Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Good morning Leaner Meaners!!

Hoping everyone's Tuesday is going well.

I guess I'm just going to have to accept the fact I'm continually in a WTO condition as I don't see it slacking off anytime soon.

Got in 7 on the TM on Sunday morning, and an upper body workout last night. A 3 miler is on tap for this evening and stadium run tomorrow.

I'll try and check in later.

Everyone - Keep up the great work! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

:)

Hi Vic! Keep at it! :thumbsup2 Good work fitting in fitness with real life commitments.

To all the Lean Mean Machines... Hello once again. Welcome to my workout! Tonight's effort....it was a twilight run (cool, getting dark, pleasant).

Miles: 4.01
Time: 33:27
Pace: 8:20

Splits:
8:14
8:24
8:17
8:23

Not too shabby (as they say). :cool1: Especially considering that the first and last miles have a considerable hill as a part of them.

Tomorrow I am running in a 5K event in Wilmington, DE. I think it begins around 6:45 or 7 PM. I'll post results afterwards.

Have a wonderful evening!

:grouphug:

Howard

Hey team leaners. Hope you're all doing well.

Did my usual 8 miles today. Took a nice easy pace through Waikiki to take in the sights. Some pretty things out there I must say. :lmao:

Have a good one everybody.

Morning Meaners! How excited is everyone today????

Connie: I hope your workout yesterday was more eventful than mine. That stretching study is going to be the death of me I swear.

Dave: I just read a study that shows that fit overweight people run the same risks of cardiovascular disease as unfit overweight people! See what a great thing you and Erica are doing for yourselves!! BTW, I just bought some calipers so I can do my own body fat. The study said that women in the normal BMI range (18.5 to 24.9) who had high body fat have a 54% higher chance of developing coronary disease than healthy-weight/body fat individuals. Time to get checked everyone!!

Vic: Nice to see you are still out there. We miss you here on the wagon!

Howard: I think we have the same training schedule albeit your runs go by MUCH faster than mine!! Great job with your speed.

Debra: Has anyone seen where we put Debra? I can't find her anywhere!!!

Everyone else: :wave2: I hope your day is as sweet as you are!

From the Great North Woods, leg cramps, yucky, ouchy leg cramps, and of course they were witnessed by my Texas family who had to stop and ask me why I was walking and did I need a ride... Mile 2.5 on a 4 mile run I started feeling it come on and it just got worse, left calf tightening...cramping....OMG I need to walk!!! :sad2: It was gone by mile 3 but it cost me precious time walking. No power walking, just painful walking. I had a 10:55 mpm average for the run. See, I entered into this 3 month stretching study with the USATF and it is over next Tuesday for me. I was in the nonstretching group and that means I cannot stretch pre-run. I can stretch any other time that I normally stretched (yoga class, morning stretch, etcetera) and I could not add in any extra stretching either. The pre-run stretch is the important one for me apparently. Restless leg syndrome runs in my family and it appears I am developing it too. Since the onset of this study, I lay on the sofa at night with DS6 and my feet just keep moving due to crampy achy pain in my calves. Yay for me!!

So, enough whining. Today is a rest day and I am resting. I am increasing my miles up to the 30 per week range prior to half training for the Applefest and the extra is wearing me out little by little. So today I rest. I am taking the kidlets to the local beach as we are having our first sun in 2 weeks (no I am not kidding) to lay around, play in the water and um, lay around all day!!

Have a great day meaners!!!

Just a quick :drive: for me.
I got in Pilates, crunches, and push ups yesterday, but the run never happened. Today is another day, so I'll get it in. The kidlets go back to school today which is always a sad day for me. I know some moms are thrilled when the kids go back, I'm just not one of them. So DS15 left for high school already and DS2 is watching Mickey Mouse clubhouse. In 30 min. DS8 and DS10 will wake up and start getting ready. I was up at 5:30 this morning and will be from now on. At least I can get Pilates in while my oldest is getting ready for school. Then it's taking them to school, taking their pics in front of the school sign (it's tradition), meeting my friends for coffee, coming home and running, :laundy: , and cleaning while waiting for a refrigerator to come (our beer, soda, milk fridge died this weekend), then picking up elementary kids, quickly followed by picking up the oldest from Cross Country practice. Followed by homework, dinner, baths, storytime, etc. Let the chaos begin! I may be MIA until I get this schedule worked out.
Have a great day all! Stay strong and stick with it.

