Ben Roethlesberger In Motorcycle Accident

Not only is he beloved by "sporting-event people" (funny, I thought there was more to me than to be lumped into the group "sporting-event people"), but I would say he has a family that loves him, friends, teammates, etc.
Why is this about you? I never mentioned you. I've never thought anything about you except that you are generally pretty nice in your posts, and sometimes funny.

But now you've decided to continue this, even though I already apologized for going OT. What do you want from me? Honestly, what can I do?

And I said "sporting-event" because I'm not sure if it is football or not.

Of course the guy has people who DO care about him. I'm just not one of them, that's all.

I'm willing to bet that Ben Roethlisberger would be more charitable toward some person screen-named "Cool-Beans" who he has never heard of and who has doubtless done a few dumb things in his/her lifetime, than you are being toward him and one dumb thing he did, and all those who might be a bit upset about this.
I've done a lot of dumb things (ask DH!) Mentioning that I don't care about Ben Whatshisname is one of them, I guess. Apparently not caring about this guy is very wrong to many people.

But I haven't been ANYTHING toward him. Not charitable. Not uncharitable. All I said was I didn't care about him. I assure that he doesn't care about me. (He doesn't know me. I'm OK with it..)

And nobody will ever hear me say that people deserve what they got because it is their fault. You misread something there. There are a LOT of nurses who'd say, "Well, he wasn't wearing his helmet...tough beans." Just like they blame smokers for their lung cancer and fat people for their diabetes and heart problems.

I firmly believe that everyone is entitled to attentive, caring docotrs/nurses (esp. with the nurses). It doesn't matter how they ended up where they are, they are still suffering and at their most vulnerable and should be able to count on us for kindness.

Do you care about my patients? They are very sick. Would you like to hear their stories? Get updates? Want to come visit them and sit by their beds? NO! You don't! Doesn't make you a bad person.

The fact that I do care about them doesn't make me a better person than you.

I resent the implication that if I don't happen to care about the same people you do that I am somehow not as good or as charitable as you are.

But I'm still sorry that I brought up the motorcycle thing. I shouldn't have done it.

Well here you go. This is coming from police sources:

Bike Crash Leaves Roethlisberger In Serious Condition

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is undergoing surgery after a motorcycle accident on Monday morning, doctors at Mercy Hospital said.

Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition, according to Dr. Larry Jones.

According to a police source, Roethlisberger suffered a broken jaw, broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost many teeth and has severe injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.

A plastic surgeon has been called in, the source said.

"On behalf of everyone within the Steelers organization, I want to express my concern for Ben Roethlisberger. I am sure Ben knows that we are praying for his complete recovery. So far, we have been encouraged by the early reports from the medical team at Mercy Hospital," Steelers president Art Rooney said.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said the accident happened on Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge.

A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over his handlebars, hit the windshield of a car and then fell to the ground.

The witness said she saw the accident and went over to help but did not recognize Roethlisberger. When she asked him what his name was, she said he replied, "Ben."

The woman added that Roethlisberger asked her a series of questions, including where he was and what state he was in. He attempted to stand up but the woman said she encouraged him not to move until paramedics arrived.

The bike and the car, a silver Chrysler New Yorker, have been towed to a police facility in Troy Hill for investigation.

The driver of the New Yorker is not believed to have been seriously injured.

Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet, according to the Tribune-Review. In the past, he has publicly said he prefers to ride helmetless, which is legal in Pennsylvania.

Former Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw has been an outspoken critic of Roethlisberger's motorcycle activity, saying Roethlisberger should stay off bikes until his playing career ends.

I take it, he's a football player?

Does PA allow you the option of helmet or no helmet?

Either way, I'm surprised that a football player, whom learns to fall without injury and wears a helmet for work, didn't think of wearing one for a drive on his bike?

I hope he has a full recovery.

Yes, in PA, helmet is optional I think over the age of 18? There is an ongoing debate about him wearing a helmet or not. It started when Ben posed on a Harley without a helmet. Since then, Terry Bradshaw has made comments about how Ben has amazing talent, but isn't too bright and doesn't wear a helmet, etc. Coach Cowher also "lectured" Ben about wearing a helmet. Now, I will bet you any money that it goes in the contracts that they MUST wear helmets on motorcycles. There is too much riding on Ben and to lose so much over one ignorant, stupid mistake is just dumb.

