I also say go with your original plan - MK first.
We took our 4 kids for our first WDW vacation this past Nov. and we went to MK our first full day(MGM the afternoon/evening on arrival day). It depends on your children's ages. Mine are 14,11,9 and 3 1/2. The older ones liked the other parks better but of course the 3 1/2 loved MK. We had park hoppers
as did my sister and her family who had children aged 5 1/2, 4 and 2 and so this was also their first trip to the world and they hopped over to MK a lot more than we did. If you're children are younger they will want to go for probably more than 2 of your 12 day trip.
Have fun no matter what!!!

I also have to go to MK on the last day . . . don't know why but that's what we have done on the last three trips. This trip will be no different and we may not even get to the MK until 4 p.m. but that is still my plan to go to MK first and walk around a bit, maybe catch a ride or two, and then see SpectroMagic and Wishes if the kids can make it that long. There is just something about the castle and walking into MK that lets me know I have arrived.