Morning everyone!

Thanks for all the PD for DD! She is feeling better! I am a microbiologist and have a fairly high level understanding down to the molecular level how antibiotics work, but I am still amazed by how fast they work! Her eyes cleared up superfast!! She was a WILD child yesterday at home! (side note: I don't think I could WAH all the time, unless I could do it at night. I would definitely need a nanny during hours I needed to work) She goes to the urologist in a couple weeks for the reflux and is on prophylactic antibiotics until then.

W5D1 for me yesterday. Went well, about 1.8 miles during intervals...About .2 miles short of what I should be covering, but that is not too bad. I chose to track my intervals by time, not distance, but I added up the miles just to see where I was at. Total about 2.3 miles in 30 minutes. It is actually the same amount of running total as week 4, but you get one less walk break.

Someone asked about the full Water stop 11 the other day, it is as you are leaving the MK backstage area.

We may head over to WDW this weekend for a day if everyone stays healthy. probably do EPCOT and MGM. and maybe Sea World.

have a good day everyone!

Amy

Amy what a cool job:worship: I've never known a microbiologist.

Lisa that is very interesting and I tend to agree with you. There are some studies though that say you can be very fit and very overweight but there are problems with that theory. I think a person needs to strive for both a healthy body and an acceptable body fat %. I'm afraid that studies like that empower people to not put the effort into all the areas of a healthy lifestyle.

Vic, dude, tell them to chill and give you some me time. Do I need to talk to someone?

Everyone walk/run/rest/love strong.

Leaner Panda:hippie:

I am BACK!!!!! :cool1: Did'ya miss me????

My Boston trip was great.....weather was good. It rained a couple of times, but mostly at night, with clear and cool days! The double header at Fenway was enjoyed by all.......we had seats in the shade with a nice breeze. Both the 'Sox' teams won.....so ds #1 was really happy!

We actually drove down to Falmouth and took the ferry to the Vineyard for the day on Sunday. My dh and I used to go every summer with my family for a week on the Vineyard, but haven't since both boys were born. We spent our time on Oak Bluffs and the weather was beautiful. The boys had a great time. We did lunch and ice cream ((((((not wagon riding at that point, I must admit!)))))

There is way to much to catch up on.......so I will address individuals when I can read up on the activities of the bunch.

Beth

Beth of course we missed you. Welcome back. Did you by any chane see Debra on your travels? We seem to, as Lisa said, misplaced her.

Leaner Panda:hippie:

Wow.....so much to catch up on. I don't think I got it all, but here goes.....

Howard: My, my, my speedy hero! :cool1: :cool1: The only way I would see you run, is if I am not.......then I could catch you at the finish line! I am very impressed with the speed and weight loss.....you are my hero!

WWDave: Isn't it great to see the accomplishment of your lifestyle choices? We don't get to see it the same way you do.......what speed!!!!! Sorry to say, but you would have beat me by a mile! You walk way faster than I run, that's for sure! :cool1: :cool1: What I can't imagine is the person that came in 1st??? What was his time????? I can't fathom it at all..... but, WTG!!!!!!! :cool1: :cool1:

Jeff: What you get to see on your runs.......nature at it's finest! I can't imagine living in such a beautiful place......I am glad you still enjoy it!

Amy: Sending your dd PD! She has such a time of it lately.....I hope she improves rapidily! Makes my mother's heart hurt for her and you......mom worries are the worst.......you would take it all away from her if you could. Been there and have done that.

Lisa: You didn't get bite hard did you???? Did it break the skin????? Gosh, that's my big nightmare......I am so sorry it happened to you. Maybe I will start to carry my pepper spray again. First it was WWDave and now you. I hope you are OK.

Debra: So, I hear that you are missing again! Hope everything is ok, and it's just LTO again. Sending you hugs and kissess though!

Big Vic: 7 miles on the TM beast, huh? Good for you........I don't think I could have covered that distance on the beast.......what do you do to entertain yourself? Good job anyway, and good to hear from you.

Maria, Connie, Stacie, Tracy, and anyone else I forgot......:goodvibes Hope you are all well!

Wagon Tip of the Day: Blue Diamond whole natural almonds..... a great snack. They are high in fiber, low in carbs, and are a very filling snack! It has been said that 1.5 oz of almonds per day may reduce the risk of heart disease. I get the whole natural almonds, to miss all the sodium in the salted ones. I love them!

