Anyone shopping for prom yet?

Dd20 would shop with a friend, I was remote. I still have PTSD from shopping for her communion dress when she was 8.

I hear you. I told her I was shuddering at the thought of dress shopping without my phone as a distraction. She didn't care as long as I remembered my wallet. ;)

I remember communion dress shopping too! Yikes that seems so long ago.

I actually made that one, and enjoyed every minute of it. :) But yes, we're definitely light years past that time.

It's not always so easy. My friend's daughter posted her dress, not realizing someone else already posted the same dress. The backlash was unreal (from a lot of girls). It's not always that easy to just wear the dress.

Thankfully that wouldn't happen here. It's one of the things I like about my daughter's school.

LOL, last year when shopping for my dd's Senior prom dress she had me take a picture of her in the fitting room so she could quickly post it on FB so nobody else would get the same one.
I told her that I didn't care if 20 girls have the same one, after what we went through to find one she loved she was going to wear it!

Im waiting for Niece to get ready. We are going shopping right now (teacher in service day-they have off). We will hit Windsor in the mall (which I hate-it looks like dresses for prostitutes in training) and I will drag her to Nordstrom's rack.

Never heard of Windsor so I looked it up and there is one near me. Looked at what they had and I agree with your opinion. (Actually a couple of the two piece dresses weren't so bad).

We were at Windsor on Tuesday and I concur with that as well. My daughter didn't find one single thing she even wanted to try on there.

Yup and that is reasonable compared to some of the dresses other girls chose. $300 - $400 is average, some girls get less expensive, some more expensive. One of my daughters friends paid almost $600 for her dress!

Interesting about posting dresses so as not to duplicate. Here ASB hosts a page for anyone elected to court as matching dresses there would not be a good thing, and DD shops with and/or shares pics of her dress with her group of friends, but I've never heard of an attempt to do anything like that on a school wide basis. Of course with a student body of 3,100+ I don't think it would be feasible. It seems there are a few duplicates every year, and it is what it is.

DD just bought her homecoming dress last weekend, not thinking about prom just yet.

Here the posting of the dresses is unofficial. Just something on facebook and I believe instagram. Pictures are slowly being put on. When my daughter went on the unofficial page of her friend's school she did see one dress that she is thinking about getting. Now if this were her school page obviously then she wouldn't get it. Last homecoming two other girls had the same dress as my daughter - not the end of the world but she would like that to not happen for the prom.

Ouch! Those are practically wedding dress prices.

DD has found a dress she LOVES online. She wants to buy it RIGHT NOW. It is $260; she is not sure what size she takes, and who knows what it will look like on her. There is a 10% restocking fee for returns, and we'd have to pay shipping to ship it back. She is super mad at me because I asked her to look at/try on dresses in our town before we order one online.

ETA: This is the dress she wants. She said she is going for mature and elegant this year. I am just not sure how flattering that neckline is.

I told my Daughter it's close to time to start shopping for prom dresses and she informed me she wants to wait to go to Prom when she is a senior (she is a junior this year).

I'm kind of relieved. She has inherited the plus size football shoulders from the guys in my family and would probably need to have quite a few alterations to fit her lower area when she has to buy a dress to fit up top. And she hates strapless.

Next year will be challenging for sure.

Those are average prices here. I spent $1500 on my wedding dress 20+ years ago, now they seem to cost considerably more.
That depends on where you shop. Many people come up with more affordable options.

It's a tough call. Trying on some does help them know what they like. Last year DD loved one online. We tried others on and she was sure she wanted the online one. We ordered and it hurt her neck and shoulders so we mailed it back and had a restocking fee. I said no more online dresses.

Now other DD has tried some at the stores and really liked one online. I did too and was tempted to give it a try again. But today we went to try one from Facebook that we weren't sure about and were still leaning toward the online one. She put it on and it was amazing so I'm happy we had the chance to try it on before we ordered a dress. We did look at the size chart for the online dress and one matched her waist and bust so it may have worked. I probably would have ordered it if we didn't get the swap dress, and returned it if we had to. But you just never know till you put the dress on.

Anyway as of today we have dresses for both girls. Now on to shoes etc.

I'm actually sort of starting to look at wedding dresses and the prices are all over the place. The one that is currently DDs favorite runs about $550. I paid $1,000 for mine 27 years ago. There are a lot of choices at lower price points. Of course, there are also dresses over $10,000 as well.

Now for shoes...we need to buy shoes before hemming the dress. I was leaning towards metallic sandals but she wants nude. The big question is flats or heels. The boyfriend is short, but she says she doesn't care if she's taller. I'm pushing flats for comfort. She says no one dances in shoes anyway. Maybe we'll start looking in a few weeks when there might be sandals in the stores.
