I know there are other threads about this, but I guess I never understood.
AKV value studio is available online for 7/18 for cash, but not points. I have had that waitlisted for several weeks but just saw it for cash today, so don't know how long it has been available for cash.
I thought they were not turned over to DRC until 60 days out. Obviously, I am wrong. I have read sometimes you can call and Member Service will pull it out of cash inventory so you can book it with points. How often does that happen? Think I would have a chance? What are the circumstances when they do that?
Thanks in advance.

Once a reservation is made outside of the DVC resorts (EX: DCL, ABD, RCI, etc) those points used by the member are turned into a reservation(s).
Those reservation(s) are then turned over to CRO for cash reservations to pay for the trip outside of DVC and any extra is used to offset MFs.
DVC is required to own at least 2% of all DVC resorts to use for maintenance, breakage, etc. These points (reservations) can be transferred to CRO at any point when maintenance is not expected for that time frame and the breakage can be sent to CRO at 60 days out.

Nope - virtually zero chance they would pull that inventory back. It was turned over either to "pay" for an owners trade outside of DVC or as part of DVC's own owned inventory.

And its very likely not really a value studio. CRO lists the lowest point rooms to give flexibility when placing cash guests, but because those rooms are wanted by DVC members, they are usually "upgraded" - upgraded only that DVC had no intention of giving a value room to start with. If you book a cash room at BWV through CRO, you always book Standard, you never stay Standard.

At AKV they actually turn over all the different categories. CRO website also states the difference in the value room vs the standard. I'm sure they would place the cash customer into another room if they had inventory problems but they do use all the categories there for cash - including Concierge at times.

Do you know that they've actually put people into the Value rooms on cash? Or do they regularly "upgrade" them? I'm a little shocked they'd put out the concierge rooms.

Not 100% but I do believe they are most likely to be in an actual value room. In some cases that could be better than an upgrade to a "standard" room. I too was shocked about Concierge - enough to contact them about that. :sad2:

By far, the lion's share of the cash availability is NOT from breakage or DVD-owned inventory. It's from Members who elected to use their points for cruising, stays at the California Disneyland resorts or one of the other options in the Disney, Concierge & Adventurer's Collections.

DVC must send enough nights at the DVC resorts to CRO/DRC to recover enough cash to pay for those choices. That inventory is no longer available to members and only very rarely would it be pulled back for a points reservation. If/When it is, DVC would have to send other nights to CRO/DRC to replace it. (If that was done routinely, it would be an ever increasing amount getting pushed forward - and will eventually make those choices even more expensive or perhaps not available at all). As it is, my guess is that DVC has to send at least 2-3 nights for every night a Member chooses to book out of the Collections mentioned earlier. That's one of the reasons that explains why the trades are so expensive.
