Bed Bugs at Vero Beach

Just read a report on another thread about bed bugs at Vero Beach this week. I guess I've been a bit naive thinking it wouldn't be a problem at DVC properties but I suppose no resort is immune. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, as I pulled back the covers of the bed there were quite a few bugs. Now, I am ashamed to admit this, but I really didn't think they were BED BUGS. I have read threads on here about bed bugs, and people always make it sound like these bugs are really tiny like lice. I have read some descriptions of them being like the size of a pin head. So I didn't know. I thought maybe they were sand tics or something... just not bed bugs.

I caught the bugs and flushed them. I did NOT let the kids sleep in this bed. I even did this every day. If I saw the bugs I got them with tissue and flushed them. I then decided to save some in a baggie. I now feel really, really stupid.

So when we checked out, I took my baggie with the bugs to the front desk. Let me tell you... they tried to stay calm, but I could see it on their faces. They called some managers, and asked me to wait. A manager came out and shook my hand and sat me down and said she had to have a talk with me. At that point I just knew these bugs were bed bugs.

She said that these bugs were indeed bed bugs. We said that they hadn't seen them at Vero Beach in quite some time. She said that in her opinion they probably were brought in the room from the previous guest. She said that even though the room had been cleaned before we arrived, that the cleaning doesn't cover getting rid of bed bugs. She asked if the kids were okay, and I told her I hadn't let them sleep in that bed.

She talked to me for quite awhile, and then told me that she had to develop a plan of action."

First of all-EEEEWWWW!

Second, I have seen reports of bed bugs on these threads before. But like this person at Vero Beach I thought they were almost invisible. I remember someone saying something about small specs of blood sometimes being visible on the sheets. I also remember reading an article somewhere that said the comeback of bedbugs is a problem at many hotels including some of the finer hotels since many effective pesticides are no longer considered safe to use. The article also mentioned this is sometimes a problem with business class guest as they may travel from hotel to hotel unknowingly harboring the little stowaways.

Ok I am ridiculously itchy now!

OK - I've got to ask - why didn't you report this immediately?!? If I would have found bugs in my bed or in my kids' bed, I would have been on the phone and out of that room immediately.

The OP of this thread is not the poster that had the bugs. The OP quotes another poster from another thread.

OH! god I'm now pranoid after my a visit at ASMO this past April.

Me and my son went for a quick trip to Disney the past April, well long story short the first few nights were ok, but after that I had a red rash itchy oh! god and very uncomfortable. I had no clue they were bed bug bites, until I returned from my trip. I thought it was the suntan lotion and then I thought it was the soap. Any way I had gone to the doctor and he confirmed it was bed bug bites. The rash was on my arms, legs, stomach, and back.

the bed bugs can bite one night and the rash can show up the next day or so. It lasts about 1-2 weeks. I was always scratching

No I never complained. I should of but I didn't know while I was there that it was bug bites.

Now when I travel often to Disney I always check the beds. I'm just luckey it was me in that bed and not my son.

My apologies to the OP of this thread but to the OP of the original thread my question still stands! I can't understand why anyone woud tolerate bugs in their beds.

I agree! I would have demanded to be moved to a new room in a hearbeat!

It is very unlikely that any of us have stayed at a hotel open more than 5 years that has not had at least one bed bug issue. The important thing to take away from this story is the fact that Disney takes these reports very seriously. It is apparent from the response of the Hotel General Manager, that issues like this are dealt with immediately. I agree that if I found bugs in a bed that I would address it immediately.

I'm glad Disney looked like they take this VERY seriously.....but I would havbe been outta there:drive: :moped: :sail: ;)

Oh Wow! Making me shiver a bit here but just wondering... Would spraying everything down w/ Lysol kill them? I take Lysol w/ us everywhere- I am a business traveler too, (only 2-3 times a year) I have never run into bed bugs! But, I spray Lysol whenever we stay at a hotel, rent a car, even when I buy new sheets and pillows- I also buy concentrated Lysol and add a capful to bedding when I wash at home- (just always been a habit of mine, never have had a "bug" situation) I guess we are fortunate to this point-

You definitely would want to get out of there ASAP. They could climb into your suitcase and you could bring them home, infecting your home.

We have one poster from another thread who stays in a room with bugs in one of the beds. (I'm sure the bugs behaved and limited themselves to that one bed.;) )

And we have another poster who has a doctor confirm bed bug bites after a stay at a Disney hotel and doesn't notify Disney. I'm at a loss here! I know it's too late to be of any benefit to you but what about the poor unsuspecting guests that will be sleeping in that room after you? Sheesh, take five minutes and make a call or write that email!

I don't get it either ... if there were bugs anywhere in the room, I'd have called someone right away; and for them to be in the bed, I would have certainly asked to be moved. If they're in one bed, they're all over ... I don't want me or my family exposed to that. :confused3

u can demand all u want, if there are no rooms available, u r out of luck.

i was basically told "so sad, too bad" when we entered our studio @ BCV late after MNSSHP a couple years ago & found 'palmetto bugs' all over one wall:eek:

i was told they were @ 100% occupancy, no rooms @ any resort property & that the mgr was 'unavailable'...resulting in sitting upright in a chair all night w/flashlight while family blissfully slept:rolleyes:

had to make a fuss in lobby next day in order to get room fumigated:sad2: , never did see the mgr, although an assistant finally surfaced after several phone calls & pages went unreturned.

u can bet i contacted the executive offices after my return & was assured that the mgr was disciplined. btw, no compensation was offered nor did i request any, just wanted to let them know how the ship was being run:rolleyes1

fyi, i expect bugs in FL! i'd be willing to bet that palmetto bugs enter the rooms thru the balcony sliders being left open & not due to housekeeping issues. (Although, I do expect DVC to realize it & take the necessary routine erradication procedures)

my new routine upon returning home from any hotel is to open our suitcases, spray it thoroughly with bug spray & bag it in garage for a day...which was suggested by ex who owns an exterminating franchise. He has stated that bedbugs r typically brought into the hotels by guests:scared: .

What I come away from this report is that the VB CMs & Manager were great!! They handled their guest with honesty, concern and action.

I also came away with realizing I have to check our beds everywhere (and google bedbugs before we leave).

After seeing a story on GMA a couple of years ago about bed bugs, we no longer put any luggage on the beds (or fabric covered furniture) either at home or away. This includes carry ons, purses, etc. The news report said this is one of the best ways to avoid bringing home any unwelcome guests. It's making me itchy just thinking about it!

I wonder what the plan of action was. I would be interested in knowing how they "got rid" of the bugs, just in case I took any home...

tnmomof4 did say she would write up a trip report so I'll post the link when she does.
