Awaiting storm....

We are about 10 minutes from the beach and very close to the reseverior that broke during Irene. The pipes still have not been completely repaired. Over the summer we had a bad rain storm and they broke again - we had no fresh water for a week! Just drove by them tonight, all they did was put some sandbags and some type of straps around the pipes - it doesnt look good!
The river was already quite high!

We live right near there too. Middletown alerts says they lowered the levels of the reservior and Shadow Lake to try and prevent what happened during Irene. I can live with power loss. Really hoping not to have a water loss.

Essex County, NJ here - about 12 miles west of NYC. The wind is kicking up a lot...not too much rain yet. DH went to CVS this morning because the kids have coughs and I was supposed to have oral surgery today (no go!) so I needed some pain meds. My son's school and the college where DH works (and where DD goes to pre-K) are closed today and tomorrow. After that, we'll see.

We got a backup pump installed last year, which operates on water pressure, and we bought a small portable generator. Hopefully that will get us through. We have loads of food.

The mail was actually delivered today!!

Long Island, NY here:wave2: Rain is getting harder and some gusty wind.Dh is an RN and is working a 12hr shift today and tomorrow.I made him pack a bag so he can stay over night since the hospital is 40 minutes from our home.I wanted to go hug all the trees on our property and ask them to stay put:goodvibes Hope everyone stays safe.

We are in Central PA...Schools are closed today and we've been getting some mild to miserable rain through the morning. The wind isn't starting yet and it's really the wind that I'm most worried about. They're calling for gusts up to 60mph. We have 100 year old trees in our backyard that could do some very serious damage if they come down.

Stay safe everyone. :grouphug:

Watching and waiting here in Ontario, Canada. I cannot believe we are waiting for a hurricane of any sort of substance to affect us this far north. Its a first in my lifetime. My parents always talked about Hurricane Hazel (which struck on October 15th, 1954 and became the most famous Hurricane in Canadian history) but for my generation, it was unthinkable. We are so far from either coast. Blizzards? Ice storms? Yes, we've seen them and withstood them time after time after time. But a hurricane? Pretty strange.

We have been anxiously awaiting the arborist to come and take down an old, 80' tree in our backyard that's half-dead. He has been scheduled to come since early September but has been delayed by one thing or another for the last two months. Now I'm worried that the wind might take it down the hard way  . Its in the far rear of our lot so shouldn't be a safety issue for the house, but still....has me kind of concerned.

To all of those living in the coastal regions which are scheduled to bear the brunt of Sandy's fury....stay safe.

Hi NYC (Bronx) here too, getting very windy my only concern is also my nieghbors tree we are fully prepared and have stuff in the truck if we need to make a quick getaway stay safe all!!

We're supposed to leave for WDW on Wednesday. We shall see how this will impact our trip. :rolleyes1
Hoping everyone stays safe and that the storm doesn't do much damage. I hate losing power. :headache:

Me too! Have fingers crossed that Sandy will just hurry up and get out of here so we can leave. The lights are flicking already.....sigh:eek:

There should be serious fines and criminal penalties for people who ignore mandatory evacuation orders (unless they are somehow infirm and unable to comply.)

The rain is and wind is starting to pick up in Edison, NJ. Power and Direct TV is still on. I always complain about not having a basement for storage, no compaints from me today. Our mail was delivered at 9:00Am this morning. The biggest concern in our area will be the Raritan River and power lines. To everyone in Sandy's path...stay safe and stay off the roads

Starting to pick up here in Central NH.
Just stopped at Jcpenny, the cashier said they are closing the mall at 2pm today.

North shore of massachusetts here.... Really windy my whole apartment is shaking... crazy stuff! Stay safe everyone! :goodvibes

We are praying that all of you stay safe durin this. My Husband is waiting in Virginia for the storm to go through to help restore power, he left Alabama yesterday morning. They keep telling them it is going to be bad. They had everyone fill out forms to vote absentee, I guess he is going to be gone for a while.

NY here - Columbia County home, Dutchess County work. IDK why I had to come to work today, but that is the side-effect of working for hard-headed family!

At home my biggest concern is the 3-story tall pine trees that like to give me trouble right behind my house. Plus the 3-story tall Maple trees on the side are no better. I think, as long as I'm not too angry with the previously-mentioned family member, I will be staying at him house tonight, where there are no trees to worry about.

At work, our biggest concern was flooding. We lost our entire parking lot to Irene, and a portion of our foundation because of record floods. We were in the worst-hit area of Poughkeepsie for Irene, with 3 days of power loss. This storm's rain has been downgraded here, so I think we will be ok.

Didn't do any extra shopping, I already had bottled water and canned goods. I should have filled my grill propane tank, but forgot! Schools closed at 11:15 this morning, so I was glad we didn't lose a snow day (probably will tomorrow though).

Everyone stay safe!! And like everyone else said, if you are in an evacuation zone, just do it! The damage will be there for you to check out on Wednesday. Don't put other's lives in danger to save your dumb behind.

Jersey shore Monmouth county / lost power a few. Hours ago. Very windy, moderately heavy rain. 3-4 trees down on our street do far. No serious damage yet right here. Ban on all driving in our town.

Riding out the storm here in southeastern MA ...along the coast: high winds, wind-swept rains, leaves everywhere, trees down, lights flickering occasionally, the skylight in my attic just blew through and DH is fixing it after a few colorful words directed at Hurricane Sandy....and a quote from George Costanza:

"The sea was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli" :furious:
