Looking to see if anyone has taken of these excursions while in Rome, Italy. My family (2 adults and 2 children 16 & 12) and I are heading out on a 7D cruise out of Barcelona next May. Trying to figure out which one is the best bang for the buck and time.

My ideas are
1. St Peter's Basilica, Roman Forum and Outside Colosseum CV32
or
2. Taste of Rome with Inside Colosseum - Small Group Departure CV26,

if anyone completed any of these i would love to hear back how it was ? i know one goes inside the Vatican Museum the other goes inside the Colosseum .

With 4 people, you may want to consider a private tour, which would be about the same cost as a Disney excursion but would allow you to see much more because you wouldn't need to wait for everyone else at each stop. We have had good experiences with both Rome in Limo and Joe Banana tours. The drivers stay in touch with their home office to make sure to allow for traffic and other delays and get you back to the ship in plenty of time.

Even with a private tour, you may not be able to fit in full guided tours at both the Vatican and the Coliseum, so you may need to choose which one your group would prefer. I would choose the Vatican, but my husband would choose the Coliseum -- you can't go wrong either way.

Another vote for Rome in Limo! They were excellent. We also had a private guide to take us through St. Peter's and the Sistine Chapel. DCL excursions in Europe are expensive but that isn't the worst part.
A group of people, any size, can only move as fast as the slowest person in the group. If you're healthy and able-bodied, others will slow you down. Sometimes people return late to the meeting spot. A couple from our group on the Nice/Monaco tour went into Monte Carlo and never came out. We waited 30 minutes for them and finally left them.

With a private tour, you spend as much or as little time you want in each area. It's all about what interests YOU. Our guides at Rome in Limo assured us we would get to the ship around the same time as the big buses.

We only did the Nice/Monaco group tour through DCL because we had some OBCs to burn up.

Another vote for private excursions in Rome. If you’ve not already done so, please read the Know Before You Go for CV26, the one which includes inside the Colosseum ,especially the 13th point which says -

  • Due to a maximum capacity at the Colosseum, groups with reservations may be stopped and delayed. If the queue at the Colosseum is longer than a 45-minute wait, your guide will forego entering the Colosseum, providing a full explanation on the grand ruins from outside. Additional free time will be given to compensate.
They will skip going inside and you get no compensation or “refund”except free time.

CV32 has similar wording in the 12th point re skipping inside the Vatican -

  • Should your guide determine that the queue at the St. Peter's Basilica security check point is longer than a 45-minute wait, they will forego the interior visit of the basilica and provide you with a full explanation and description while outside. You will be provided more time during your shopping or free period to compensate for not entering the basilica.

Busses often have to park farther away - the Know Before You Go info also notes there may be an added walk of over half a mile to get closer to entrances, which could impact any inside touring time.

Also, for any tours with include a stop at Trevi Fountain, starting 1 February 2026 the city of Rome is instituting a tourist fee of €2 per person to be able to go on the famous steps. No word yet on how that will be done or whether any port adventures will include the paid access or it would just be a photo op from afar.

Because of the distance to/from Rome along with the traffic, many PAs to Rome with inside visits include such caveats. As noted above, any group only goes as fast as the slowest people. If your heart is set on going inside either the Vatican or Colosseum, or both, then a private tour is the only way to go.

We used Tours by Locals, where you can also customize most any tour. We were first off, into our tour-included car, and on the road while the excursion groups were still gathering at the meeting point checking in, and making their way to security to exit. Yes it might be a pricier option, but seeing the crowds & traffic in Rome it was totally worth it to ensure seeing the things on the Rome wish list.

We used Joe Banana for 3 tours in Italy (for a family of 6) and they were top notch. They arranged a private guide for the Vatican and they obtained the tickets needed. Going to Rome by private vehicle really saves valuable time!
