Does anyone work in the Infomations Systems department? I need someone to ask questions to for a homework assignment for school? Here the questions.

1. Is the employee a programmer, system analyst, computer operator, or supervisor?

2. What kinds of computer equipment does the person work with?

3. What pirpuse does the computer system(s) serve in the organiztion? What tasks does it perform? Who uses the ouput from the system(s)?

4. How has mainframe computing changed since his or her organiztion first used computers?

I just need the answer to the questions.

Thanks in advance:D

I do some computer work but I'm not in an IS department, I do support for marketing and work within that department. If that would work I can answer some of the questions as best I can. I've used mainframe computers for :gulp: more than 15 years and although that platform hasn't changed much the use of it and the increased use of other platforms has changed very much.

Thanks for answer some of questions. If answer anymore of them that would be great.

Thanks

1. Is the employee a programmer, system analyst, computer operator, or supervisor?

I'm trained as a programmer, but I currently supervise and monitor the contractors that develop and maintain our information systems.

2. What kinds of computer equipment does the person work with?

Our applications are mostly web-based, accessed through desktops and laptop computers issued by the university.

3. What pirpuse does the computer system(s) serve in the organiztion? What tasks does it perform? Who uses the ouput from the system(s)?

Our systems run the gamut - they maintain personal information on students, faculty and staff, as well as military and civilian service records. We have a registration system for registering for the university, as well as a system for applying for admittance to individual classes. We have software that assigns students to classes based on race, sex, branch of service, country of origin, military or civilian status, rank, etc. We also have systems that handle the "back office" work - inventory, invitations to events, gifts (both those given and received), etc.

4. How has mainframe computing changed since his or her organiztion first used computers?

I have no idea on this question - I've only been here a couple of years, so I don't know what they did back in the days when mainframes dominated.

1. Is the employee a programmer, system analyst, computer operator, or supervisor?

IT Manager that also does inventory control

2. What kinds of computer equipment does the person work with?

Dell Dimension Dektops

3. What purpuse does the computer system(s) serve in the organiztion? What tasks does it perform? Who uses the ouput from the system(s)?

Inventory Control, Database Management, Service Repairs

Mechanics, President

4. How has mainframe computing changed since his or her organiztion first used computers?

We've never had mainframes, we just recently went digital over the past 5 years

I am the MIS Manager for a community bank. We do not employ programmers, but I have 4 system analysts that report to me, and 4 computer operators.

2. What kinds of computer equipment does the person work with?

We run Compaq servers and an array of desktops. In total, there are about 350 PCs and servers on our network.

3. What pirpuse does the computer system(s) serve in the organiztion? What tasks does it perform? Who uses the ouput from the system(s)?

We do not use a mainframe. We outsource our processing to another company. Our primary host interface allows us to process monetary transactions and perform maintenance and inquiries to the database. All applications are client/server utilizing either Novell or Windows as our NOS. Applications allow us to create new account documentation, analyze financial data before a loan is given and after it is in servicing. We also have an automated HR package, financial accounting system, item processing system, and automated teller machines. Output is retrieved through report archival software and a data warehouse program. It is used by management and various departments throughout the bank.

4. How has mainframe computing changed since his or her organiztion first used computers?

We have never used a mainframe in our shop, as we have always outsourced our data processing. What I will tell you, though, is that 15 years ago, we could access data through a CRT terminal and nothing was updated during the day and very little could be retrieved in the form of a special report. Today, we have online realtime information for both internal transactions and for ATM transactions. We have access to every master record item that resides on the host mainframe and we can create reports on the fly for our senior managers. Of course, processing speeds have also increased as time has gone by.

Good luck with your class.

I'm a supervisor and a developer.

2. What kinds of computer equipment does the person work with?

Hardware -- HP servers / Dell and Gateway laptops. Software -- Oracle Financials 11i with TOAD as our development software of choice.

3. What pirpuse does the computer system(s) serve in the organiztion? What tasks does it perform? Who uses the ouput from the system(s)?

Our system serves as the Financial System for the entire North American region of our firm. All employees use at least a portion of the system in one way or another (at minimum, they all enter their Time and Expenses into the system).

4. How has mainframe computing changed since his or her organiztion first used computers?

I haven't used mainframe computers since my first job out of college (in '94).

Well, kinda, for right now. :)

1. Is the employee a programmer, system analyst, computer operator, or supervisor?
I am an Systems Analyst and a Programmer.

2. What kinds of computer equipment does the person work with?

I work in a Windows 2000 PC Environment. We use Dells and Compaq computers if you need specifics.

3. What purpose does the computer system(s) serve in the organization? What tasks does it perform? Who uses the ouput from the system(s)?

We use computers to receive and track information, to record customer requests, to create reports, and to produce products for our customers among other things. The computer is an integral part in our organization, it enables our company to do the things it does - without them we wouldn't be able to function as efficiently as we do. My company does Stock Market Trade clearing, so our direct customers are the brokers that work the stock market and indirectly the general public, who use the information we give to the brokers for tracking their accounts.

4. How has mainframe computing changed since his or her organiztion first used computers?

There are still mainframe computers used at some of the brokers we service, and at the provider we use to get our data. I know for a fact that all of our functionality was once on mainframe but has moved away from there with the general paradigm shift that the rest of the industry has used. In general I would think the remaining brokers don't switch over to a PC environment because of the manpower and dollar cost of such a change.

Thanks in advance:D
Your welcome.

I'll try to answer as it fits :)

1. Is the employee a programmer, system analyst, computer operator, or supervisor?

A programmer is the easiest description.

2. What kinds of computer equipment does the person work with?

IBM compatible mainframe, Unix operating system and PC's.

3. What pirpuse does the computer system(s) serve in the organiztion? What tasks does it perform? Who uses the ouput from the system(s)?
The mainframe systems are the core business which is insurance and some other services. The customer data and actual business transactions take place there. There are systems on the front that use the point/click of the PC to enter data into the mainframe. I use the mainframe as a place to get data. Other's use the data for customer transactions and maintenance.

The Unisys system is used by marketing to process marketing campaigns. It has a Proprietary Database system that is designed for marketing applications. I use that and sas programming to build databases for the users which are marketing analysts and processors.

4. How has mainframe computing changed since his or her organiztion first used computers?

The organization I'm with now and the one previous both used mainframes for data entry and almost all processing when I started working with computers. Now they are used mainly to store data and do the heavy work that is still batch processed. More and more companies have moved away from the mainframe as they are very expensive and not as flexible as a LAN or Unix based system. So many older companies have their customer maintenance and systems on mainframes it is too costly to change. They have decreased their usage and do more using front end systems to feed data to the mainframe. Unlike years ago when clerks had CRT's on their desk they now have a PC and it interfaces with the mainframe.