Beth

Just a quickie post to say "hi" to everyone! I will leave for our Panama Canal cruise early, early Saturday morning and have been very busy taking care of everything that needs to be done ahead of time.

Mike, Dave: congratulations on your events......those are great times!

Tracy: LOVE the "knocker' story! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Don't you just love what kids come out with! Congrats on the new fridge.......make sure you store lots of beer and wine coolers!

Welcome Julie! It's good to "see" you here as well!

Welcome back, Beth! What will you do without nancy for the next 3 weeks?

Jeff: love the video! It actually seemed much longer than on actual race day. I guess once you know you are on track to enter the MK, the miles go quickly.

Amy: pixie dust for your daughter. Your little pumpkin has been through alot lately.

Lisa: so sorry about the leg cramps. I get those all the time and they are killers. If you find out any good info on how to avoid them, please share it with us.

Everyone else: stay lean and mean......I'll talk to everyone again in a few weeks!

Team Ohana Captainless, without a rudder, how will we go on?! :scared1:

I guess we'll just have to be a bunch of self starters...

I hope you and Nancy have the time of your lives, and I want to hear the stories to prove it! ::yes::

Maria :cutie:

Good afternoon, Meaners!

I did my 6 miles this morning. The first half I had a PR for every mile, but things went wrong from there. I got to my turn around and my foot went all tingly like it had fallen asleep. I loosened my shoe lace hoping that would cure the problem and slowed way down so I wouldn't injure myself. It took nearly a mile for mly foot to wake up! By then, I had lost momentum and was being dusted by oil production hands as they sped by going too fast. In the last mile, the vicious dog came clear into the road charging me, so I had to pepper spray the son-of-a-gun. I hit him square and fair. Hope that does it for him.

On the bright side, I had a really great 3 miles and I saw a momma turkey and her 5 baby turkeys!!

Anyway, it was an experience.....one I hope I dont' have to repeat, any time soon!

Make a great day! -- Connie

We have a couple of turkey families on my street. A mama and her two babies are always in my backyard. Kind of weird for inside the Boston city limits, huh?

Sorry to hear about your foot falling asleep and the vicious dog. I hope you don't experience either of those things again.

Julie -- We usually have skunks, opposum, squirrels, cats, etc. -- but we have also had a beaver and an osprey! (The osprey decided to eat his snack on our retaining wall, unfortunately his snack was one of the above wandering through the yard -- yep, I took a quick look to make sure my own kitties were safe and sound ) DS was only 5 or so. I closed all the blinds and put on a Disney video :thumbsup2 Yes, in my back yard also in the Boston City limits! We laugh about it now, but it really wasn't funny at the time. DH came home and I told him there was a bird outside in the yard with a cat. He thought I had my words mixed up, and a cat had a bird. He walked into the backyard and said, "See, there's nothing out here". I pointed to the fence where the osprey was sitting, and said "See, it's a bird with a cat". He came running back into the house saying something I cannot repeat in good company. He watched it and checked on it periodically. The bird was out there for about 3 hours and it didn't leave any crumbs :rolleyes1 Thank goodness, because that really would have been :scared:

Of course, I live less than a mile from Belle Isle Marsh, so I think it's not quite as odd. No turkeys yet, though! I also haven't been attacked by any dogs, I think that would end my outdoor exercise career because I have a huge fear.
You guys are brave and bold! :woohoo:

Maria

Maria, I can't believe that osprey story! Thank goodness you were able to distract your little one from viewing the carnage. We've had skunks and opossums too. We even had a deer once. My DD kept saying that there was a deer in the yard. I wasn't really paying attention and told her it was probably just a big dog. I almost fell over when I looked and saw the deer, standing in the middle of our back yard next to the kids' slide! Ah...city living!

Okay, I'd posted a long response to everyone here, and apparently hit the close window before I'd submitted it. Arrrrgh! I'll try to replicate abbreviated answers to my posts. Trust me, the first responses were much more clever. :lmao:

So, long story short, I've been sick as a dog (which is why I don't own dogs, as it's not fair to malign their character). It started before my Saturday LR (7 hard miles), but really developed Sunday. I even ended up with a migraine, which I don't think I've had since Fargo. Anyway, it's affected my workouts/running. So, here are the very brief responses as I try to catch up.

