Avatar franchise

We will have to agree to disagree. I believe avatar will be this Generations Captain EO

Sons of Anarchy is a TV show.

Avatar did pass Dark Knight, but Dark Knight overtook it.

Harry Potter was a very rare opportunity. An entire land could be built around it and people would come to see it. There was never any doubts. We can't say that about Avatar.

believe it or not many people on these disney boards mocked universal for the harry potter purchase

anyways good debate

The major difference here, is that potter and SW are family movies, and the same cannot be said for avatar. The amount of vulgarity and profanity in avatar precludes it from being mass marketed to the elementary and middle school set. As they are the biggest merchandise base, I see a deal-breaker problem. Not sure why its gone any further than that with execs. Unless JC has plans to G rate his sequels (right!)

the big question is, will Cameron be able to maintain interest in the series for that long. I feel like the buzz and excitement from the first one has disappeared. (Granted, it has been quite a while since it first came out.)

I wouldn't be surprised if only a 1 or 2 sequels get made.

I'm not a movie person by any means, and though I saw avatar, I don't have strong feelings about it. The bigger issue to me, is that I don't like feeling like Disney is buying into Hollywood. I feels like it takes away from the magic that is Disney to me. I know they bought the rights, but it feels phony and invasive to me to bring in something that wasn't Disney to begin with. That being said, I don't like Star Wars involvement either, and generally avoid all SW areas and events when I'm in WDW, though I know I'm in the minority there. I feel like there are so many other opportunities from Disney history that they should make new again before taking a chance on a franchise that may or may not have longevity in popular culture.

99% of the public couldn't name 1 character nor did thy care about the characters.

There is no public desire or base for Avatar.

I represent the majority.

Here's the thing:

1.Do you know who Darth Vader is?
2.Do you know who Jake Sulley is?

100% of anyone you ask can answer YES to question #1.
Maybe 5% (and that's being generous) can answer YES to question #2.

98% of the people who go to the parks are not going to say "hey the e ticket was great the themeing is incredible but the cultural relevance is not there"

It's another to build an entire land based on something the average person knows or cares little about.

Not sure why people insist on saying things that aren't true.

:rotfl2: Is this the make up your own numbers/stats board?

This is really the key to me right here, and what bewilders me about this decision. Again, it's not a question of whether or not Avatar was a good movie. Personally, I think it was. But as a movie buff and someone who spends an awful lot of time on movie message boards and reading up on this type of stuff, I truly don't feel as though there is any major interest in seeing more Avatar.

Now personally, I can't stand the Lord of the Rings films. But there's no doubt, those have a place in pop culture, so as disinterested as I would be if Disney looked into them for the parks, I would understand it. I just don't understand the Avatar thing.

Worked out ok when they bought Winnie the Pooh...

Meh, I'd check out Avatar Land. I liked the movie, but I was surprised to hear about these plans. My curiosity is piqued, at least...

I like how people are talking about this franchise not having longevity when they just announced 3 sequels will be made. Cameron wouldn't be dumping huge amounts of money into 3 sequels at once if he didn't have the feeling and feedback that it is wanted. Cameron has been really really successful in pretty much everything he's ever done. He's a good guy to place trust in for future success.

Mainly, its people with gripes that voice their opinions, which is why the DIS is littered with negative comments on Avatar. The place will be pretty amazing I'm guessing, once it's complete.

I don't have a gripe. As I said, I enjoyed Avatar.

Cameron has been successful, no doubt. The problem is, he gets something stuck in his head, and that's all he concentrates on. He spent nearly 20 years on Titanic. Now, that was an amazing movie and one that has stood the test of time.

The reason why people (I believe) have an issue with Avatar is simply because it was nothing worth building an entire land for. Just because a movie makes a lot of money doesn't mean it will translate to people being interested in it more than the movie. I feel as though Disney is just trying to duplicate the success Universal has had with Harry Potter. That's all well and good, but I believe they're barking up the wrong tree with Avatar.

I think the overall theme of the movie, combined with the outstanding visuals, will make a complete, immersive land. Really, they can theme any type of ride however they want to make it fit. I really don't see the big deal about people not wanting to go to Avatar Land.... are they really going to skip over a good ride experience because of the land theme?

Exactly how I feel! Avatar is simply Disney trying to make up for the fact that they screwed up BIG TIME by letting Harry Potter slip through their fingers. Avatar is no Harry Potter. Harry Potter is a 7 book, 8 movie phenomenon, that a generation of kids grew up with and adore.

I think Disney should wait and see how the next sequels go. I liked Avatar but frankly was happy with the way it ended. I really have no desire to see what happens next. Will I visit Avatar land? Sure, when it opens I'll check it out the next time I'm down but it's not going to get me to buy a ticket and hop on the next plane to Orlando.

No, but people who have interest in Avatar aren't going to make a special trip to Orlando to see it, like people are doing with Harry Potter. And that's what Disney is obviously hoping for. They made the biggest goof in the history of theme parks by letting Harry Potter go, and now they're trying to make up for it. If they were smart, they'd skip it, and go full throttle on the Star Wars land at DHS. THAT will bring people to Orlando.

Bottom line - Avatar is not Harry Potter or Star Wars.

Bingo. People are doing that for Harry and would do it for Star Wars.

Transformers movies (crappy as they've been) have been HUGE money-makers, and Universal did the right thing - They built 1 attraction for it. I don't know what makes Disney think a large percentage of people care that much about Avatar anymore.

Haha, you've got me there! I do often forget that Winnie the pooh wasn't always a Disney thing. The difference there is that pooh was always something made for children and could make a more natural transition to Disney, whereas avatar is not, and is clearly a reach at older audiences. Children will surely get into it, but parents aren't likely to start showing it to their 3 and 4 years.

I also agree with what others have said, I would def check it out, but no special trips for it.
