August 2014 Car Rental Deal Watch!

Anyone else feeling as discouraged as I am? I got a good price back in June (255 for a standard 10 days through Alamo) but I was hoping to see some prices going down especially now being less than three weeks out. You think it'll still come down?

I am starting to think the price I got is the best its gonna get....Seeing what the prices are today, I am glad I got my 10d for $180

I took a chance on Hotwire as I was getting no where with any rental car company or codes for the days we needed for a minivan:(. The cheapest I could find was $90 a day and most were in the $150/ day range! We only needed a car for five days so maybe that is why it was so expensive? Anyway, took a chance and tried Hotwire and got a minivan for 32.99/day! From hertz:). Very happy with that rate:)

I rented an intermediate from Budget for Aug. 26-Sept 2 for $180 using Southwest BCD U072700 coupon MUWZ107. Hopefully it will come down more but at least its $36 less than my Alamo rate. Linda

Just got an Intermediate 10 day out of Tampa using the codes for $265. That is my cheapest. Thank you jerseygirl.

I have resolved myself to the fact that my current reservation with National using the KLM code ($466 for two weeks in a midsize SUV, so $233 per week taxes in) is most likely the best I am going to get. This was booked waaayyy back in April.

April!!! :confused3

Rentals this year have definitely not followed the same pattern as in previous late August vacations. Very strange, indeed.

I will say, though, that my initial target had been "under $250 a week", and I was able to beat that by a smidge. I will still keep looking and watching rates until we travel, but I'm guessing this is going to be the best we'll see. We are now only 26 days until our vehicle pick-up :drive: .

I agree!! I was hoping for much lower but don't think that will happen. I am at $430ish for 10 days with a minivan. I hate the idea of spending that much but don't see an alternate! I'll keep checking every day but don't see any downward spiral!

I'm hoping it comes down more it's the best rate I've gotten including an add'l driver in months. We are new to Budget but have heard good things we used to rent from National then Alamo. I'd rather stay away from the smaller rental places. I wiil be posting if my rate goes down I have gotten some great rental deals from Dissers posting their deals with their discount codes! :goodvibes Linda

How did you get that? I'm looking for a 10 day minivan rental and the cheapest I can find with an in-terminal rental company is $494 via Undercover Tourist.

Best price I could find for months on 12 day minivan rental from 8/2 to 8/14 out of MCO in terminal was $750 via Costco (with Avis). Someone suggested I try booking via my Chase Visa card rewards site, and I got one through Alamo for $530 out the door (and applied $300 worth of rewards towards it).

Not bad, but still will be the most I have ever spent on a car rental in Disney. Wow have prices skyrocketed.

Just wanted to share in case anyone is looking at a one way rental. We got a compact for Aug. 28 through Alamo for $15 a day, picking up at MCO and dropping off at the Dolphin since we're staying at YC. We primarily want the car to do a grocery run and the $15 ($21 with tax) is cheaper than a delivery service or taxi and we can take our time and get exactly what we want. Plus get to our resort quicker than riding DME. We're only renting it for 1 day, may even drop it off at the Dolphin that same evening. The rentals FROM Dolphin to MCO are much higher, so they must need cars there from the airport.

So, here I was all happy with my $250 minivan from AAA/Dollar (out of Tampa)...
Then I read the thread about Dollar and decided to switch to $266 Costco/Alamo. I figured that was really good as well.

We were flying into to Tampa because the airfare was literally about two-thirds to about half the cost of Orlando, and that adds up for 5 people. Plus the car rental cost is much better as well.

Then I got a VM from my air booking agent today and found that the schedule changed for our connecting flight home so we had to contact Delta and rebook.

On the HUGE upsides, they booked us both in and out of Orlando, arriving in Orlando an hour earlier and leaving Orlando an hour later (also getting home an hour earlier because it is now a direct flight)... for no fee and no price difference (except the $27pp 9/11 tax we have to pay at Orlando but not at Tampa)! So we're technically getting about an extra 3 hours of vacation on both our arrival and departure days!

On the downside, now we have to rent a minivan out of Orlando, and I'm now feeling the pain everyone else is! $540 now... Dang... Ah well, the extra time and getting a direct flight home is way worth an extra $410 (total difference between price of rental + 9/11 fees).

Just a thought... Should I grab a minivan from Undercover Tourist/Alamo instead? The price is like $384. I might need some Blue Man Group tix anyway...

What is going on with the rental prices this year?? I'm booked at $120 more then I paid last year. :furious:

I know-it's crazy! I keep hoping that now that I'm 2.5 weeks out, prices will come down a bit, but it really hasn't!

Just wanted to share that we were desperately trying to find a reasonable rate for a minivan rental for our trip in August and could find nothing!!! Not even with codes! All the companies wanted $90/day and up! Crazy:(. So I took a risk and tried Hotwire:). I knew I wouldn't know what rental car company I was getting but I really needed a better rate:(. So I put our dates in and a minivan pops up for $32.99/day!!! Yay! I push accept and got hertz as our rental company:). I am beyond excited! One for getting a great rate and two for getting a great rental car company to boot:). Worth a try for all of you struggling to find a good rate:). Good luck:)

What were the fees and taxes after the $32.99 per day? I have found lots of "deals" but once they add on all the fees and taxes it comes out to closer to $70.00 a day!
