Ben Roethlesberger In Motorcycle Accident

I don't know who this guy is, don't care about his outcome.

But here's a good time to plug not riding motorcycles!

I don't believe the government should make them illegal or fine people for not wearing helmets. I always believe that people should be free to do as they please, even if it is stupid.

But if we could all point out to our kids how flippin dangerous these things are (helmet or no!) maybe less of them will ride them as adults.

Jumping down off my high horse now. Sorry. :)

wow, i'm all for freedom of speech and everything, but to say you don't CARE about someone's outcome who just had a serious accident? If i heard your child just had a serious head injury, even though i've never met them, their name is not familiar to me, i would still care about their outcome and hope for the best, but that is just ME. Watch you don't fall off that high horse some days and land on YOUR head.

When you're 24, a Superbowl champion, and the greatest thing since Terry Bradshaw to happen to the Steeler nation - I'm sure he was thinking he was invincible. I surely hope this changes his strong stance against wearing a helmet. It doesn't make any sense. Too many people I know have died on motorcycles while wearing helmets. I can't imagine going with out.

Prayers to him and his family. Currently he's in stable but serious condition and undergoing some surgeries.

Well said Donna - that comment was definitely harsh!

I sure hope he is OK!

I hate that FL passed the no helmet law. IMHO these people's "choice" to not wear a helmet raises my insurance rates. You know if an accident happens it's going to be worse without one. I'm soooo glad DH doesn't have a bike anymore (and FWIW he wore one :) )

That's exactly it, the invincibility just takes over. I have a son a few years younger than Ben, and i see that in him too. He mountain bikes along steep cliffs, snowboards down steep hills and now is talking about skydiving. They just have no idea things CAN happen to them. Sometimes i'd rather not know what is going on. I'm sure Ben's mom wasn't happy about him not wearing a helmet, but as mothers, we love our kids and hope and pray for the best for them. There's not a whole lot we can do once they're adults. :sad2:

I've had the accident coverage on since it happened and I am waiting to hear all updates. I hope he's going to be allright and I hope every person out there riding a motorcycle without a helmet is hearing this and paying attention. Just Maybe with all this media coverage on the subject, some of these people will wake up!!!

ITA.

We're from TN but DH has been a Steelers fan all of his life. I just called to tell him the news as he doesn't have access to a TV at the barn. I surely hope he pulls through this and agree w/ the invinsible factor that someone mentioned.

If he was up and alert after the accident, I'm sure he'll be fine.

so was Princess Diana after her accident.

While I'm pretty confident that he'll live, I don't think returning to football is guarenteed.

I'm hoping he is ok and returned to football good as new next season.

It was a dumb decision on his part. He is more than just Ben now and his decisions effect others. Agents, managers, the team, his teamates, the city all have stakes in him. That's the price of being a million dollar athlete.

Ok, I have the inside INSIDE track. My lifelong friend is operating on him. It's nothing spinal as early test have shown. The major concern right now is his jaw which is totally broken. She didn't know much more and they had to go into surgery, but at least it's not spinal.

My comment wasn't harsh. I'm not wishing the guy ill will or anything. I just don't care about the guy. Nothing to me if he lives or dies. Never heard of him before, never met or saw him, don't know him. Why would I suddenly have a personal interest in his outcome?

I care about my family and friends. My friends' families, even. I care about my patients (almost always). But, NO, I don't care about every single person who is injured in the world every day.

If I say that I really care about this man and that it will have some effect on me personally if he lives (or dies), does that make me a better person?! Puhleeze.

How much of your spare time do you donate to helping the injured that you care so very much about? Or is this caring of yours the theoretical kind that doesn't help anyone, but makes you feel oh-so-good about yourself?

You get to feel that you can sit in judgement of others and determine for yourself whether they are caring enough, and publicly announce that they should be more caring, and more like you. Ug.

Even if you were the most caring person in the world, it doesn't give you the right to sit in judgement of others. Of course, if you were the most caring person in the world, you wouldn't do that, would you?

