Well, back home again from another great Disney trip. I hope all of you are finding good car rates. I'll give you a few post-trip car related items...
I posted just before I went away that my Alamo rate at reservation time mysteriously went up about $15 when I went to do online check-in. I still have no idea why, as I made no changes to the reservation. I brought a printed copy of my original reservation with the lower rate in case the higher rate showed up at the kiosk. The higher rate did show up at the kiosk, so I took the rental contract receipt to the desk and a manager fixed it for me. What confused both of us is that the base rate changed, not the taxes, etc. Anyway, they were very nice about fixing it. Just bring documentation! If you get the same rate when you do your online checkin, you should be ok.
For those of you using Alamo, I can't emphasize this enough: do your online checkin and use the kiosk! You do not need to be an Alamo Insider to do this. When I arrived at MCO, there was no one using the kiosks and there had to be a half hour worth of people in line at the rental counter. The nearby Dollar counter was practically empty, so those of you using that shouldn't have too long a wait.
Again with Alamo, the lowest rate I found turned out to be 2 days before departure. Dollar and
Enterprise's lowest were 17 days prior to leaving. In my case, I had an Alamo Standard from Aug 4-11 for $143 total using the Costco contract ID and a United Airlines Dividend Miles $30 off/week coupon code.
Another time saver I almost always use at MCO: I go to the Alamo kiosk while the family waits for the bags. Then I went back to baggage claim and beat the bags by a minute or two, then directly out to the garage. If you do this, you need to take the escalator down one level to get to the rental counters/kiosks, but to get back to baggage claim, you need to take the elevator. The up escalators from rentals go up to ticketing.
The fullsize/standard row at Alamo (yes, its the same row, so book a standard, not a fullsize) was almost all Altimas and Impalas. We took an Altima and was very pleased with it.
There are still two tolls between MCO and I-4, whether you take the North Exit or the South Exit out of the airport. I think the North Exit (SR-528) may have been slightly cheaper ($1.25 each toll?) than the South Exit (SR-417) ($1.50 each toll), but the risk of hitting traffic is much higher when you use the North Exit. I almost always recommend using the South Exit for Disney.
When we arrived on the 4th, gas prices were $3.499 at the Hess stations on Disney property. That dropped to $3.429 by the time we left. On the way back to the airport yesterday (leaving Epcot), I stopped at a 7-Eleven gas station just before the GreeneWay (SR-417) for $3.379. Just beware there are still some stations with predatory pricing...I know there's one (Shell) near the outlets on Vineland Ave. usually around $1.50 + market rates per gallon, the Mobil near Downtown Disney and I-4 is very high and there was a station on US-192 East just before I-4 that was $4.959 a gallon. I also remember seeing a station on SR-536 that was reasonable for cash, but had a $1.50/gallon surcharge for credit. Just be careful... A good rule of thumb is to use the onsite Hess stations.
Finally, a good portion of the Downtown Disney parking lots are closed. What they've done is opened up the parking lots across the street. I would encourage you to use them. The walk isn't bad (lighted parking lots, signaled crosswalks, etc.) and it'll save you the time of trying to find what spots there are in the main lots. I think one of the lots (more towards the West Side) might have shuttles running.
