Ben Roethlesberger In Motorcycle Accident

As sad as it is, a child is reported missing and/or abducted every 40 seconds in this country or over 2000 per day under the age of 18. Some are taken by parents in custodial battles, some are taken by other family members, and some are taken by total strangers.

All of them deserve the nations attention, but unfortunately, most names are never heard by anyone outside the family. :(

I can't blame reporters for covering Ben's condition they way they are. It's much more of a rarity and fans LOVE him and want updates on his condition.
I would agree if it was the national news that put the missing PA child story second.

But, our local news should have run the missing child segment first because it carries more immediate need to be known, locally. It's the news, not a tabloid. It's about responsible journalism, IMO. It doesn't matter how many kids get abducted, this one is missing right now and local people can often make a life/death difference in these cases. Time is of the essence in abduction/missing children cases.

Btw, I love Ben too, but sheesh...

Which, IMO, is quickly heading to become an oxymoron.

Not only was the missing girl story after Ben, but the President of the United States flew in to Bhagdad yesterday and that was AFTER Ben!!!! I don't care how you feel about the president, but I think that with no real news on Ben (or even with real news on Ben) that story should have been first!!! I love the Steelers more than anything, but the Pgh media is quite ridiculous.

Oh, I don't disagree with you. I surely hope your news stations are covering it, just as I'd expect mine to if/when a local child goes missing.

I don't see why it's got to be an either/or situation though?

I just skimmed most of this, so I'm not sure if this is a repeat of what was said earlier, but this is the latest according to the news. He has a mild concussion, broken facial bones including jaw (but we've known that for a while), and no severe injuries to his knees. They did not have to wire his jaw shut. They used a titanium plate and screws to heal it. He could be going home as early as tomorrow, according to the news, but I seriously doubt that. They did the second and final CT scan today and found that he had no brain damage.

Yesterday, I went to Cedar Point on a band trip. My friend talked about him the WHOLE day. In the middle of lunch, she would say "I wonder how Ben is". When we got on rides, if there was numbers on them, she would try and get the number 7 ("to support Ben") and if there were no numbers, she would find a yellow one "because thats the steelers color and I should support Ben". Coming home, she saw a guy riding a motorcycle without a helmet. She went on a rant saying "thats just dumb. Why would you ride a motorcycle without a helmet at night? Thats stupid" I told her countless times "relax, hes fine." She kept texting her parents to get the latest news on him. LOL.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I have no problem with covering his accident and injuries. But to place his story (especially after knowing he is not suffering life threatening injuries) BEFORE a newly missing local AMBER alert, is ridiculous sensationalism.

ITA ::yes:: and sadly the problem isn't exclusive to Pittsburgh :sad2:

I love the Steelers, we've had season tickets for years but..... a little girl 12 years old went missing south of Pittsburgh yesterday in Greene County. Amber alert, hellicopters the whole deal. That is the SECOND story behind Ben. Sorry but I feel that is plain wrong. A little girl missing should be priority over anything especially since we now know Ben is in "fair" condition.
:teeth:

omg, I couldn't agree more. This little girl's life is at stake. :sad2:
A friend and I were discussing this very thing yesterday. It SHOULD take priority but sadly it isn't.

Hey, Sandy.

I'm so glad that Ben is on the way to recovery. Any word about the missing child?

Ben has just been released from the hospital.

Wasn't that sly how they released him in the middle of the night out a side door!
well, it was around midnight last night but probably a good idea to do that.

Yep, they let him leave out a side door on the Blvd. of Allies to avoid the press. He'll have to face them sometime, he's in the public eye, all part & parcel.

They're indicating that he's starting PT & will resume light workouts in a few weeks, wow - he really must be in superman-like condition to be expected to make such a speedy recovery.

Speculation that he'll start upcoming season! Not sure if they're blowing smoke or not, seems miraculous to me to expect it.

BTW, after watching a lot of news over the last few days I finally saw a report on the missing child. Never did see an Amber alert, usually catch them.

Yep, Ben is out. Was anybody outside the hospital when he was released?

I haven't watched the news today yet. Did they find the girl?

Ben released a statement. I copied and pasted from www.wpxi.com The bolding is mine.

"In the past few days, I have gained a new perspective on life. By the grace of God, I am fortunate to be alive, surrounded by loved ones and lifted by the prayers and support of so many. I am sorry for any anxiety and concern my actions have caused others, specifically my family, the Steelers organization, my teammates and our fans.

I recognize that I have a responsibility to safeguard my health in the off-season so I can continue to lead our team effectively. I never meant any harm to others nor to break any laws. I was confident in my ability to ride a motorcycle and simply believed such an accident would not happen to me. If I ever ride again, it certainly will be with a helmet.

My deepest appreciation goes out to the Steelers organization and my teammates for the compassion they have shown me. The physicians and support staff at Mercy Hospital were simply amazing, and I will forever be grateful for their caring treatment. I want to assure everyone I am committed to a complete and timely recovery. I look forward to being at training camp in Latrobe and to winning football games this season."

I hope he means it.

Edited to add, they have called the FBI about the missing girl.

No, not yet. I have the local news on now. She was on a mini quad when she left her home, they are still hoping to find her alive.

very sad news, the missing girl was found dead, buried on a neighbors farm, they made an arrest. she should never had been alone on her quad, the kids in my neighborhood all ride quads, but they never go into the woods alone..

bens news is nothing short of miraculous.the doctors say because of his size and the shape he is in is the reason he isnt dead. he is getting fined for not having that permit and for riding without the helmut. :moped:

I was just sick to learn of this yesterday morning. My heart is breaking for these parents.
