Ben Roethlesberger In Motorcycle Accident

From all reports that I've read/heard, it does appear that the woman was in the wrong. Of course, there is the possibility that people want to protect Ben. If they're true reports though, it really makes me feel so bad for that poor woman. I wouldn't want to be in her shoes either.

Here's praying that Ben has a full recovery and that this woman is able to handle all that's tossed her way.

On good morning America they talked with an eye witness and she said he ran right into her. :confused3

Regardless of fault I sure hope he recovers and states take another look at helmet laws.

I am one of those people that believes good comes out of everything so maybe he'll go on to become an activist about safe motorcycle driving and the importance of helmets.

I wasn't there, so I can't say what's factual and what isn't, but all the accounts that I'd read stated that Ben had the green light and the woman had to have the red light. Sure, Ben probably ran into her vehicle, but if she was on a red light, she's still at fault.

No charges were filed though so..... :confused3

From what a connected source has told me, the woman driving the car was the one in the wrong. There are some politics/media control issues at play keeping things quiet for now.

They showed an animated version of the accident this morning on the news.
The woman driver no longer had the green arrow to go left, (the people driving ahead of her made their left as it was turning yellow, they stated) so she either had a red light or a solid green, in which case she had to yield to oncoming traffic. She made the left and Ben (who had the right of way) could not stop in time and hit her. She was clearly in the wrong.

Just a few comments this a.m.

Have driven thru this intersection many times (outside of Armstrong tunnel - links to southside where mini-camp is being held, plus you have all the DT & Duquense Univ. traffic) not a traditional 4-way; very confusing to navigate.

The driver was a 62 year old woman w/homes in maine & pittsburgh, who hasn't been charged by police.

Lots of wild rumours circulating in the local media.

Head injuries aren't always a "cut & dried" scenario, might be a long wait & see. Regardless; best wishes for Ben & his family.

My baby brother just died in a motorcycle accident a week ago today.. He was wearing a helmet.. Originally they thought he had a heart attack - now they're not so sure because they found massive chest trauma during the autopsy (we only have a partial report right now)..

Bottom line is helmet or no helmet, you really have no protection on a motorcycle.. He bought the motorcycle to save money on gas - and it cost him his life.. It doesn't get any sadder than that..

C. Ann I'm very sorry about your bother. :grouphug: You are right, helmets can't protect everything.

I think in this particular case, it's speculation that it could have made a difference because of the facial damage.

C.Ann, I was wondering how all this was making you feel today. Hope you and your family are getting through it all okay. I feel the same way you do about motorcycles. My ds has talked about getting one for getting to and from work in Tampa and I say a prayer every day that he changes his mind!!

I read about this on another board - don't know how true it is these days (and because I've never even been to Pittsburgh) but since she was an older driver could she have been expecting to be given the right of way?

Pittsburgh Left
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Pittsburgh Left Turn" (typically referred to simply as the "Pittsburgh Left") is a colloquial term for a rule of the road that is obeyed almost exclusively in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area. It refers to the counter-intuitive practice of giving left-turning vehicles precedence over vehicles going straight through intersections, which improves traffic flow.

The "Pittsburgh Left Turn" applies when opposing lanes of traffic are both stopped at a red traffic light. If you are waiting to proceed straight through the intersection, while the car stopped at the light in the opposite direction from you has its left turn signal on, the driver of the opposing car expects you to allow them to make the left turn before you proceed straight.

This tradition began because most streets in Pittsburgh are narrow and often filled with parked cars, allowing for only one lane of traffic in each direction. Therefore, someone waiting to turn left at a light is going to hold up their entire lane of traffic, unless someone lets them make their turn.

The tradition is not only tolerated in the Pittsburgh area but is actually expected by longer-term residents, despite the authorities' attempts to discourage it. Few other areas of the country have this tradition.

7 hours of facial surgery does not sound good at all. I really think they are trying to downplay his injuries for the sake of fans. They don't want to get anyone in an uproar, especially against this woman.

I hope he can play this season. His stock is really high right now and it's going to hurt a lot of people (in addition to himself) if he has to sit out any of the season.

Actually, I think this practice originated more as a courtesy...let the person trying to cut over a chance to turn (sort of akin to holding a door open for the person behind you). Key component is the opposing driver waving you on...pointing & shooting is condsidered bad form & dangerous.

Not sure how "old" you are but, I've never heard of any area giving the right of way to elderly drivers. BTW, I don't consider 62 "old" either. Based on insurance statistics, elderly (not ancient) drivers have less accidents than the young do.

Sorry, but there really is no such thing as a Pittsburgh Left. Lived here all my life and I have never heard of it.

The rule of driving is the same here as anywhere; if you have the right of way then you proceed. You don't assume that anyone is going to let you turn in front of them unless they wave you on or flick their lights.

He's the Quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers - current Super Bowl champs. He's an amazing athlete and very young.

In this case (as I have been told), the woman driving the car proceeded after she no longer had the right of way. Ben was doing nothing wrong (not speeding and clearly following his signal.)

Boy, I hate to be her insurance adjuster on this one!!!

You know - it's really ironic.. I left my DD's around 6:15 pm to come back up here to the lake (yesterday was the funeral) and just as I started off, a big guy on a motorcycle pulled right in front of me.. Not in a dangerous or idiotic way - just very smoothly pulled out in front of me.. I followed that same motorcycle - with never a car between us or a car in front of him - ALL the way here to the lake.. When I turned on to my road, he kept right on going..

My brother was a big guy.. Kind of felt like it was "him" taking me back "home" - where he knew I always felt safe, calm and peaceful..

Personally, I've never like motorcycles - but to me the saddest part is that he went back to riding one to save money on gas.. That just boggles my mind..

Family is doing as well as can be expected and my Mom held up amazingly well.. Thanks for asking..

Whoever this guy is, I hope the end result of his injuries isn't worse than if he'd passed on..

Back to Ben...

I heard this morning that the injuries were extensive, but mostly limited to his face. Here's hoping he can make a full recovery and be the same football player he was before.

Oh.. That's a shame.. I hope he'll be okay and suffer no permanent injuries.. They really can do amazing things with facial surgery these days..

the Steeler's people are now in place directing the info released to the media. Think it's good that they're shielding both his family & hospital personnel.

BTW, both his knees were originally reported as being really messed up. After he hit the windshield he rolled across the hood of the car & hit pavement w/great force. A QB needs to be able to roll out of the pocket & scramble. Do think the issue of him playing football is secondary @ this point. Most of the fans are more worried about him having permanent head injury.:wizard:

Well unless the people giving the updates were lying for some reason it seemed they reports on the knees was false. I hope so. They were quite positive this morning vs. yesterday. I took that as things going well and his future looking good, both personal and professional. :)
