Are pantyhose a thing of the past?

I saw the editor of Vogue magazine on some talk show and she said she doesn't care if it's the coldest day of the year, NO PANTIHOSE! For what that's worth! ;) She says tights are fine.

I don't wear pantihose either, but I generally do what I want when it comes to fashion!

I am in complete agreement with you. I dislike pantyhose and wear them extremely rarely, but I don't need somebody telling me what I can and cannot wear. :rolleyes1 I don't care if she is the editor of Vogue. I have my own taste and my own comfort to guide me.

You know, in winter, you could always just wear pants to church.

For those of you interested in Spanx:

SPANX, Inc. is a U.S. company which mainly manufactures footless pantyhose and other undergarments for women, particularly "body shaping" undergarments designed to give the wearer a slim and shapely appearance. The company's products are marketed to fit contemporary female lifestyles and fashion trends.

I found out this past spring when I had an interview to go to. I was shocked at how small the pantyhose industry had become.

I remember when they first became popular in the 60s. It sure beat garters!!! :lmao: My AGE is showing!!!

I'm glad they're gone. Since I have a PERMANANT TAN ... ... I've gotten away without wearing them for YEARS. Hate Hate HATE THEM!!!

I wear tights if I need something and it's bitter cold (like with my knee high boots and skirts). I wear Spanx with anything that needs support and smoothing.

Otherwise, nothing on the legs.

Please excuse my dumbness, but what is the difference between panty hose and tights? I know the tights I have are heavier(?) than the hose. The darn tights are just as uncomfortable, maybe I need knew ones?

And, what are Spanx????

I'm so clothes-challenged.

I knew pantyhose are out. But, tights are back in? Sheesh. It's like Coco Channel said, "The purpose of style is to go out of style."

Until this thread, I had never heard of Spanx. I really can't picture footless hose. I mean, like, are they hemmed at the ankle? Leggins? How does that work with a dress or skirt? I really can't picture it, nor do I think I've ever seen it. Must look it up.

I think alot of people are just happy that hose are not required/expected as much as they used to be. If you feel better in nylons, by all means please wear them. :) I personally, just find them extremely uncomfortable in all types of weather. If it's really cold outside, I would skip the skirts/dresses and wear slacks. Spanx got alot of recognition because celebrities started admitting to wearing and loving them. Jessica Alba is one of those along with Marcia Cross. I have the Higher Power and they do really work and make you about a size smaller in your clothes.

I'm 37. I don't know if pantyhose are outdated, but I don't care one whit if they are or not. I wear the hot, uncomfortable things simply because I was raised to wear hose and slips with skirts and dresses, including with open-toed shoes/"strappy" sandals (just tucked the seams under my feet if they would otherwise show), and still do. Wore hose and slip even under my wedding dress, and never thought to do otherwise. When I've waitressed (family-type restaurants), certain-colored pantyhose were always part of the required uniform.

I wouldn't dream of telling/asking my mother what to wear to my wedding (or anywhere else) unless her mental facilities had declined such that she couldn't make reasonable decisions in that area on her own. I certainly wouldn't tell/ask her to dress in a way that she might feel uncomfortable doing. Not my place, for starters.

I will never understand why anyone cares whether someone else is dressed "fashionably" or not (unless your occupation requires it or something). Makes no sense to me. So long as your choice of clothing is reasonably appropriate to the occasion/venue, what could it possibly matter? JMHO. Wear pantyhose or not. Wear "mom jeans" or not. Wear what's "in" or wear what's "out." I highly doubt I'll notice. I certainly won't be critiquing you. And if my attire isn't considered "fashionable" by others... so what? I sure won't be losing any sleep over others' opinion of me in that regard.:p

I really love the colored ones :thumbsup2! Then again, I seem to be the only one that admits to be a hose/tight wearing rebel. This is said while wearing my polka dot black tights, a long denim skirt and nice comfy Born boots. As always, I am the picture of style and fashion :rotfl2:.

The tights are fine! It's the hose that will get you nailed by the fashiionistas! :rotfl:

I was just looking at my Lucky magazine and there are tights all over it.

Well these are thinner than most tights, so if I were to decide what they'd be labeled it would be pantyhose. But hey, the package said tights, so tights they are.

Fashionistas be damned! I am my own fashionista and a legend in my mind  :rotfl2: .

I love that coloured tights are in. I wore my purple ones last week.

My mother always said it was considered trashy to wear skirts with bare legs in the winter. It was fine in the summer with sandals, but if you were wearing closed toe winter shoes you needed pantyhose (or tights). I can't imagine wearing my winter leather dress shoes with bare feet. Just seems wrong to me and I would probably get blisters. I always buy the extremely sheer kind that you can barely see. It just smooths out the skin tone and gets rid of any blemishes etc.

There are some people (especially younger people) who think they are horrid. There are others (like me) who don't.

But telling your mother what she is and is not to wear is still improper, no matter where you stand on the issue.

I love my pantyhose! I wear them under all my dress clothes, yes, even under my dress pants! I think they give a much smoother look and they are way cheaper than Spanx! I have the pantyhose that are toeless for when I wear them with open toed shoes. I think I would feel naked if I was dressed up and had bare feet in my shoes or bare legs. My girls are teens and they will still wear pantyhose with dresses/skirts, but they wear the really sheer ones, not the industrial strength, hold in the gut, butt and hips ones that I wear.

I also would never, ever tell my Mom what she should or shouldn't wear and if my girls ever said anything like that to me without my asking them for their opinion they would not like what they heard back from me. I do not comment on their clothes either without them asking for an opinion.

I'm 44 and haven't worn panty hose in 10 years. I hated them when they were "in" and was so happy when they went "out".

I agree with those who said its a personal preference thing tho. If you like 'em, more power to you. I put them in the same category as bras - hideously uncomfortable but a necessity for some people. I can get away without pantyhose, but I can't get away without a bra - if I could, I would! :thumbsup2

I hate them. I have always hated them. I hated tights as a kid. No matter what size or style you buy the crotch hangs. So not only do I have a grocery pouch, I have chub rub because the top of my thighs will touch because the crotch is sagging! :sad2: The only way to combat that is to put big granny bloomers over the pantyhose and that is just way too many layers on. I might as well wear ski pants then! Then there is the delightfull muffintop they give you with a cute seam up the middle like you are the bride of frankenstein and you want to show where you were sewn together. Now you can buy the ones that go up to your ****s so you don't have muffintop but then you look squoosed and feel like a sausage with a head.:scared: They are so tight that it cuts off the oxygen to your brain! People say that they smooth them out etc. but if they are not going to make me a size 2 then I would rather look lumpy. I avoid them at all costs. They are a cruel joke. JMHO.princess:

The wedding went well. My sister wore here pantyhose. She said she felt nekid without them on. I don't think my neice even noticed.

I on the otherhand did not wear any pantyhose.

I did notice about half the women had on hose and half did not.

I hate pantyhose and I'm so glad they are out! I only wear them for interviews when I wear a skirt suit. I also hate slips and refuse to wear them as well. I sometimes wear tights when I wear a winter skirt and boots but no other times. I remember it was a battle with my mom to give them up but now she is happy and glad she is done with them.