Howard: I'm so glad you're recovered from your hip-flexor injury and that you're being smart with your stretching and XT. Good luck on your 5K tonight. I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but if you had to suffer this injury I'm glad it's at the beginning of your season, where you can address what you need to do to keep healthy over your season's many races. Being conscious about your hip flexor and conscientious about it is a good thing over the course of your training, I think. And a lesson for us all. I still see PRs in your future--and I am psychically gifted, you know!

Dave: You're the kind of romantic that no one wants to find a cure for! You live your life with big goals and dreams, from your relationship with Erica to your friends to your training & race goals. Speaking of races, a big woo hoo :woohoo: for your first race of the season, coming in 2nd (watch out Jerry!) and your PR. Great PRs are coming your way, not only because you train hard but because of your rest days and stretching. That, and your stabilized weight after losing all those pounds and inches. (Btw, congrats also to Erica, who is down 17 pounds and on her way to that Garmin.) You're a role model for us all.

Lisa: It's great to have you back here. A big hug for the body issues and a big boo  to bad photos (that was what it was). Regarding body issues, I feel you (not feeling your body, just the issues). So it was very cool to hear your rededication to your WOs and 6-pack, non-alcoholic abs. Plus, the choice of a belly piercing or tattoo seems very motivating (for you, not the needle-phobic me.) And, the technology-enhanced NB running gears, like the Bonita skirts, only adds to the motivation, right? The RW plan seems to be working out well for you--and I've clipped the plan for my future use. And you're getting so speedy! 8:34! Forget about the "painful walking" run, as it was an anomaly. What stretches do you do pre-run? I need to incorporate some. Oh, question about your Hospice 5K. Could you get a "Jane" (as in "Tarzan and...") skirt for your run across the swinging bridge? [Sorry to hear about the dog incident.]

Tracey: Big hugs to you and your family for the start of school. I knew it would be hard for you, especially with DS and HS. You're raising such cool kids--nice people in addition to being athletic. DS15 could be my personal trainer, as he sounds like he's got the knack. And DS2 is a card--I'd let him go shopping with me in a crowd any day of the week; we'd go looking for "knockers" together. I hope you and your family adjust to the school schedule with relatively few hassles.I'm very impressed with your variety of "miles is miles," Pilates, crunches and abs. I also think that stroller running is an excellent way to build strength and endurance; although I've never done it, I admire those who do. :thumbsup2 And it sounds like you're recommitting to "whatever it takes to get it done" in terms of lean-meaning decisions--yay for the exercise/food journaling, the WW points, and the keeping (running) on track! :woohoo:

AmyK: First, your DD. I'm sorry to hear she's going through a spate of minor illnesses. I think it would overwhelm me, if I were a parent. So it's good to hear she's already on the mend--wow, that's quick! Maybe it's the nutritional value of the cat food? And congratulations to you on your C25K progress. You're already on week 5 and doing well. I believe your plan to switch your LRs to Saturday or Sunday will work well for you--I do a Saturday LR, which allows me to use Sunday as a NYTimes reading day! I have to say that it's nice to read that you have found running to be a good outlet for stress. Running has so many unexpected benefits, besides general good health, that I'm still discovering. Sounds like you are, too. Thank you for volunteering at the full. (I'll look for you at #11, but might not "see" you or anyone, kwim?) P.S. Go red for ToT!!!

Aloha Jeff: I can always count on you to support my interest in various kinds of ice cream and assorted coolness. (If I can't have it in my personal style, I'll find it in another way...). Your memory and eye of for course details on your runs is pretty cool, too. Why do you I think the sights on your 8-mile Waikiki run can't be posted on a family forum like the DIS? ;)

Maria: You're having a fabulous streak of WOs--or should I call it a habit now? 11+ days and counting. And I saw your miles and minutes on the Ohana thread. Impressive! Good things are coming to you, beyond the news of increased definition. (Which is really great, too!) Double-dipping sounds as if it should be so naughty in terms of food, but your kind of double dipping is just right. If it makes you feel any better, I too experience life's impractical jokes--I gain on the bottom first, lose weight on the top first. The toddlers are not amused.

Mike: Your 2009 goals sound solid. #4--new job--sounds like it's been some time in the decision-making process. Good luck with that one. I'd love for you to have fewer  faces over your job. WTG with your 5K PR in your tri sprint. How many tris do you do in a season?

Connie: Snickers or dog food, Snickers or dog food? How is it even a choice, especially if the latter gives you fresh breath and a shiny coat. On second thought, I think I'll just try your cobbler recipe. Call me an unadventurous eater. I'm glad you and the grandkids had a fun, movie-watching weekend. *Sigh* It sounds heavenly to me. Perhaps not as beautiful as your Palo Duro Canyon Trail race. The view of the canyon sounds sublime. :cloud9: No wonder you're inspired to start your training. Good job on your 6 miler: the first 3 miles speak well for your pace and that you finished those last 3 (with scary dog) speaks well of your dedication. P.S. I didn't realize recumbent bikes are bad for your hips--I would have thought otherwise. Good to know.

Julie: Welcome to the Lean Meaners! Are you sure you're feeling giddy about your first 1/2 (which you will finish with grace). Maybe it's that you're not fueled properly for your training runs? :lmao: Seriously, you're doing great and it's equally great that you're here (in addition to Ohana).

Big Vic: Congrats on getting in your miles and strength workouts. I was hoping your WTO was a temporary situation, but it sounds chronic. That makes the fact you're sticking to a training schedule especially notable. Small consolation, I know, but I think it's worth noting.

Beth: Welcome back. Your Boston trip sounds amazing. I've always wanted to visit Fenway. The time spent at the Vineyard also sounds great--the ice cream doesn't count as going off the wagon. The lunch ice cream, like the whole trip, was about creating memories with the boys. You can't pass up that opportunity, I say!

Jeanne: Have fun on your trip--don't do anything the rest of us wouldn't! (Actually, I figure you and Nancy probably will. But that's what I want to hear about upon your return!)

As for me: Sick, sick, sick. I'll spare you the icky details but I tend toward nausea and cluster migraines on the rare occasions I get migraines. So I've stayed away for all kinds of screens and lights and detailed visual work. I'm not sure what triggered it, probably the accompanying illness. I expect I'll be well enough for Saturday's run, but that means I'll have missed 1/2 of Monday's and all of today's runs. Grrr.

I'll be posting more regularly as the week progresses, but I'm limiting screen time for a while. I'll read more than post, I think. I'll definitely post 2009 goals tomorrow. And Lisa, do you want/need shorter-term goals than the January marathon?

Debra we missed you. Our WISH board is better because you are part of it. As with all our pretty princesses, each of you are unique and wonderfull. I can wait to see y'all and hug each one of you, some of you twice, heck all of you twice.

Happy Panda:hippie:

Debra: Thank you so much for your note. Please feel better really soon! Sending some of these  for your  so you feel like this :yay: :woohoo:

By the way.... I think you had a preminition... you should read plams or something chickie. :lmao:

I HAVE A NEW PR! :cool1: :yay: :dance3: :cheer2: :rolleyes1

I ran in the 4th Tour de Lance 5K tonight at 6:30 PM. I ran it in a personal best time, a time that has stood in the record books since way back on March 18, 2005! My former PR for a 5K event was: 24:53 (8:02 pace).

Tonight's numbers:

Miles: 3.16
Time: 24:23
Pace: 7:42

Splits:
7:14
7:37
8:18

I felt good, a bit winded after the second mile, but I held tough to the pace I have been running at in training.

I will be enjoying the afterglow of this one.

Have a great night everyone!

:grouphug:

Howard

Hey Leaners.

I'm sitting here, reading everyone's posts from today, and eating my fresh pineapple from Maui. Somebody has to, so it might as well be me.

I was invited to an all day IT seminar, which included breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The best part of it was a round of golf was part of the seminar. First class treatment all the way. The president of the company who put on the whole shebang, was an old friend of mine who I haven't seen in over 10 years. I had no idea he was going to be there, so it was a cool reunion and catching up with one another.

So I spent the entire day hanging out with IT guys, and chasing the little white ball around out in the sun.

For the inquiring minds, I'll just say that running through Waikiki, along the beach, is like being in the middle of a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit shoot. It's difficult to concentrate on my pace, my direction, and my breathing gets erratic. :rolleyes1 And yes, for the ladies, there are beach boys and lifeguard eye candy as well.

Now I'm off to watch the Olympics.
