Anything coming after Dennis?

Oh crap, if it gets to Tammy, I'll never hear the end of it. Especially if that creeps up to our aug trip.

Newchic99 aka Tammy

Imagine all the Jeanne jokes I got last year. ;)

We won't know any thing really until Friday. They should have a better handle on the computer models. Right now the cone of possibility is 800 miles wide.

Thanks for the info. With the way WDW handles things during a storm you almost (just almost- not really) want a storm to come through so you can see how they take care of you. My fears have been calmed. Thanks to everyone for the input!! :grouphug: :cheer2: :cool1:

Also so you feel even better, WDW does not lose power, everything is underground. People evacuate the low lying coastal areas and go to the WDW/universal (Orlando) hotels for safety. The buildings are hurricane proof..The storm itself lasts about 6-8 hours and depending on where the eye is, maybe an hour of intensity..the rest is squalls, winds and periods of rain from light to driving. When we were in the GF during Jeanne, we were in a honeymoon turret 5th floor main building...we saw the storm come in. The room was actually swaying..I got a little nervous so I called down to the desk and they told me not to worry, the buildings are built to hurricane specs and the building is designed to sway. That was kind of freaky to lay in bed and have it feel as though you were on a boat.

We saw so many locals checking in during the hurricane, WDW gives them special rates so they can ride out the storm in safety.

You cannot be any safer or secure than there..

And when the storm blows out the weather is cooler and less humid and sunny!

So, you had your own ride right there in your room?
Thanks for the laugh today. I am sure it wasn't funny then and I would have been a nervous reck. I told my husband if a storm gets close we might leave early (if we can change our flight around) to beat it so we can already be there when it hits. He thought I had lost my mind. "Try to go early so you can be there during the storm?"
Thanks!!! No more worries here. :earboy2: :cool1: :sunny:

Yeah, my mom thinks I'm crazy for wanting to go early and be there during the storm. I just want to make sure we get there. :cool1:

Being stranded in a Disney World Resort for a little longer than planned would be great :wizard:
Being left out would be very bad :sad2:
I hope all of this is over with by October!!!!

Me too. Hopefully it will be beautiful partly sunny skies and high temps in the 80's. (yeah right - ok 90's).
This will be my second time on an airplane and I have no idea what it would take to get my flight changed if needed. So I just hope it isn't needed. :goodvibes

Not to freak anyone out and not that I am worried any more
but just so that everyone is updated:

In the eastern Atlantic, two more disturbances are trailing Emily. Only one, however, appears to have a chance to develop further over the next several days. It's currently located about 300 miles WSW of the Cape Verde Islands but has very little convection associated with it.

gonga,

Thanks for the great reviews of what it was like. We leave this weekend. I'm not too worried, but I'd defiantely prefer no storms. We usually go in November/December and we barely get a drop of rain let alone a storm. I'm just trying to get used to the idea of Thunderstorms everyday. I really wasn't even thinking at all that I'd have to contend with multiple tropical type storms/Hurricanes.

Thanks!

Where are you getting this new info? On-line? I am trying to find the best sites to keep up with.

I was one of those locals that checked in during hurricane Frances. I made reservations at the beginning of the week when they said it looked like we might get hit. When we checked in on Thursday, they were no longer taking reservations. I asked if they were full. I was told that they were no where near full, but that they would only take so many guests other than those already there because they would be short staffed for the duration of the storm. We did not get a special rate. That may have been true of some other hotels, but not Disney.

Thanks for the links. The will probably be put to good use over the next week!

Looks like the current path is taking Emily toward the Yucatan

But considering the paths can change drastically (check Back2Disney's links on #40 of this thread  ) I'm still glad we decided to drive down early instead of flying in Sunday night...

We're checking into the Polynesian on July 24th. My husband is really nervous and says that HE WILL NOT risk the life of his family to see Mickey Mouse. As you can guess he's not as excited about our trip as I am. This will be my 3rd trip in as many years and will also be our daughter's first trip. DH hasn't been since the 70's so he has no idea how relaxing a Disney vacation can be. Anyway, I am hoping that no storms develop for the rest of the year. I think folks have seen enough destruction. Keep the updates coming guys....

and when I watched the news last night - it seems as though Emily was moving pretty darn fast!

Just wanted to follow up with on the few people concerned about the possibility of hurricanes.

We flew into Orlando the morning that Charley hit.

We stayed at the All Star Movies and I must say other than a few bad gusts of wind that shook the window and whistled under the door it was not very bad at all. It may have been worse had we been on the outside of the buildings. We were facing in to the center of the buildings. But we did not hear of any damage done to any rooms ( it may be that we did not hear anything and there was damage done though).

My kids were nervous probably more from the weather reports we were watching than the actual storm although the wind under the door did send them hiding in the bathtub :)

We were quite shocked when we got up the next morning and noticed all the downed trees and the pool full of bark stripped from the trees. It really did not seem from our room as if it was that bad.

I have a few pictures from around the hotel the morning after if anyone is interested. The forum will not let me post the URL until some minimum number of posts is made. If anyone is curious I can try and post the URL in a followup.

Overall the stay was excellant. The disney staff was exceptional through the hurricane. As others have said the characters came into the lobby for the kids. The restaurant was open for most of the night I do not remember if it stayed open all night but we did purchase sandwiches and drinks in case we needed them. They supplied us with a flashlight and periodic reports on the phone about the storm. When we checked out they refunded us 50% for the night of the hurricane.

Once the weather got bad we just headed to our room to wait it out.

It turns out we didn't need the sandwhiches. The restaurant was open the next day. Most of the parks were open the next day (We went do Disney). Animal Kingdom and the water parks were closed 1 or 2 days but it did not effect our vacation we just went to the parks that were open and headed to Animal Kingdom and the water parks later in the week. Other than a few closed rides and some downed trees most things were normal.

One previous poster mentioned the power. We headed to a local grocery store to pick up some things for the room and items that we had forgotten to pack. While in line we were talking with a couple from Orlando that had headed to Disney property because most places around Disney had no power.

For what it's worth the hurricane was a non issue as far as affecting our vacation and I would not be concerned about heading to Disney with an approaching hurricane again although it terrified me before we left.

Scott

Thanks for the post. I hope we get enough post to get your pics. I would love to see them. When there is damage at Disney I just thought that they didn't let the press know so that people wouldn't cancel their trips there during an upcoming storm. I am not worried about it any more but would rather have great weather. :goodvibes
Keep this tread going.....
:cool1: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Since I'm from Puerto Rico, I'm watching everything, not only the ones that could get to Florida!!! :earseek: So it's getting pretty exausting with all this info about Emily and the things getting out from Africa. :sad2:

I'm hoping that that just be a little bunch of clouds....Nothing more.... :goodvibes ...Take care everyone and enjoy your Vacations.. :cool1:
