. I just couldn't pull myself out of bed any earlier this morning to do more!!

I am so happy to report that I am down 2.6 lb this week!! :cool1: :woohoo::yay: I haven't had a loss like that in FOREVER!! I have finally broken into the 130's and I plan on staying there!! My revised goal weight of 130 is finally looking doable!! But I really busted my butt this week with the exercise, etc to lose that 2.6, so I really feel like I EARNED it!

Well... I do take a rather holistic approach to most illnesses. I am certainly not the type to run to the doctor for every cold and sniffle. That said, I get an "annual" sinus infection most every winter and I do end up on antibiotics once a year for that. But I can usually get that called in without an appointment :cheer2: That makes me very happy. I have never had a flu show and don't plan on one this year. My kids have never had one either. I was almost talked into it for DD this year, but I am holding off still. DH gets one every year, but he has a chronic neurological disorder and it makes his immune system not always work properly (plus he doesn't eat right or exercise or get enough sleep!! :scared1:). He still manages to get some horrible chest congestion type illness most winters anyhow, but not usually the actual FLU.

I don't take a daily vitamin... mostly because I just don't remember. And I buy vitamins for the kids, but they don't remember unless I remind them. DD eats well, so I don't worry about her vitamin/mineral intake... but DS is another story!

When someone is sick we TRY to get extra rest.... but it is hard for DD to miss school now that she is in high school (and in the honors program to boot), so when she was sick a few weeks ago, she didn't miss a day for three weeks (while she coughed and sniffled, etc)... until she went to the doctor and got Dx with bronchitis, double ear infection, and conjunctivitis in both eyes and was told to stay home for a day or so.

I know.... I can hear you now... "how unfair of her to expose everyone else to her germs!!" etc... and I totally agree. But they REALLY frown on missing school in high school and it is VERY difficult to keep up with the studies and make up the work... especially with a FULL load of honors classes. Plus I just figured it was fall allergies and maybe just a cold.

DS, however, will generally stay home at the drop of a hat... with the smallest sniffle or headache he will ask to stay home.... so I have to kind of play it by ear with him. His head and throat hurt earlier this week, so I let him stay home that day. But he was fine by evening and has barely mentioned it again.

I am not one to push cold medicines or such on my family when they are sick. I figure the body can heal itself just fine (most of the time) with extra rest and fluids. But if you can't sleep due to congestion and/or coughing, then I don't mind giving a dose of decongestant or cough medicine. I do have a lemon/orange tea that I love to drink in the winter when I am not feeling well. I don't think that it has any real medicinal qualities, but it just makes me feel better.

DMom swears by honey and lemon and vinegar for a sore throat and/or cough. Mix a few tsp of each, put a spoonful in your mouth and let it trickle down and coat your throat. It really does help it feel better.... plus honey has been shown to have antibacterial qualities.

Well.... I am home today and I had planned on "raking out" DS's room.... but I just don't feel like it. I think I will sit at my scrapbook table (to reward myself for my great loss this week!)................P

I had a significant loss this week, making up last week's weird, flukey gain....it's an average of -.8 lbs over 2 weeks, which really is about my average, but I'm especially happy about it this week as I really splurged a bit over the weekend at the Race for the Taste. Sometimes it' good to shake things up, I guess.

I also got a new clippie at long last. This one took a while - 8 weeks!

As for the QOTD:

Methods of Healing: mostly we just wait it out, but for sinus and congestion, I've gotten in the the Neti Pot. It can help a lot, but it can be tricky to use, too. I have also had some luck with homeopathy, especially with sinus pressure/pain and fever. When my DH starts coughing, though, we've learned to send him to the doctor sooner rather than later - he just keeps coughing and coughing if we don't get prescription cough medicines for him, poor guy.

Funniest Movies:

I am also a fan of Mel Brooks - Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part 1. Also a fan of Monty Python, especially The Meaning of Life. :rotfl2: It's not at all appropriate, I'm afraid. The funniest thing I've seen lately, though, hands down was the RiffTrax live satellite broadcast of "Plan 9 from Outer Space." My face and belly hurt the next day, I laughed so hard. RiffTrax is the guys from Mystery Science Theater 3000 riffing on movies without the puppets and sci fi theme. Rifftrax.com They even make Star Trek 5 enjoyable, if you can believe it.

Corinna..TOTALLY OT, but I just have to ask..
Your avatar picture, is that the talking trash can? If so, I also have MANY pics of my kids adoring it..TOO FUNNY! We have spent HOURS trying to seek out that trash can on every trip...sounds hilarious to explain the photo to "non-Disney" folks when they ask.."why is your son hugging a trash can" :lmao:

Love MST3000, watched every Sunday. Funny!!

Lost another pound last week. Not sure how since I haven't exercised (except walk the dog) and the food quality intake hasn't been the greatest.

Gained this week. It was a really difficult one. Ate everything in sight and once I got back on the wagon found out my dh had racked up 11,400 in debt that I knew nothing about. :scared1: Can you say stress?

Sarah

Hope everyone had a good weigh in. I had a loss of 2.4 pounds. I thought I was on track to lose a small amount this week, but was happily surprised to see that result on the scale this morning. I've got to give some credit to the COW - I actually did exercise all 7 days and ate all my fruits and veggies 6 days.

