Avatar franchise

I went to our local IMAX theater Friday and DBF always talks about Avatar as the best movie he'd ever seen in IMAX. When I told him that sequels were planned, he got really excited and said he couldn't wait. Well, I can certainly wait but it goes to show that the special effects of Avatar still have a following and I will likely see all the sequels at the IMAX.

Whatever happens with the AK attractions, who knows. I think they will be delayed but still be built.

Thats just it you have no idea the size or scope of this project. Let it ply out then complain lol

I hope it doesn't flop. I also hope that the new movies are better than the first and have a long term following. I really didn't like the first movies message.

Are they Avatar fans? Do they have any Avatar merchandise? The reason that I ask is that you rarely see anything Avatar in stores. Disney is all about merchandising. I just haven't seen anything that suggest that Avatar has lasting appeal to kids. Maybe the sequals will change that?

Do you really doubt Disney's ability to merchandise the life out of anything they get their hands on? ;)

Of course they would know

Two movies this past year alone compared themselves to avatar....the croods and life of pi

Why would movies want to associate themselves to this movie

I haven't seen either of those.

Movies don't compare themselves to other movies. Critics compare movies to other movies. I've also heard Avatar compared to the Smurfs.

The point isn't whether or not Avatar was a good movie. 2 of the 3 Star Wars prequels are generally loathed. The point is, does the story and do the characters have a place that will last in pop culture. Star Wars does. Avatar doesn't. You can go to any retail store and find some sort of toys or other merchandise associated with Star Wars and Harry Potter. Can the same be said for Avatar?

Not everything Disney touches turns to gold. Ask the director of The Lone Ranger. They advertised and merchandised the heck out of that movie, and it tanked.

But how do you know if it'll last in pop culture? You don't. No one does. If you personally dislike something that's fine, and it makes sense you don't want to see a themed land based on it. But there's no way to tell Avatar's lasting appeal.

I personally liked Avatar. I thought the visual and special effects were fantastic, and while the story wasn't entirely original ("Blue Pocahontas" gets thrown around a lot), it was still very good.

I think a big issue is that so many people watch this movie wanting it to be bad, or setting such high expectations they're disappointed, and then they get very angry over that.

Avatar is one movie right now, and it's one movie that did well, was well received, and has promise for a whole new series. How can we judge its lasting appeal when we've only seen the first movie? How can we judge it as a series when again, we've only seen the first movie? We can't.

I'm excited to see what Disney does with Avatar. It's a refreshing change in pace, and just might revitalize the quality and craftsmanship of Imagineering.

98% of the people who go to the parks are not going to say "hey the e ticket was great the themeing is incredible but the cultural relevance is not there"

Wheres the cultural relevance for mysterious island at disney sea? Or is it just a cool land

People are judging before they ve seen any model or concept art

This x1000. Its like because people know what Disney is striving for, they're angry about it. How many people have actually seen Song of the South? Many haven't, yet Splash Mountain is still a loved attraction.

Because its not what they want, they hate it. I'm sorry to sound that way, but just because its not Star Wars Land or whatever else you'd want, Twilight Land, I don't care, that doesn't make it a failure. Star Wars has been around for almost 40 years, of course its a bigger franchise. People just need to give Avatar a chance.

i guess what you re saying is if its not star wars they shouldnt build it

i ll share this story one more time....i teach and we we re discussing china and looked at a picture of the huangshun mountains..i asked every class what these mountains reminded them of and every class said avatar..so you have middle school kids who when this movie came out were in elementary school recognized avatar right away

this story is obviously ancedotal but still important because no one has their button on cultural relevance like teen agers

not saying avatar is star wars but if it has a great e ticket, unique themeing recognized from avatar (ie floating mountains bioluminecent plants and animals) it will be very successful

I never said I hated Avatar. In fact, I stated that I liked the movie. Not sure why people insist on saying things that aren't true.

As to whether or not Avatar will stand the test of time, I think the answer is already No. I'm not a huge Star Wars or Harry Potter fan, but there's no denying the impact it's had on pop culture. We're talking films, books, toys that have been around for, in some cases, close to 40 years. We're talking about franchises that have conventions all over the place. We're talking about movies that are on TV constantly. Avatar was a huge hit, but that doesn't translate into pop culture phenomenon. Since it's release on DVD and Blu-ray, I haven't seen a single piece of merchandise in a store for it. People weren't lining up outside stores the night before it came out on DVD to buy a copy.

What defenders are saying is sort of my point. "We'll have to wait and see." Really? Disney is gambling with something of this size with a "Let's wait and see" attitude?

If I were a Disney shareholder I'd be begging for them to rethink this idea. Again, 1 attraction based on a movie is one thing. If interest wanes, the ride can always be rethemed. Building an entire area based on something as uncertain as Avatar is, in my opinion, a HUGE risk, one that doesn't seem to make a great deal of sense.

It was. It has since been passed by The Dark Knight.

The highest rating ever for FX belongs to my username.

If we're going to use pop culture popularity Disney should be building a land based on Twilight.

and im pretty sure avatar passed dark night..ill have to find the article

twilight is about vampires not sure you want that in a theme park setting...greatest movie franchise ever is the godfather but probably not a good idea to have that either

here ya go
edit: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ent...e-blu-ray-sales-record-in-just-four-days.html

similarly hunger games has huge cultural relvance but again doesnt quite fit a theme park setting...kids killing kids in all

Sons of Anarchy is a TV show.

Avatar did pass Dark Knight, but Dark Knight overtook it.

Harry Potter was a very rare opportunity. An entire land could be built around it and people would come to see it. There was never any doubts. We can't say that about Avatar.
