Bag Check 3/28 am at Hollywood Studios.

On our past trip in Feb. we had to laugh every time we went through because my poor husband was always selected for the random check. One day he was picked three times at two different parks. I was never selected in the ten days we were at Disney. Just a typical white 60 something American male. He tried to laugh about it and not take it personal!

It's become a game for DD and I to see how many parks we can get into without one of us being selected for extra screening. Since Jan we have had 3 short trips, entering the parks 8 times and at least one of us was selected on 5 occasions. We have started keeping tabs to see who gets selected the most. When we don't get selected we do a little high five. We figure you can't take it personally and just have fun with it.

I understand the reasons for bag checks and random screenings and will gladly go through them - they make me at least feel safer(somewhat). But I do have a few pet peeves.
3. Lastly, I wish they would separate lines for those with small bags and those with backpacks or large bags. The women in our group carry small over the shoulder purses(takes 5 seconds to look in) and sometimes we will carry a sling bag if ponchos are needed and it never fails that we get in a line that has a bunch of backpacks and it takes forever. I know this will never happen but it is one of the things I say every time we are standing in a long bag check line.

That's actually a really good idea. It would likely speed up the process at least by a little bit. I seem to be in that long line too when I go to sporting events and I'm either not carrying anything but my cell phone or I'm carrying a small cross body. The rhyme and reason so to speak wouldn't change just a better spread of the guests and what they've brought with them. You can tell the complaint is more or less from people who don't have a huge amount of stuff and/or those ready to go through the line with their zippers open and all.

Several posters mentioned being patted down? It that correct?
If it is I foresee lawsuits to follow.
It's one thing for Federal Government Officers (TSA) to do pat downs for the airlines and quite another for a private Security company with no Police authority, like Disney, to lay hands on customers.
Even when I was active duty a pat down, not concurrent to an arrest, had to be done under probable cause.

Consent to be assumed when entering private property with clearly marked and defined security measure is plain sight.

I was seeing some people saying that they didn't start checking bags until 9 am. Probably what happened was they were checking and sending people though until the lines for the tapstiles got backed up to bagcheck. Then once the park actually opened and the space started to clear out they were able to start checking bags again and send more people through.

Consent to visually/electronically search.
Not consent to touch.
Touching without consent, or probable cause, by anyone other than Sworn Law Enforcement Personnel, is battery.
And, under some Court rulings even touching by LEO's can be considered battery.

Now maybe it's just the airports I've been thru, but you aren't patted down(if at all) until you've gone thru the scanning things. Sounds like Disneys setup is a much lower level than the airport. It makes me feel ewww to think going to disney may mean a patdown. I hope there are more posts about this , if indeed is happening.

I think you are giving the Disney Security workers way too much credit. I'm pretty sure they don't have Secret Service agents working at the bag check trying to detect every little manifestation.

I'll agree with the previous post about chokepoints. They create large crowds that are densely packed. Crowds inside the park would be more spread out and a less attractive target.

These security upgrades are doing two things: Trying to give everyone the sense they are safe and trying to dissuade attackers from even trying in the first place. A determined enemy will find a way if they really want to. No amount of security or precautions can stop every attack.
Like x100!! If more people understood this, we'd have a lot less security theater...never mind the cost-savings Disney would have - hear it's kinda their thing just now, lol ;)

From my last two trips to Disney, I would do everything I could to avoid bag check. I'm glad I talked the others to go in without a bag. Those lines were ridiculous both times (and this was January and February away from big crowds). I know sometimes it's a must, but try your hardest to fit everything you'll need in your pockets.

I see people post that all the time, and all I can think is Gah!!!! I would not want my pockets full of crap all day. Sounds uncomfortable and annoying. Plus I would worry I would lose something important.

As much as I would love to be bagless, I just could not handle pockets filled with stuff. I would feel weighed down, especially in the Florida heat.:crazy2: Not to mention I look like heck in cargo pants, and I'm too vain to be photographed wearing them.

A non-consensual pat down from a law enforcement officer requires either probable cause or reasonable suspicion that a subject is carrying a weapon.

Since this is a private area/event, different rules apply. I have been patted down numerous times by private security before entering major sporting events, such as NFL and NBA games. I'm sure if I objected, I would simply not have been allowed to enter. It's my choice to consent to the pat down, but my access could certainly be denied

My opinion, do whatever you can to keep the theme parks safe.

Guess that depends on what exactly your taking. I agree I wouldn't want my pockets bulging. With my phone, money clip with id and credit card, a little container of sun screen (that we poured into a travel size container of shampoo), and a bottle of water. Surely not the least bit uncomfortable or annoying. Wore cargo pants the day it was supposed to rain and had a dollar tree poncho in each cargo side and that still wasn't uncomfortable or bulging. If each adult does this with a couple things, I wouldn't think it'd be a big deal and you could save some time waiting to get in. However if you're taking a bag full of stuff (which I personally don't get unless you have an infant), it's probably not going to work.

I am in line at bag check at Hollywood Studios, where I have been since about 8:50. I have been to Disney at Spring Break and Christmas Week multiple times and NEVER seen it like this. They have CMs with microphone headsets going around telling people to get their bags ready even though you cannot see the end of the line. Honestly, it was almost as if they did not start checking bags until rope drop. We had a fast pass for little mermaid that I know is not needed, but we're going to miss. Not sure what is going on here today!!

Wow! Huge lines! !

Would you mind adding the date to the title so that weeks from now we know which today, today is? Thanks! :)

Those long lines you encounter for bag check are there for a reason. That choke point allows Disney Security time to observe guests, and profile them. Someone up to no good is more likely to become nervous, and exhibit telltale signs when they are held up in some kind of security theater such as the bag check area.

Which creates more of a target *outside* of security.

I understand your point, don't get me wrong. But the longer the lines get at those chokepoints, the *less* safe I feel going through them.

That said I also recognize that there is only so much that can be done. I refuse to live in fear or not go places because of what might happen.

I have no problem with bag check. Better safe than sorry! I will say however that it is more random than "profiling them". We were there on a band trip and they made my 14 year old (who is small for his age) go through the metal detectors. He was behind me and I turned around and asked him what he was doing and he said they told him to go through. The cast member then turned to me and said "How old is he? He is old enough isn't he?". I don't know what age they start being "old enough" but, they obviously were not even sure he was old enough to have to do this. This was definitely random and not profiling.

Have a safe trip!

Exactly as they did in Brussels

As they must. It is the world we currently live in - like it or not. I will not let it effect me by not going, but I do support enhanced security even if it slows me down.
Bag security does nothing to stop attacks before the screening point.

I agree - as demonstrated in Brussels.
But bag screening is still necessary in today's world. It has been proven to produce results in various venues around the world