Sarah - ACK! I'm sorry you are under so much financial stress right now - I might have killed my DH.

QUOTD: What are your favorite vitamins, herbs, methods of healing? There's lot's of different sicknesses and people deal with healing in many different ways.
I try to take a more natural method of healing, but I'm not averse to medicine either. I have bad allergies and chronic sinusitis, so when they act up, I take medicine for sure. When I'm not feeling well I drink lots of hot water or tea with a little honey. I need to start again with my regimen of daily nasal/sinus cleansing. Its like the Neti pot only you just use a bulb syringe to squirt saline up your nose. It really makes a difference for me. I try to remember my multi-vitamin but that's a challenge.
We would benefit from a humidifier, but we just can't keep up with the cleaning. I'm always worried I'm doing more harm than good if it's not clean. And the 2 we have were discontinued so we can't get the filters anymore.
I do like taking a hot shower for some steam and putting a hot washcloth on my face to ease sinus pain. I always get really sick around the holidays so I am recommitting myself to take care of me. :thumbsup2

Lost .8 this week. Worked my butt off but c'est la vie! A loss is better than a gain. One thing that messes me up each week is the weekends as I always gained back more than I lost the previous week though I don't over do it with eating. I don't exercise as much but still do some. I only allow myself one drink with alcohol a week and I usually have that on Friday or Saturday. This week is PMS time so that's probably why I didn't lose as much as I have been each week though I did end up with a loss.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Speaking of vitamins....

We try to take daily vitamins, but we're not always the best about remembering. We use the Walmart store brand of Airborne preventatively before we go on vacation or if other people in the house are sick. Since DH is the only one not sick now, he's taking lots of it! I find it helps shorten the cold or lessen the symptoms too if we take it when we're sick. The kids won't take it though, they think it's gross.

As for treatment, it just depends on what the ailment is. DD10 started running a fever Sun. night. I took her to the Dr. on Mon. Rapid strep and flu tests were both negative, so we were just using cough medicine because she was coughing so violently. Then the Dr. office called us Wed. night because her 48 hr. throat culture came back positive for strep, so she started her antibiotics and is just now starting to feel better this morning. DD12 and I had both been feeling really bad also, so we went to the Dr. yesterday and they didn't even bother with the testing, just went ahead and treated us for strep since it's in the house and we both had symptoms. I'm fine with taking antibiotics, I just have to be careful we take all our doses. It can get confusing with 3 of us on them at once, 1 is 3 times a day and the other 2 are twice a day. I made a little chart so we can keep track and make sure we don't miss any doses.

We always get our flu shots. DH and I have both had ours already, and the girls will get theirs in the next couple of weeks when they're no longer sick. We will be getting the H1N1 shot also. I work in OB and wouldn't ever take the chance of exposing a patient to something that I could prevent. DD12 has asthma and gets very sick when she has the flu. If H1N1 had emerged earlier, it would have been included in the seasonal flu shot and there wouldn't be any debate about whether or not to take the extra shot.

A big thank you to 50sjayne for being the coach this past week!

I will be your coach for the next week. I've never done this before, so bear with me!

Congratulations to all the losers and maintainers this week! For those who gained, just get right back on program and dedicate this week to turning things around!

I haven't weighed in yet, but since I've been sick and mostly eating for comfort instead of journaling, I don't expect it to be pretty!

QOTD Friday:
What type of weight loss program are you following, and how is that particular program helping you reach your goals?

I'm doing Weight Watchers. I started in May (for the 4th time). ;) I chose WW because I've had success losing weight on the program in the past. I did regain, but that was my fault for quitting the program. I know if I stay on it for life, I will continue to lose until I reach my goal and will be able to maintain after that. I like the personal support that comes with the meetings, and I like the flexibility to be able to eat whatever I want as long as I count the points for it and stay within my points allowance each day. When I've done programs that restrict certain foods, they're usually some of my favorite foods and I just can't stick with it.

That you to everyone who offered hugs and support over my friend's tragedy. The memorial service was last Saturday, and I spent the better part of the week completely off the wagon diet-wise. My friend has two more weeks of maternity leave left, so we've been getting together for lunches and so her DD can play with my youngest, so its been a lot of eating out and not always making the best choices.

I have been trying to walk, as much for quiet/meditation as for exercise, but it has been COLD here. Like 2+ weeks of below normal temps and lows below freezing cold. And I hate the cold, though I don't know that alone would stop me; its the need to take DD1 out with me or wait until after dark when DH is home that stops me some days.

I think DH finally got tired of hearing me complain about the cold, because he came home from work yesterday with the Wii and Wii Fit Plus, with the statement that the older kids will understand getting one of their Christmas gifts early. So now I have a new toy to keep me on track with my exercise goals! :cheer2:

QUOTD:
If you could spend a day with any celebrity--who would it be? Like say you won a contest for a charity or something like that?

Johnny Depp. He's hot and he's interesting... What more could a woman want?

Disney wants us to volunteer. QUOTD Saturday:
Have you volunteered in the past? If so what sort of volunteer work?

