Atlanta, have you made your milk & bread run?

This morning on the news they mentioned that since this is a "state of emergency" all absentee rules should be adjusted. Please have him check with HR.

He should check with his HR department to see whether this would hold true under these extreme circumstances. Our roads are simply impassable. How could any employer realistically expect anyone to get to work? Seriously.

thank you both :) the foreman he talked to said he couldn't tell him not to come to work, but that he didn't blame him for calling in. the plant is open, and there are a few people there (the ones who live nearby), but not many. the HR director is a facebook friend, i think i'll send her a message and see if it counts against him. the problem is, the state DOT didn't list the roads as closed (just "impassable), but our county EMA did-the conflict is the sticking point. but you're right, robin, the whole state is under a state of emergency, so maybe that will help. we'll see! no matter what, at least he's safe. the bonus isn't worth it, and the point will be erased from his record in 6 months.

Forgot to add:

My MIL works for the Board of Regents. If you're even heading East or West on I-20 through Atlanta her building is one of those two whote marbel rectangular buildings next to the capitol. Anyway, she's been called off work. She lives in Powder Springs, and since they've closed parts of I-20 (from what they told us a few minutes ago in a phone call) there's no way she can get to work.

I have a job interview in North Georgia tomorrow morning. I called and left a message & they havent called me back. I am a nurse, so I know I will work in bad weather, but well, common sense seems to dictate rescheduling. I feel like I need to try to get there in the am.Ugh. I wish they would return my call.

No school today/tomorrow, base closed and thankfully dh didn't have to go in afterall and tomorrow is called off too. Inch or so of ice on my road. Everyone stay safe.

Keep trying to call. . .the roads are really bad up here!!

I would have to leave here at 6 am to attempt to get there on time, and they wont be open yet. They prob wont get in or call me until after 7am, and at that point Id never make it on time. I am debating just staying home waiting on their call and hoping they say reschedule.

That's good news that he didn't have to go in!

School is out here again tomorrow. Fort Benning was closed today but right now non-essential personnel has a 9am report time tomorrow.

DH just ventured out to return some movies to Redbox if he can get out of the neighborhood. Oldest DD had a friend spend the night and that child's parent was able to drive over to pick her up from quite a long way away. She said the roads were slushy but the ice wasn't too bad. It is supposed to refreeze tonight though so I guess that is why the called off school for tomorrow.

Ft. Gordon was closed today as well, and they have a delayed start for tomorrow.

I'd be surprised if they are going to be doing interviews tomorrow. Most hospitals are working under emergency conditions right now. The people who got there will be workign round the clock until the roads get cleared. Those people who are non-clinical workers(not nurses or other caregivers) will be assigned other jobs, like stocking the ER, cleaning floors, emptying trash, and delivering food and medicine. I highly doubt that their nurse recruiters will be recruiting, under these severe circumstances. And if they can't give you a break for this weather, well, you don't want to work for them anyway.

Back in 1993 I was working at the Children's Hospital. I was also 38 weeks pregnant. No matter, I was required to show up and work. I couldn't get out of my neighborhood, but they sent a Yankee guy with a 4WD truck to bring me in. It took us nearly 3 hours to get there. We all took turns getting rest and the staff was really nice to me and let me have extra rest, since i was almost ready to drop that baby. In the morning, the hospital CEO came around and personally dropped off coffee and breakfast. He told every one of us, individually, how much it meant to him that we came to work. It ended up being a pretty good experience. But the minute the roads got open, they sent me home. I think they didn't realize how pregnant i was until they saw me--I was a whale! They don't do deliveries in a children's hospital and I think i made them all kinda nervous.:goodvibes

How far north are we talking about?

NO WAY would I drive in this mess tonight! The roads are refreezing and the temps haven't been above 30 degrees all day. If the big 18-wheelers can't even navigate this stuff, the rest of us sure can't. You don't want to be spending the night in your car in a ditch.

My dad is head of the gas and water dept for our city and instead of his city truck, he took our 4 wheel drive farm truck to work today. He had to drop 2 tires on the shoulder to get traction to get in. They had a fun time today not to mention the tractor blowing a hydrolic hose.

Anyone that has lived through one of these ice storms before, do I have to worry about the pipes? I just thought about that ugh. We have lived here a few years now and dh has never missed work for weather and I have never seen anything like it! We've had a bit of snow before but not this.

I keep the house really warm and I ran the dishes/laundry etc. today so should the pipes be ok?

Leave your faucets dripping tonight to help protect against freezing. Even though I think I'll be fine, I intend to drip mine for the next several nights.

got a message back on facebook from the HR director at DH's plant-she said that with the roads closed, she didn't expect anyone to try to come to work, and that it wouldn't count against DH.

Excellent. That makes perfect, logical sense.

Great news!

Ok the place I am interviewing has a 2 hour delay they are open. One of the highways I need to take thre is closed. I feel obligated to show up but this means ignoring my common sense. Ugh.

Just got the email that the university is closed for snow day #3 tomorrow. I was hoping we'd be able to go back, but the roads, (especially the unplowed ones) are just not clear enough. Went to work for 30 minutes before being sent home due to lack of anything to do, so I stopped by Publix on the way home. I have never seen the produce section so empty! Next time, I'll know to stock up on lettuce and bananas in addition to the bread and milk.

Which university? I'm sure the school closings for tomorrow will begin posting soon. Just a few minutes ago it was snowing AGAIN! So now, I am officially tired of this. If we had the equipment to handle it, that would be fine, but I don't like being totally shut down.
