One of the issues that I have had with the Bush Administration has been the "soft of illegal immigration" stance and weak boarders. Michael Chertoff, Dir. of Homeland Security announced today that his department aims to expell without exception, all those who enter this country illegally. Its about time!

What if their re-entry results in their deaths or torture?

Then they apply for asylum, are granted a hearing, and if they can show adequate grounds -- are offerred legal status.

I don't honestly see how they're going to enforce it.
and Rich, if you're leaving your country to escape certain death and torture then there are legal ways to obtain asylum.

I'd love it if the government decided to actual *do* something about all the illegals, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I hope there's a line of Americans to take the jobs that these people do...I'll say that in the construction industry I have yet to see one caucasian American boy signing up to trudge through the city sewer system to fix a crack.

That's because ...why pay an american a decent wage when you can hire an illegal for pennies.........

What would you do with all the illegal parents who have US-born children here?

Are you kidding? Do you have ANY idea what these guys get paid?? What's a "decent wage"? $15 an hour? $20 an hour? These wages w/ overtime opportunities?

are you serious? you're part of the problem, not part of the cure.

How am I part of the problem might I ask? And how are you part of the cure?

What I'm asking is this - the jobs that nobody else wants but have to be done, who is going to do them? I'm not condoning illegals, but what I'm saying is it's just not that easy of wiping them all out of the US. There are repurcussions. If someone thinks you can take these workers out of the US, fill in w/ willing legal workers then you're not living the reality of the service industry of the US.

I live in the nusery capital of the world, and most, if not all of the nuserymen are mexican (not steriotyping here, but 99% of them are illegal) when these men and women are expelled, who is going to take their nusery jobs? Whats going to happen to the economy of this city? Bush needs to find a better way to deal with this than deporting them all. How about getting all of the working ones VISAs? :confused3
ETA, these people are working the jobs no one else wants.

Obviously not enough or they'd have lines of (how did the previous poster put it) caucasion american boys signing up.

::yes:: It's all so easy for Mr. Chertoff to talk about taking action (finally!) on illegal immigration -- a problem that's been ignored for way too many years by too many administrations. But actually doing something is completely different. I have a sad feeling this is just a lot of "smoke and mirrors" because of the mounting criticism on this issue from a number of conservative talking heads.

ROTFLMAO

You really can't believe this will happen, do you?????

First, though, before you say yes, study what Chernoff said. He proposes to do the no exception rule, but admits that he has no infrastructure to do it, and his new budget will allow hundreds of beds in the facilities. Of course, they have hundreds of thousands to deal with. He also says that he has no plans to round up people, as that would cost billions.

And, Bush does not want to get rid of illegals, as they are good for the economy, which means they are good for businesses, which is what Bush is all about.

There is a plan to allow illegals to work on Visa's, not be thrown out. Just more talk. Personally, I wonder why people are so against immigration, due to the fact that everyone here immigrated to this country, or their kin did. Good for you, but not for them.

Take away the penalties, allow open immigration, and take away the stigma. Probably leads to progress.

Look at the comments, more double talk.

Since everyone is so up in arms about this, you tell me...at what hourly rate would you take a job crawling through a city sanitary sewer system in two feet of raw sewage?

How much for you work the nurseries for 12 hours a day in the blistering heat?

I'm just curious. The construction companies around here accept applications unsolicited, on that app there is a requested rate of pay box. ANYONE can apply and write what they would like to be paid. Who applies? Not Joe Smith living in his nice suburban house next door.

Like I said, I'm not a supporter BUT you have to look at the alternatives.

That is the trick that many used to stay in the US. Come across when you are in labor, have a US-born child and then bring the rest of the family. I have no problem with legal immigrant's children born here becoming citizens at birth, but I do not fell that should be extended to children of illegal parents. I would send all of them home and when the kid is 18, then he/she can return.

BTW I am glad that Bush is finally doing this. They can comeback, but via the legal channels.

I'm not against immigration, just illegal immigration. Why should they be allowed in in higher numbers than other nations? Just because we share a border? I know people from India who wait years to get her legally. My kin came legally.