I really haven't hit my volunteering stride yet since we moved. Before the move, I was involved in a community garden in addition to my home gardens, and much of the produce was donated to the local food pantry. DH is a contractor so his charity of choice is Habitat for Humanity; we donate some of our time every summer. And of course there's the usual parent stuff - school, scouts, sports. etc. Since we moved, Habitat is the only thing I've kept up with. Oh, and I'm making doll clothes for the Goodfellows of Detroit's "No child without a Christmas" campaign; my mom and I have done that every year for as long as I can remember, and with her still working full time and coordinating the donations for her entire office now, the sewing has fallen mostly to me.

I don't work at the animal shelter any more, though I do still donate blankets and pet supplies when I'm up that way. I just couldn't take it any more, it was too sad and getting sadder. With the foreclosure rate in our area, we were seeing a lot of beloved family pets surrendered, and I just couldn't handle that without wanting to take them all in. And I've gotten away from the work I used to do with teen moms in my old community, though that was as much social as volunteering, kind of a playgroup arrangement for young women who tend to be reluctant to join conventional playgroups, Gymboree, baby's day out type things. One of the first young women I met, 10 years ago when the idea was brand new and I was a 20yo mom of a toddler myself, is organizing things now.

Sundays quotd:

What was the last thing you ate?

A cup of Dannon light & fit strawberry yogurt topped with granola.

QUOTD: What cd is in your car right now?

No CD player, so no CDs. Just my MP3 player hookup, with everything from Taylor Swift to Kid Rock to Nine Inch Nails, and in honor of Halloween, the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack.

Quotd Tuesday:
What is one of your most embarrasing moments relating to being overweight?

I really don't have any. I hate looking at pictures of myself, but that's about it.

QUOTD Wednesday:

What movie makes you laugh? I mean really laugh--rotfl.

Pretty much anything Mel Brooks, especially Blazing Saddles. The Producers. Money Python and the Holy Grail. Airplane.

Speaking of vitamins....

QUOTD:

What are your favorite vitamins, herbs, methods of healing? There's lot's of different sicknesses and people deal with healing in many different ways.

I pretty much just let nature take its course. We take multivitamins and there's nothing like hot tea for a cold/sore throat, but that's about it, and no one in my family gets sick often.

QOTD Friday:
What type of weight loss program are you following, and how is that particular program helping you reach your goals?

I'm not following anything structured, just moderation in eating and a concerted effort to exercise even when I don't feel like it. When I've tried diets before, I always end up feeling deprived and fall off the wagon in big ways when my frustration reaches the tipping point. This is working much better to get me started; I might need something more rigid when I'm closer to my goal to drop those last few lbs, but this is a relatively painless way to get started for me right now.

Corinna..TOTALLY OT, but I just have to ask..

Yes, that is Pipa, the talking recycling bin in Animal Kingdom! For a few years there, he was the hands-down favorite of my kids. One day we went to Animal Kingdom with the sole purpose of finding Pipa out at Rafiki's. Always a riot. The boy in the picture was 2 at the time - he is now 6 years old, but I still smile about how excited he was about that amazing recycling bin!

QOTD Friday:
What type of weight loss program are you following, and how is that particular program helping you reach your goals?

Another WW person checking in. I am not a fan of the meetings, actually. I do use the online tools to track my food and activity. I am also a fan of the Eat-Clean diet and incorporate a lot of the ideas into my life, though I do feel a need to track my food intake. Otherwise, I end up eating either too much or too little before long.

I am really enjoying the new WW online community - there are blogs and challenges and home pages. In my opinion, it is taking WW to a whole new level. Here's a link to my blog on there - there are so many different blogs, it is always easy to find something inspiring to read. You don't have to be a member to read, but you do to comment, I believe.

I consider BL to be an active part of my weight loss program as well. The weigh in is vital to me, and the QOTD keep my head in the game.

QOTD:

I'm not following any plan. I'm doing what worked for me earlier in the year when I lost 30 pounds. I exercise 2-3 times per day and have cut down on portions. I also eat more vegetables. I try and vary my workout as much as possible so I don't get bored with it. I do the Wii Fit and, PLUS, I do WATP, I walk with my mom when she's visiting. I started doing the 30 day shred again yesterday. I drink lots of water and only drink one soda a day. I drink no more than 2 alcoholic drinks a week, sometimes only 1. I eat Skinny Cow ice cream or low fat ice cream. I still have my sweets including a handful of M and M's a day or a 100 Calorie chocolate. I had been doing the ellipitical until hurting my knee so I have just upped my other workouts. Oh yes, I will also be doing the EA Sports Active starting next week I think. Working out has become a habit and I really love how I feel after I have worked out. I can tell when I haven't worked out as I don't feel up to simple tasks. When I start to feel bored and am afraid I am going to eat something I shouldn't I go downstairs and do the Wii or another workout. Having my clothes feel loose on me is a major plus and I use that to help keep me motivated.

Writing all this down and sharing it with others is also really inspiring me to stick with my goal for a healthy and happier me!

I hope everyone has a SUPER weekend!

HUGS to all!