I know. I read that thread after you linked it. There were some fairly idiotic comments on there, most especially by some Bengal fan (I'm a Bengal fan but some of my fellow fans are among the worst sports fans on earth) who intimated that this was "payback" for Carson Palmer getting hit in the knee by Von Oelhoffen (these same Bengal fans seem to forget Von Oelhoffen is long-time former Bengal who played with them during their bleakest times). This would seem to be a time to forget about being NFL fans for a minute and support Big Ben.

Terry's the wise one, I tell ya. I agreed with him when he said it and I agree with him now. Let's hope Ben feels the same way if he gets through this ok and thinks about riding that bike again.

Here is a picture of the car that he hit. Take a look at the windshield. I have seen a few accidents and never saw a windshield like this. He went head first into this.

Wow! Sometimes it's best to just say nothing at all.

Oh, my heart is breaking :sad1:

I can't believe the lack of common sense in someone with so much talent! The Steeler Nation has been dreading this day since those pics first surfaced of him on a bike.

My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as well as every person who bleeds Black & Gold during this difficult time.

Well, I'm very sorry this happened to him. Sounds like he could eventually turn out to be okay, but boy does it all sound scary!

My take is, he apparently didn't cause the accident, but he's on a motorcycle and not wearing a helmet--when you make your living from your physical abilities, you shouldn't risk your livelihood by riding a motorcycle, period. Even if he were wearing the proper gear, he could still have a career-ending injury on a bike. Why take the chance? I don't get it.

As a Ravens FAN I'm very sorry to here this we have a great rivelery with the Steelers and he is a great QB.I hope all pulls through for him .

As a past motorcycle rider I understand the feeling of rideing without a helmet For the 15 straight years I rode on the street I went both ways depending on state and local laws that were required.

I have been cut off right as I hit the intersection ,I have been ran off the expressway, and ran up on curbs at downtown locations .

Yes some is the motorcyclist fault (speeding ,lane spliting) but most of the times it's because people JUST DON'T LOOK where they are going.

Of all the wrecks and yes there was many the only one that put me in the hospital was driving 5 mph behind the Mall just to move my bike .Someone hit me with a brick and cruched both my Eye orbits and nose.

I'm 2nd generation of a steel worker forced to move for employment...part of the Steeler Nation living in GA, and my heart goes out to all of you in Pittsburgh and prayers to Ben and family!

I can't imagine how much hope it gives that city and the surrounding area to have a team with such a great bunch of guys full of spirit and integrity. I hope and pray that somehow he recovers and can play this season.

Hugs!

I've said it to my husband a few times, part of me wishes that I'd gotten my motorcycle license when I was younger - but the thing that scares me most is not that I wouldn't be able to handle it, but the other drivers on the road. Even in my car, I see way too many people make stupid mistakes causing accidents and/or near accidents. I fear that while I've been able to manuever around everything that's come at me while driving my car, I may not have been able to do so on a bike.

So disturbing...was out @ Smokey Bones celebrating DS's graduation from police academy. His friend called just as we were settling in & we got the news.

We asked the waitress to change the tv over to the local news & there it was. People were crying they were so upset, couple commented to us that they wish we hadn't said anything.

Feel so bad for him but, angry too; such poor judgement. Yes, I know, personal freedom, not his fault, blah - blah. Just because they repealed the helmet law doesn't mean you have to follow suit & throw awaya common sense.

IMO, if the head injury doesn't ruin his life - period. The knee issues will probably end his career. Such a waste of talent, I pity him.

You're a nurse with this attitude. :sad2: OH my!

I've been a nurse for 17 years and never had I said oh well he deserves brain damage because he wasn't wearing a helmet or they deserve to gasp for air because they smoked their whole lives. Sorry but as a health professional especially,, that is a majorly wrong attitude. "You don't know him so who gives a crap how he turns out." :sad2:

I know you apologized but I still sit here shaking my head at some of your comments.

We love you Ben! Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

I have never heard of this guy until I started reading the thread. Hopefully he will be okay!

This doesn't sound good if there talking severe blood loss and severe damage to the knees.

No, it doesn't and I feel extremely bad for him.

He lost all his teeth, broke his jaw bone among the other injuries to his knees and head............what an awful accident.

The article I just read on AOL sports said that it is not known whether or not he was wearing a helmet.
