Anything coming after Dennis?

I just looked at the information on Tropical Depression five from the National Hurricane Center site. If it moves as they predict, it will arrive in Florida at the same time as we do next weekend :scared1: :umbrella:

We have been going to Florida every year since 1996 but never in late July/early august. We did talk about the fact that it was hurricane season, but though that since it would still be early it would probably be ok. I'm not so worried about the 14 days we will be spending at WDW, but more so about the 7 days in Key West !

I just saw our Key West hotel on CNN last night, It looked like an island totally surrounded by water. It was so strange to see the destruction at a hotel where we have been several times and even more worrying that we're staying there in less than 3 weeks :earseek:

Hoping for lots of :sunny: and not too much :umbrella:

Leaving in 4 days......

Sorry about that!

I hope you get a good weather and lots of pixie dust!!

Living here in Fl. Maybe think about the people that actually live there!

I hope that you did not misunderstand my post. :guilty: I have very good friends in Panama city who right now are cleaning up their yard after Dennis. I just heard from them this morning and it was so good to finally hear from them again after the storm - we were soo worried.

I know we're priviledged when it comes to Florida and Hurricanes - We can just return home, those who lives there do not have that option.

That said I'm very nervous about this whole hurricane situation since I've never experienced one and don't really know what to expect. The closes thing we've got are winter storms and although powerfull they're nothing like a hurricane

4 days to go......

Being a firefighter and on duty for the last 3 hurricanes that went thru Central Florida. I worry being away from my family. Lets not forget the public safety employees that are out and working during these storms.

You're so right!! The Firefighters, police, the GA power man, or any power company man, the DOT people, to me these are the heros, the weather news people too.

We had a bad storm last week, due to Cindy, and lost power , it was pouring raining, and the Ga power man came and were out there the whole night fixing the power.

God bless them all! :flower:

As we all just saw with Dennis, hurricane paths are hard to predict HOURS in advance--much less days and or weeks!!!!
Far too soon to have any good idea if TD5 will even become a hurricane, much less strike at the heart of Florida.
It might--it might not. We watch and wait and hope for the best!!

You're from Punxsutawney, and you're asking US about the future weather?

You've got you're very own famous weather prestitigitator (am I even close with that spelling?) right in your own home town!

What does Phil say?

Punxsutawney Phil, the Seer of Seers, the Prognosticator of Prognosticators, the King of all Groundhogs, only cares about whether he is going to see his shadow or not, and so whether there will be six more weeks of winter.

Since our small town that the economic recovery left behind makes a good chunk of its cash on Groundhog Day (when 35,000 people flood the town...and leave by 11 am so any civic organization worth its montly dues sponsors an overpriced "Groundhog Breakfast"), I'm thinking a Groundhog Summer predictor in June, where Phil could tell people which weeks to go on vacation would really put the town on a roll.

Us tourists and our anxieties must drive those of you who live in Florida nuts. If you live in Florida, and vacation, say, in Punxsutawney, do you obsess about the weather?

Yes, the icy 2 lane roads of western PA are far more dangerous than the possibility of being in a hurricane for which there is all weather coverage all the time for 3 days ahead of it.

And, yes, my hubby did say "If we see one coming, we can just drive home." And---we're going down on the AUTOTRAIN.

But I do have to admit, I have a Sunday checkin to a home in Bradenton, which is owned by people in Britain, and administered by a management company, and I think I need to figure out what the procedure is if the town's in lockdown just when we're supposed to breeze up with our boogie boards.

Ditto! Conditions are favorable for it to strengthen to a Tropical Storm.....which is has to do first before it becomes a hurricane. Other than that it's too early to tell anything. :sunny:

Well, TD 5 is sooooo far out right now and there are about a million different elements that need to be in place for a hurricane to make a direct impact on Orlando. *And* even if one *did* hit here....like last year, I can tell you that Disney is one of the safest places to be. Key West, well, that's another story...as a tourist you'll be ordered to leave if it looks like a hurricane will make landfall there. And let me tell you, there are a lot of places I wouldn't mind being in a hurricane, but the Florida Keys is definitely not one of them.

Those of you traveling to Disney...I really would not worry. The only reason I'd keep an eye on hurricanes is to make sure one won't impact my flights into or out of MCO, because last year they did close the airports with all three of them. Other than that, and perhaps one lost day in the parks, it really isn't so bad.

I'm flying in Sunday evening...watching this one too. And yes, my thoughts and prayers are with those who actually live in FL too. I have a dear friend in Daytona Beach, and I know how hard the last season was on her and her family... :sad2:

TD#5 is named Emily, word is to be upgraded to a tropical storm today :scared1: :scared1: We leave on Friday, guess I have to pack my Mickey umbrella :umbrella:

While it is still very early, it looks like TD#5 is taking a better aim at the peninsula of Florida than Dennis did. Let's cross our fingers and hope it dies.

Yup, I saw the news this morning and thought "NOT AGAIN!" I see there is #5 floating around in the ocean looking to come this way, should be a hurricane by mid-end of this week. Yikes!

Here is a great site to track incoming storms :www.stormcarib.com

It tracks all the storms from the African Coast, the emphasis is the caribbean, but we all know the storms hit there first then track up the US coast. It's a heads up as to what is on the way.

It dosen't look promising certainly, but let's wait and see. I recall a few years back one such hurricane (I don't recall the name) was taking "dead aim" at WDW--some even had the eye heading straight toward the Castle!! But then about 24 hours before everything was to fall apart, it took what they like to call an "unexpected turn" and didn't even strike Florida, much less WDW. I believe it finally made landfall somewhere in the upper part of the Carolina's.

You're quite welcome. I live in Orlando and got through all three last year just fine. Charley was by far the worst, but Disney did a fabulous job with their guests. In fact, as AP holders, my DH and I went over there to eat! All of the buildings held up just fine. Everything is Disney is at or above code, all the buildings have lightning rods...a really safe place.

We lost power for 7 days and after day one of no AC, we got a great Florida resident rate over at the Portofino Bay Hotel and stayed there until our power came back on. We went there because they take pets....and they were *wonderful* over there too.

I just can't imagine our area seeing anything worse than Charley...100mph winds that far inland.

And while I know that hurricanes are awful, I do think that the media hype brings the panic up to unnecessary levels. I had two strangers ask me on Saturday if I was ready for the hurricane. Um, no....we're not even *getting* the hurricane here. I mean, we're overcast, breezy and did get some squalls through here, but our regular thunderstorms can be much worse.

Enjoy your vacation!

Also wanted to thank you for the reassuring information.

We will be down on 9/24 for 10 nights and everyone keeps telling my husband it is a bad time to go to Florida because of the hurricanes. It is driving me crazy. We are specifically going those days to celebrate our childrens birthdays (9/27 & 10/3)--cannot change them.

Thanks again.

Thanks so much for your words of wisdom. We are arriving in Tampa on the 16th and going to Orlando on the 18th. I have been on pins and needles. One day lost would be ok with me, just as long as we are all safe.

"prognosticator"
I give these guys a little credit they try hard with the best of science, but I wouldn't get worried until 24 hours before predicted landfall.

Look at these tracks of some of the most deadliest ever..
