Bargains

Is it just me, or are other people getting annoyed at the people trying to find a bargain?

Renting DVC points at $10 per point is a great deal. Trying to wiggle a 20-30% discount to $7 or $8 is ludicrous unless the points are about to expire.

How is $10 a bargain?

To book a 2BR at VWL for 5/15 to 5/22 would require 314 points. At $10 per point this is $3140.

To book the exact same reservation through Disney would be $5229.42.

DVC points saved you over $2000 or 40% of Disneys price. How much more of a "deal" would you like?

I am offended when people offer me $7-8 for something which is worth $16.65 (5229/314=$16.65). I and other owners have spent a good amount of money on my DVC membership and pay my annual dues on top of that.

Please do not insult DVC owners by trying to beat us up on price. DVC is as comparable to All Star Resorts as The Ritz is to Motel 6. DVC are among the best accomodations available at Disney. The Shower at VWL is larger enough have a small party and the master suite has a jacuzzi tub. Please keep this in mind when you offer to rent points.

I am sorry, needed to vent. I will get off my soapbox.

(the above not withstanding, I gave had good success in renting points and do not mind providing a great bargain for other fans of Disney. I just hate getting beat up for a lower price)

I agree when renting points at $10/point people are getting a good deal. Just keep in mind that not all of us "renters" look for them cheaper. I recognize my $950 stay at VWL would have cost me $2100 through Disney. May I say thank you to those of you who are willing to even rent us points!

Point taken and agreed to.

Many of the people inquiring to rent are very reasonable in their expectations. Its the one's who want to kill the golden goose who trouble me.

Renting provides a great service to both the renter and the owner. I would just appreciate it more if some of the renters understood the value they were already getting at $10 and not beat us up for an even better deal.

I am trying to rent 56 points and am very new at this. I have read several posts talking about $8.00 a point. I asked a question on one of my posts if it was possible to rent for $8.00 a point in general because I thought it seemed really low and too good to be true.
I did not mean to offend anyone.
I think this renting sounds like a great deal.

As a DVC owner, I think as a group we should raise the price to $11 or $12 per point. Here is my reason; the cost of annual dues keeps going up. The cost to us as owners is increasing, so why not recoup it? Even at $12 per point, it is still a great deal to those who rent. I myself had to rent a few to complete a reservation, and had no problem paying what they asked. To all those who rent their points, you may want to think about this.

Hooray for all you wonderful DVC members!!! If all of those "Renters" would realize what a wonderful deal and a "Magical" Vacation they are going to have....all because of you! :)

I have rented twice now (once from DBorges above!!-Thanks again Dave!) and I am starting to look for points again for my next trip...Infact now that I have rented points, I am sooooo spoiled by DVC properties, it makes a regular room, just a regular room now.

Looking forward to more Spectacular vacations, renting points from wonderful DVC members! My thanks to all of you! If it wasn't for DVC members and this board..none of this would be possible. Right minster22!!!??!!!

This is a great person and someone whom I would deal with a regular time table..

Pooh hats off to you

I do know at certain times of year, the DVC point rental may be a big deal......but I was just investigating that possibility for March....

I can get a room at the Poly for 6 nights for 1700. DVC points for the time period would be over 250 pts. So how is it a deal? Checked Port Orleans for same time.....i can get ressies for 900...DVC pts is 170.

Maybe it is a good deal if you require a villa. NEver priced one of those as I do not even want to look at an oven or dishwasher while on vacation! HA!

I have friends who are DVC members and they just love it! Keep trying to talk us into trying it.

I just think you need to realize that some of us looking on these boards - are indeed looking for bargains to make the trip a bit cheaper. Wanted to give you my money-experience and maybe you can understand where some of these people are coming from.

I have never rented points - might do so in the future - really do not know. I keep looking into it and it just hasn't made sense for our family yet. Maybe it will one day soon!

Have a Disney Day!

DVC point rental can be a great deal at certain times, but not at others. I also think that the larger villas really aren't very reasonable for those of us who want to stay over a weekend -- even at $8-10 per point -- compared with rooms at even a deluxe hotel with codes. And, btw, using Disney's rack rates as a point of comparison really isn't fair either. How many of us looking for a good deal would pay anywhere close to those prices anyway??

All that being said, I am very grateful to those DVC owners who have come down a bit from the standard $10 per point to help me and my family have some magical vacations. I think, when all is said and done, any kind of point rental arrangement takes a good deal of trust on both sides. Knowing that the people you're dealing with are fair and honest is worth a lot. For those of you who cannot lower your per point price from $10 -- or even $12 -- that's fine. I am sure you will find people to pay that price. Those who are willing to rent for less than that, however, shouldn't be perceived as making a "ludicrous" deal... As a renter, I find that offensive. I have always made my requests known at the outset, paid prompty and done everything in my power to make things as easy on the DVC owner as possible. Even though you may feel that my asking for a better price is unfair considering the cost of DVC ownership, I have just as much a right to ask for that price as you have to decline.

I don't wish to offend any DVC owners by this post... I have had fantastic relationships with every one I've dealt with so far and hope to be able to continue in the future. I just think it's unfair to accuse renters of trying to "wiggle" discounts, etc. I always have a set price in mind that I can pay, whether through DVC or Disney. If I can find a DVC owner who, for whatever reason, feels able to rent for that price, great. If not, I either need to readjust my expecations or make other plans. I don't try to cheat a DVC owner just to make my vacation more affordable, however, and it seemed like that was the underlying assumption in the original post that offended me.

Jillhou -

Your comment about the Poly goes directly to my comment about DVC being as similar to All Star as The Ritz is to Motel 6.

Poly is a nice resort at a great location. It is not of the same caliber as a DVC Resort. Is Poly comparable to The Dolphin where you have stayed? While they each have their own pros and cons, I expect you paid more at the Dolphin.