Please save your no-motorcycle-riding agenda for other threads. We're talking about a human being here who is very well liked (even by this major Bengals fan posting right now), not a statistic to prove your point. I think people realize just how dangerous motorcycle riding is, even with a helmet.

I'm hoping he comes back at full strength this fall, and the Bengals-Steelers games continue to show the whole country why the AFC North is the most entertaining division in the NFL right now.

This is THE most disrespectful thing I have heard in a long time, be sure to wear YOUR helmet when jumping down from your high horse, because when someone would post on here and tell us of your condition, those of us who do NOT know you, would STILL send prayers and good thoughts your way. :sad2:

Thanks phisigprincess for the inside track, when you hear more please let us know!

Cool, inside info. It sounds like he'll be ok, then, not that anyone wants a broken jaw. That doesn't mean he'll be able to play next season.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize I'd upset people. (And it isn't an agenda, but that's not a big deal, I guess.)

I don't know AFC from ABC nor did I ever hear of this person before. Obviously he is beloved by sporting-event people (football, right?).

And, again, I'm sorry to be so OT and so upsetting.

Not only is he beloved by "sporting-event people" (funny, I thought there was more to me than to be lumped into the group "sporting-event people"), but I would say he has a family that loves him, friends, teammates, etc.

I'm willing to bet that Ben Roethlisberger would be more charitable toward some person screen-named "Cool-Beans" who he has never heard of and who has doubtless done a few dumb things in his/her lifetime, than you are being toward him and one dumb thing he did, and all those who might be a bit upset about this.

I got this off a ESPN thread:

Here's the update:

Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said.

A plastic surgeon has been summoned.

"He is right now in the (operating room) undergoing some surgery from injuries he received in this accident today," said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma and burns at Mercy Hospital, Uptown. ... He was talking to me before he left for the OR. He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened."

Also the next one suposedly came from someone who works in the ER at the hospital that they took him to:

http://forums.espn.go.com/espn/thread?forumID=492&threadID=3815049&lastPostID=24451918

From a reliable source: broken leg and jaw, face lacerations, punctured lung and they can't stop the bleeding on his brain....

Who knows if these are acurate or not, but this doesn't sound good at all.

Cool-beans: Not trying to be rude or anything, but may I ask where you are from?

As they stated on the news, Ben is not only a local celebrity, but a national, and even global celebrity. Anyone who has any access to a television or news paper or even a computer should know who he is. Even on the DIS, he was mentioned many times, during football season and after. His being in a motorcycle accident may not have a direct affect on you, but to say that you don't care what happens to him is just down right mean. Lets say, god forbid, something were to happen to you. While your injuries, or possibly even your death, does not have a direct effect on me, I would still be hoping that you and your family make it through. I would never say that I didn't care about the outcome because I know that you have friends and family that care about you and I would be concerned about them.

Thanks, Jason.

No, that does not sound good at all. Somehow I didn't think this was as serious as that. Prayers and pixie dust are certainly in order for him now.

Those injured knees will threaten his future career. Look how long Carson Palmer of the Bengals may be out because of a chop block (not intentional by Kimo Von Oelhoffen) to the knee in a playoff game in January. There's a possibility he may not be ready to play in September, and people are optimistic about his chances. Double knee injuries is awful for a career.

I just wasn't aware of all the other injuries like the brain bleeding, punctured lung, etc. Good luck, Big Ben. Bengal nation is pulling for a fierce competitor.

I take it, he's a football player?

Does PA allow you the option of helmet or no helmet?

Either way, I'm surprised that a football player, whom learns to fall without injury and wears a helmet for work, didn't think of wearing one for a drive on his bike?

I hope he has a full recovery.

grimley1968,

Don't take these reports as set in stone because who knows if they are reliable or not. I was just posting what they were saying on th Steelers ESPN board. Apparently the knee injuries suposedly occured when he hit the windshield and then hit the ground. However like I said we will have to wait for offical confirmation on this.
