My husband left this morning for a month long business trip, so he won't be celebrating Thanksgiving with us. My oldest daughter will be away for Christmas.

Who in your family will be away on a holiday this year?

I think my dog is planing on visiting some of the neighbors

My parents will be away for Christmas, so we're celebrating on New Year's. I'll go to my sister's house for Christmas and her daughter will open her Santa gifts; we'll do everything else when my parents get back. Both of my brothers and their kids are always away for every holiday...

My brother is a hot-shot corporate bankruptcy lawyer and just a couple weeks ago was handed a new thing to do. He won't be attending Thanksgiving and probably will not be attending Christmas.

I don't know which company is having troubles, but when I find out, I intend to hate them. Sure hope it isn't Disney, because that would put me in a pickle.

My parents and I went to Disney World for Christmas in 2005 and to Atlantic City for Christmas in 2007.

We have almost always been "away" for Thanksgiving. We have lived 3+ hours away from family most of our adult lives and to travel for Thanksgiving was just a pain. DH always worked the day after Thanksgiving so his employees could have the day off. Sometimes we would invite other out of towners to our house but mostly we just spent it by ourselves. Now we are closer to family and we will head to the in-laws this year for Thanksgiving.

DS17 has been invited to go snow skiing with his friend's family. After his dad and I discussed it, we decided to let him go. I was sad at first but DSIL works offshore and won't be home either. We'll have Christmas at home as usual with Santa for the little kids and have our big family get together on New Year's Day so everyone will be home. Still not sure how Christmas day will be without DS17 there.

It'll be my first holiday without DS18 who joined the Air Force in August. He's made friends with a married couple (weird huh for a kid his age?) and the wife has an apartment off-base and plans to cook for the three of them. He can't figure out how old they are, he thinks early 20s but hasn't had the opportunity to ask. I'll bet this is her first turkey:scared1: On the upside, maybe he'll appreciate my cooking a little more, lol. They've been super good to him, including him on their day trips to the beach and the malls. Transportation is very difficult at his base and without them he'd be stuck there on the weekends.

I expect this to be the first of many holidays without him. I think once DD gives up the Santa thing:laughing: we'll cruise over the holiday, just she and I. In the meantime, there's plenty of extended family around here arguing over who's doing what/when/where:rotfl2:

My DH won't be here for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

It will just be me and my DS (9) for Thanksgiving, but for Christmas, actually the day after we are going up to NJ to see all of our family.

It's ME!!! I'll be spending Thanksgiving in Las Vegas with my friend, leaving my husband and grown kids here at home. We've never been huge fans of the holiday gathering rituals anyway.

:confused3 Why couldn't he take two days off? If he;s a Hot shot he ought to have access to the corporate jet!;)

My SIL& hubby are away to his family -4 states away and her two sons are hunting:sad2:

My DS(19) will be staying on base for Thanksgiving, he's at AIT in San Antonio. But Gpa just made his plane reservations home for Christmas yesterday:banana:

My oldest DD will spend Thanksgiving with her DH's family in NY and also probably Christmas.

My sister and her DH haven't been home for any holiday in 4-5 years, they are in NY. Her daughter stays in WI, haven't seen her in a few years.

My brother, his wife, and their daughters are supposed to be home every other year. One year we get Thanksgiving, the next Christmas. But that hasn't worked in a few years either. He usually brings the girls down within a few days of Christmas for us to keep until just after the New Year.

As for DH's side, his kids will probably go to thier mother's.
We've never really done Thanksgiving with his side.
Christmas everyone will pretty much show up unless one of the brothers is in jail again.:rotfl2: That happens every few years, but if I recall, his oldest brother just got released again a week or so ago.

Last year, me.

I flew down to spend Christmsa with my brother in Orlando.
We ended up surprising my parents and changing my flight home (in January) and using the credit to rebook my brother and I BOTH back home the day after Christmas.

It was nice.

My DH will not be with us on Thanksgiving or Christmas morning.

He is active duty military, working in DC. We live in SC.

We had our "Thanksgiving" meal today, because he is home today through Wednesday morning.

He will arrive on Christmas Day, sometime in evening. This is the first time he has not been here on Christmas morning to see DD10 open her gifts.

I refuse to let myself feel sad; I keep reminding myself and DD that there are thousands of military families out there where the mom or dad are half a world away, and the kids will feel fortunate just to receive a call that day. WE are the lucky ones!