Please try to compare like resorts/accomodations. I wonder what Disney would charge for a studio villa.

As an aside, I did compare a VWL studio March 13 to 19 and it is 98 points or $980 on rental. A studio at OKW would be $2201.04 for the same time period through Disney.

If you want/need DVC accommodations, $10 a point is a bargain. If you want something lesser than it may or may not be, keeping in mind it is not an apples to apples comparison.

I wondered how long it would take to get attacked - not long at all.

ACtually - I paid more at the Poly than the Dolphin and what I paid at the Dolphin was not worth it. Will never stay there again.

I have visited OKW where my friends have their DVC and I would not want to stay there. Not my cup of tea - theming wise, location wise. I much prefer the Poly or Contemp. Great theming, location, location, location.

Renting DVC pts may make sense if you need a kitchen facility. My family does not need this while at Disney.

I have never run into a time when renting DVC pts would make sense for a regular hotel room at Disney. Last trip - we did Concierge at the Poly cheaper than we could have rented DVC pts for a regular room.

To each his own. It doesn't make sense for my family - you evidently find plenty of people willing to pay 10-12 bucks a pt. I will continue to check DVC pts to see if it ever makes sense for my situation. So far - it hasn't......but take it easy.....no one is saying you have to sell your pts for less!

Renting DVC points for a non-DVC resort will never be a good deal.

I wouldn't mind the rental rate to fall to dues. $4 per point. People that rent often enough to be angry about the price and offers are probably violating the spirit of the contract they signed when joining. I have no simpathy for them.

I say "Tough luck, and I hope the rental price gets even lower."

You are absolutely correct. It does not make economic sense to rent DVC points for anything except accomodations at one of the DVC resorts. (As you say, it never will). Using DVC points for "regular" rooms is not a good value ($$ wise) for DVC members, either.

....(snip).....no one is saying you have to sell your pts for less!

Again, you are correct. Renting points is a negotiable transaction. Points will be rented (or not) for whatever the market will bear. IMHO, you may rest assured that posts in threads such as these are unlikey to change the "going rate".

All the non owers are most of the negitive post here ..

(fuuny)

If we the owner got togeher and set a price range for each season and stuck to it poof problem solved..

I do think that 10-12 per point is fair ..

If your looking for a hotel res than book it threw disney at a discounted rate yes you can some times do better.

But in a place like Animal Kingdom Lodge you will not nor at any of the DVC resorts..

The petty ATTACKS here from all of you should stop Be adults and let it go..

I have rented and I have rented out my own points with not an issue for the price i was looking for to people that I felt Ok with (yes POOH PAL your the best) I would do it again in hear5t beat to the people I have worked with before ..

But the so called Point bargin hunters I would let me points Run out before selling them at bargin prices..

If YOUR all so concerned about the Damn Price BUY Vacation club,
That is what I am wondering if your not willing to make the commitment to dvc why sit here and cry about the prices of renting when you will not even take the big step in joining ..

So it is like wasting your breath because actauly YOU HAVE NO SAY the MEMBERS do!!

JUST MY TWO CENTS

P.S. RICH SAID

" wouldn't mind the rental rate to fall to dues. $4 per point. People that rent often enough to be angry about the price and offers are probably violating the spirit of the contract they signed when joining. I have no simpathy for them."

What violation Rich int he contract NO where do it say you can not rent your points for a profit ..

jillhou,

Don't think you are being attacked, please!

Renting DVC points at $10 a point is going to be a great deal for a September or January trip, if you are comparing the studio against a deluxe room, less of a deal if you are comparing against a moderate room, and - if you are just comparing price and are willing to search out a code - no deal at all against a value resort. Its always a deal compared to renting a one or two bedroom DVC villa "rack-rate" from Disney. Its going to cost more points (and therefore, more dollars to the renter) for a March trip, a Christmas trip or a Thanksgiving trip - making it less of a comparative bargain. But my points can be used in September or they can be used in March. I don't rent, but if I did, I don't see why I should be interested in subsidizing your peak time vacation - unless there was something in it for me - point about to expire, unable to rent at the going rate due to a glut of points available, you being a personal friend. The next e-mail I get may be from someone who is traveling in September and is getting a bargain. Or needs to sleep six and has limited choices in on-site Disney accomodations.

Rich,
Can I rent your points for $4 a point...I need 123 to book a week in august and would love to rent from you for $4 a point..i wll pay you $492 for a $2500 vacation..not a bad deal...If I can rent your points for $4 a point I will sell my dvc ownership..there will be no use to own if I can rent at $4 a point..

There are other places to sell your vacations..you dont need this underpriced site to sell your points to people who say $8 is in the budget can you please rent to us..if you only have an $8 budget than book at the all star and stay in a shoe box...i have emailed many people from this boards and offer $12 a point which is still to cheap..most of them do not even respond to tell me that they are not interested..i took the time to respond to thier offer they could at least tell me not interested..i gave up on this board..i sell mine at higher prices other places..i sell to family and friends and get more than $8 a point..and they still get a great deal..

I think occasional renting is a great option, and I'm glad it is available. We've ended up renting 4 and 16 points from a fellow DVC member at one time which helped out our vacation plans. It's also nice to know that should finacial hardship hit in this uncertain economy, or another unexpected event, that renting points is an option to recover some of the investment, or to help out with a little temporary cash flow. I hope that I'm not in that situation in the future, we always use all our points, but I've been interviewing candidates who have just recently lost thier jobs and understand how it could happen.

Thank you to DIS for offering the rent/trade board, it's a great place to be able to work between renters and rentees, it's greatly appreciated. I like the friendly approach much better than using an auction approach.
