Awaiting storm....

DC suburbs here. Schools are closed tomorrow and Tuesday. metro buses and metro rail are also closed. All of our outside stuff is secure. We still have pumpkins to carve tomorrow, going to make Rice Krispie treats and an apple pie with DS while we wait out the storm.

Worried about my mom who has a neighbor's tree hovering over her house. We don't lose power often here, but this storm just feels really ominous. I really hope everyone stays safe and it's all hype for nothing...:(

Tip: MIL suggested freezing bottles of water and then transferring the bottles to the fridge to keep it cold if the power goes out. She's so smart!

I'm glad I'm not the only crazy person who is thinking of pulling out the Christmas decorations! :rotfl: I knew I wanted to get everything up early before the baby came, and this is the perfect excuse. I bought headlamps for everyone in the family, so if the power goes out, we'll be decorating the tree by lamp-light! :rotfl2:

DS (age 5) started putting up Christmas clings on the storm doors tonight!

Something about the storm is bringing this out in everyone!

Waiting, waiting, cooking up all the perishables...

School is canceled her tomorrow too. Kind of silly since it probably won't hit us until tomorrow night or even Tuesday morning with our location and we are so far inland that we are almost in VT. Tuesday would have made more sense for a no school call. I told my Dh that he was not going to work tomorrow. he works 90 miles southeast and he's not driving in this. His guys have been texting him all day about whether to go in or not.

Waiting for Sandy in Pa near Philly. Schools are closed tomorrow and probably will be closed on Tuesday. I did most of the laundry just in case the power goes out. :laundy: I feel that the kids and I are prepared. I heard on the news that it is best to charge your cell phone, turn it off, and only turn it on if you need to. Leaving it on will drain your battery. If you have to leave it on make sure the screen light is on the lowest setting. Stay safe everyone!

Checking in from Northern Virginia! All area schools and the federal government has closed. My company has said that they are open, but I am a government contractor so we'll see how that plays out. I have plenty of vacation time saved up, so I really don't care either way. Sometimes there are more important things than work!

Right now we just have lots of rain. DW and I spent the weekend preparing. The best part about this storm is that it forced us to clean out the shed and the garage so that we could bring both cars into the garage. We usually don't loose power, but we'll see. We did loose it for 24 hours during Irene. I have a few UPS in the house, so that will help a little. At least we'll be able to keep our phones charged.

Really thankful I am on the West Coast, sounds like this is gonna be a pretty big one. Although, our Willamette Valley relentless rain is no picnic :(

Anyways, stay safe everyone!

I guess I'm as ready as I can be. Got some extra batteries, milk, water, bread, snacks. Raked up leaves earlier today. I'm not near the water, but if the rain comes in hard and fast, my one drain can't always handle it and water backs up into my garage. If we get that type of rain, I'm usually standing by the door to keep an eye on it so I can push the water away with a broom until it slows up. In past storms, if we lost power it was only for a coulpe of hours.

My biggest concern is my neighbor's tree. It's huge and I just know in one of these storms it's going to come crashing down. Hope it's not this one.

I don't have to go to work tomorrow. :)

Be safe everyone.

Checking in from the south coast of MA. We are as ready as we can be. All stocked up on the necessities, cars gassed up, generator standing by. I took down all the lawn Halloween decorations today. Our schools are closed tomorrow. I live close to the ocean, I can see it from my house. During Nor'easters we get crazy winds that blow up our street from the ocean. I'm praying we don't loose power. No evacuations here yet. But I've already got some things together, just in case. Stay safe everyone and PLEASE listen to the officials. Better safe than sorry!!

We're hunkered down for the duration. Most of Philadelphia area has canceled all but essential services.

My sister works in a city hospital in the outpatient surgical unit. Her idiot supervisor texted all the nurses that tomorrow will be "business as usual". Who goes in for elective surgery during a state of emergency?!!! My sister told her that if they send the National Guard and a hummer to pick her up in New Jersey, she will consider donning her scrubs.

Stay safe and stay dry, everyone!

Maybe they need all hands on deck for injuries etc? That's what happened here last year with our big cyclone and floods.

Checking in from North Jersey about 15 miles from Manhattan we can hear the howling wind and outside is a ghost town. We too are decorating for the holidays. Everyone be safe

HUP? A friend if mine is a paper pusher there and got a call that he is to come in. He has nothing at all to do with medical care, he's a paper pusher! And, he lives in center city and takes SEPTA. Yup, try getting across town in a hurricane in a city that has suspended all public transit. He has no idea how he's getting to work tomorrow.
Not HUP, but it sounds very similar. I don't know who makes these decisions. My sister blames corporate pencil-pushers at Tennant.

This is "business as usual". They didn't cancel the OR schedule as of last night. The supervisor was insisting that the staff get in to work this morning. Delaware has closed all roads. Three counties in NJ have travel restrictions (only emergency personnel permitted on the roads). All mass transit in the area has been halted.

If they needed "all hands on deck", they would have called them in yesterday and paid them for their time. They did it for the blizzard of 1996, which hit on a Saturday. They opened a closed floor in the hospital and used it like a dormitory for the staff.

In MI here...predicting high winds and power outages. We usually don't lose power for more than a few hours but I will probably pick up bottled water just in case.

Stay safe everyone! :grouphug:

Somerset County, NJ here and still no rain but the wind is starting to pick up. Have a generator this time around after no power for 3 days after last Halloween's snow storm so we will have our sump pump, fridge, a tv, and my laptop up and running. HUbby works for a local DPW so he is gone and was told to bring enough clothes for 3 days :scared1:. One piece of advice that mom around here are giving. If you need size "d" batteries but can't get them use a "C" battery with quarters to make up the extra space. C and D battieries are the same voltage!
Everyone stay safe and if you are being mandated to leave... LEAVE

North shore of Suffolk county in Long Island. We are less than one mile from the Long Island sound. We live in a very wooded area. We are prepared. Not too concerned about flooding as we are on a hill and very high. Out schools are closed for both Monday and Tuesday. Everyone stay safe.

Middlesex county NJ here. School is closed and we are waiting. I hope we are prepared, have food batteries and water, but no generator so I'm afraid of losing power/heat. We were in the world for Irene but my neighborhood lost power for 3 days UGH. The good news is that we are on a slab and an incline and have never flooded yet so I'm not as worried about water as others are.

I've been doing laundry like crazy, getting all caught up. The waiting is hard, I just want it over!

Stay safe everyone!!!!!!:wizard::wizard:

Connecticut here. No worries about flooding as we are 30 Miles inland but the high winds has me worried since we are surrounded by a lot of big trees and dreading when
the power goes out after being without for a week last year with both Irene and the October Blizzard

Thinking of everyone up north. I live in FL but all of me family lives in PA.

NJ, 8 miles west of NYC. I didn't buy any extra food - we will be eating from the fridge/freezer on the stovetop and grill when the power goes (have just frozen bags in the downstairs freezer, and will use it as a cooler, I think.

Irene left us without power for 4 days. Our basement will be flooded later today. Just enjoying the computer and the heat while it lasts.

South and West of Philly - rain and wind picking up and the worst is not due until 3:00 AM. Lights flickering a bit but no power outage yet. Stay safe everyone!
