Ben Roethlesberger In Motorcycle Accident

ESPN said broken jaw, 9 inch gash to the back of his head .. broken nose, lost many teeth, and severe injuries to his knees ..
Serious but stable condition, and still in surgery.

Almost every other news outlet is saying he was not wearing a helmet. Every witness report I've read said he wasn't either. The police have also confirmed he wasn't wearing one. They were also to say that riding w.out a helmet is legal.

Earlier today SI had a legnthy interview posted where Ben discussed riding motorcycles w.out a helmet. That article seems to have been pulled. In light of today's accident, Roethlsberger didn't come across too well in the interview.

My comment wasn't harsh. I'm not wishing the guy ill will or anything. I just don't care about the guy. Nothing to me if he lives or dies. Never heard of him before, never met or saw him, don't know him. Why would I suddenly have a personal interest in his outcome?

I care about my family and friends. My friends' families, even. I care about my patients (almost always). But, NO, I don't care about every single person who is injured in the world every day.

If I say that I really care about this man and that it will have some effect on me personally if he lives (or dies), does that make me a better person?! Puhleeze.

How much of your spare time do you donate to helping the injured that you care so very much about? Or is this caring of yours the theoretical kind that doesn't help anyone, but makes you feel oh-so-good about yourself?

You get to feel that you can sit in judgement of others and determine for yourself whether they are caring enough, and publicly announce that they should be more caring, and more like you. Ug.

Even if you were the most caring person in the world, it doesn't give you the right to sit in judgement of others. Of course, if you were the most caring person in the world, you wouldn't do that, would you?

You know what? Many here do care about the outcome for Ben. If you feel the way you do, perhaps you shouldn't be on this thread to begin with.

As for Ben's condition, I have been following the news too and I pray that he'll be okay. Why the heck didn't he listen to Cowher? I agree that he probably feels invincible. This is just devastating news. My husband asked me to call him with updates, but I just can't make the call.

In light of todays accident, it is an interesting read
It is interesting. He said he doesn't ride sport bikes and doesn't ride alone. Apparently that wasn't true today.

Sure, he could have been in a car and had someone make a left into his vehicle, but in a car you have airbags and crumple zones and a seatbelt to protect you. The whole thing is just really sad. :(

The thing that gets to me is the fact that I was once, one of those people who never wore a helmet when I used to ride. 10 years ago this August, I loaded up my Harley and went to Sturgis for the Black Hills motorcycle rally. I went from Chicago to SD and back with out a helmet and never even crossed my mind. Later that year I became a dad to be, got married, sold the bike, and moved on. I haven't been on one since and I can't believe that I rode that far without one. I guess youth allows you to do dumb things that you regret later in life. It was really dumb, now that I think about it. Wow!

I didn't like wearing them and it cut down on the open air feeling of the ride. After seeing that picture of the winshield that Ben had hit with his head, it made me sick to my stomach. I hope he gets through this ok and changes his lifestyle a little. He has so much going for him and as I said before, he seems to be a great guy.

I'm one of those that just doesn't like motorcyles....probably due to an accident that left a dear friend paralyzed for life, and a dopey uncle who was a juvenile delinquent on his and made life miserable for his family. But, that doesn't mean others can't or shouldn't ride them if they chose to.
However....one would think that when these professional atheletes have signed these multi-million dollar contracts, they would be asked to forsake these other 'activities'...motorcyles, skydiving, bungee jumping...that sort of thing. On the evening news tonight, one of the NE Patriots was interviewed about just that and he said that once he started playing pro-ball, he sold his bike.
I feel awful for poor Ben R...he took a chance and it may have been a life changing event. I hope that's not the case. I don't want to see anyone suffer the same fate my friend did...god forbid.

I wonder what would happen if your insurance claim payments were impacted on whether or not you were wearing your seatbelt or a helmet at the time of your accident. No, you shouldn't be 'forced' to wear a helmet or a seatbelt, but with medical costs the way they are, maybe people would think twice if they were going to have to pay a lot of the incurred costs if they are in an accident without those 'protective' devices in place.

No one is asking you to care about him, but a little compassion, maybe even a "what a shame" would be nice. Well, at least you apologized which is probably about as close as we'll get to compassion from you.

Just curious, if a DISer would have posted that someone in their family had an accident and was in serious condition with a head injury, would you have posted the same type of remarks? Or would it have been the obligatory "you'll be in my prayers" comment that now we know you wouldn't really mean.

How nice that you "almost always" care about your patients. Sounds to me like you have job burnout and are in serious need of a little time off to get back in touch with whatever you've obviously lost somewhere along the way.

None of us here are stating we are better people because we care about someone we know (or know of) that got hurt. It's human nature to want the best for others and it has nothing to do with making yourself feel better because you happen to feel bad for someone else's misfortune.

What WOULD make me feel better right now is hearing that Ben's condition isn't so bad and he'll be at training camp and he'll start the first game and he'll be as good as new. Even if he never plays again, we can't wait for him to feel better.

OMG - when DH first told me about this earlier it sounded less serious than it does now. We're all Big Ben fans and hope he pulls through this - I hadn't even thought about these injuries being career ending let alone life threatening. How scary.

Seven hours of surgery for face fractures.

They're reporting nothing else is majorly wrong.

They showed the woman that hit Ben on the news. She also has a house in Maine. I surely am glad I'm not her right now. I'm not one of them but I'm sure there are plenty out there in Steeler Nation who wish her harm.

Some people are holding a vigil outside of Mercy Hospital.

Here's hoping for a full recovery. Luv ya Ben!

My thoughts exactly, RPOF

I am sooooo glad it wasn't me or anyone I know who hit Ben. from wht I have been hearing, I think the lady pulled out in front of him (I could be totally wrong on that, though). If so, sucks to be her.

I don't even know who this is and I care. I hate to hear about anyone suffering like he must be doing. :(

Sorry to hear about this! I'm a big Ben fan (no pun intended! :lmao: ) But, I mean come on, he was so stupid for not listening to the coach and not wearing the helmet. I hope everything turns out well! :grouphug:

From all reports that I've read/heard, it does appear that the woman was in the wrong. Of course, there is the possibility that people want to protect Ben. If they're true reports though, it really makes me feel so bad for that poor woman. I wouldn't want to be in her shoes either.

Here's praying that Ben has a full recovery and that this woman is able to handle all that's tossed her way.

I don't think anyone disputes this. But when you're young and dumb and full of it, you do lots of stupid things.

::yes:: I bet he's alot more careful from now on - regardless of WHO he is, DH and I were saying last night can you imagine being in your 20's and not having your own teeth? Plus surely with the damage to his face, he's bound to look somewhat different. Sure there are worse things but we're just saying.....

I do feel for the woman that hit him, but from where on her car the impact was it does sound as if she was at fault. Remember how upset the baseball fans were at the guy who caught a ball a couple years ago..can't remember the team for the life of me right now. They nearly burned him out of his home!

I think it was the Cubs? They probably would have won the game and the series and had gone on to the WS, but they lost the next 2 or 3 games or something. :confused3
