A friend is going to Disney in a couple of weeks and is staying offsite.

She is a Disney newbie and doesn't know about fastpass. Are the machines still there or not? Can she use the park tickets that she is going to get at Walmart to get fastpasses. What other options besides staying on site will she have?

The legacy (paper) FastPass system is no longer in use. The machines that have not yet been removed are covered up.

No paper FP left in the parks.

She can get FP+ at a kiosk with her park tickets, subject to the same FP+ rules everyone else has to follow. She gets 3 in one park per day, all booked at once. In MK and AK she can choose any 3, in DHS and Epcot she must pick 1 from tier 1 (popular attractions) and 2 from tier 2 (less popular attractions).

No paper fastpasses any more.

If she isn't staying onsite, she can book FP+, just not before she arrives at the park.

She will most likely have to stand in a long line just to book her FP+s once she gets there if she is staying offsite.
I saw those lines last week and was very glad I didn't have to waste time in them!

Most reports indicate that people should skip the fastpass kiosks at the front of the park. I'm not sure of the other locations but the ones closest to the entrance reportedly get long lines.
