Anyone shopping for prom yet?

Hi. Just wondering if anyone here or your children has been shopping for prom - mainly prom gowns? We just started a few days ago and pretty much hit up all the stores I could think of. Saw a few that we liked in a bridal store but they were very pricey. Saw a few in David's Bridal that my daughter liked but didn't love but they were much more affordable. As of now we're avoiding buying online from "prom type" stores because my daughter knows people that have had problems. I'm also curious as to what alterations cost because so far it's not included with the price of the gowns. This was so much easier when my son had prom!

I just started looking, but I am not happy. There are some lovely dresses out there, but I really have no desire to spend anywhere near the $500 a lot of them cost. Anything I have seen in the $100-150 range is just horrible - both in quality and taste.

We found DD's prom dress last week at Good Will. It is absolutely gorgeous. We have to have it dry cleaned and tailored. But it was $10.

I second the Goodwill suggestion. My kids aren't prom age yet, but I have to go to a lot of black-tie events for work. I find tons of nice, newer, in-fashion dresses at our local Goodwill stores. It's not a big deal to have dresses tailored to fit perfectly when you only paid $9.99 for them!

The good will by us is just terrible! I have never found anything good there (ok, I did find one cashmere sweater-but that was a one-off). There are some "vintage" shops I could hit up, but they are even more expensive. I am not paying that kind of money for a used dress, even if it is YSL. I don't care!

My dd is a freshman in college but her boyfriend is a Senior in HS and she will be going to his prom. She is just going to wear her Senior prom dress. When shopping for her we looked at a variety of stores and tried to keep the budget under $200. I had great luck at Camille La Vie/Group USA. We went to 2 different stores and they were both huge and filled with dress in different styles and budgets. If you have a store near you it is worth checking out, we drove over an hour to each of them but dd found the perfect dresses there, in our budget and not needing alterations.

Also you can check Facebook for groups that sell gowns, or check local places that may run a gown swap. One local HS here does that every year.

Haven't heard of that but I will go check now. Okay - the closest store is over two hours away in NJ. Looks like we can maybe order online if there is something she likes. I just looked quickly and the prices seem reasonable. I also can see there are some styles that she would like. Thx!

No prom for us yet, but I just went shopping with my daughter last night for a court warming dress. Saw such pretty dresses at Dillard's. Can't wait to be shopping for a long dress in the next couple of years (although in no hurry for that time to pass).

I'm about 20 minutes away from there, lots of girls get dresses there. I need to bring dd14 in for her 8th grade dance dress.

Yep! One down, one to go. We found DD18's on a prom swap on Facebook. While we were in the city to meet the girl, we also stopped at Dillards, and three specialty shops, so DD wouldn't feel like she bought the first thing she saw. Fortunately, DD18 didn't find anything else she liked better, so she has a Tony Bowls dress for $130.

Unfortunately, DD15 found a dress at one of the specialty shops that she LOVED and it was $629. So we've been hunting the swaps, promgirl.com, Amazon, and Dillard's for similar dresses. Right now we really like one on promgirl. It is $299 which is pretty much my upper limit. I wanted to stay under $200, but if it means the drama is over, I might go up to $300. We contacted a girl with a used dress but weather kept us from meeting and then she sold it to someone else. There's another used one she likes but it's 1.5 hours away and $250 so we haven't gone to try it on. You can spend a lot of gas money running around after the used ones too. (We're rural, so not very many close by to us.) We checked 3 Goodwills on Sunday and only found one dress that was reasonably fashionable and good shape, but wasn't her style at all. We look at formal dresses at thrift shops year round, though, and have not found much. DD did get her Homecoming dress at Salvation Army. I think most girls try to sell them rather than donate.

I am leary of buying online as it hasn't worked out in the past for DD18, but DD15 has more standard body proportions and the size guide on promgirl for that dress has a size that matches her measurements. So if we don't find anything after a while, I may try ordering it and return if needed. I really do love it and think it would be wonderful on her.

The other thing is once we get into February, Dillard's will add a few hundred more styles and they can have some reasonably priced ones. Since we have a Dillard's nearby, she can try on there, or I can order and return at the store. So I might wait for them to load more dresses to their site. DD18 got her dress at Dillard's last year for $229.

Macy's has some reasonably priced ones too, but we don't have one near us.

As far as alterations, my mom does it so it doesn't cost me. DD18's dress probably won't need any. We need to have her put it on again and make sure everything's good. DD15's dress will almost certainly need hemmed, as she is 5'1".

DD15 is looking for a navy dress, not strapless, with a full satin skirt. Pockets are a plus. If we get one without pockets, I'll ask my mom if she can add some, using material taken off the bottom.

Do you know when in February that Dillards adds dresses? I actually saw a few online that looked nice. Thx

DD is not shopping yet. Two years ago (when a freshman....invited by a junior) she got her dress, shoes and bag at Goodwill for $14. Score. Last year, we got one at TJ Maxx....$99 (when the Bloomingdale's price a the SAME TIME was $500).. Wore the same shoes from the year before. I LOVE my daughter's sensibilities. Given that we're now on our third prom, and have spent a grand total of $113 for the first two years, I'm pretty comfortable with giving her a little more leeway this year. LOL.

Scored an $800 dress for $199 at Nordstrom Rack - stunning!
For other dances this year I cant say enough good stuff about Rent the Runway - renting dresses has been great for us.

I was thinking of doing rent the runway

I think gradually through the month. I just remember that when DD bought her dress on 2/1, there were 2-300 long dresses on their site. Right now they have 290-ish, so that sounds about right. In the next few weeks I kept looking at their site even though we had one bought and want to say they had up to 700 choices in long dresses at some point in February. So I felt maybe we had shopped too early! But she was very happy with her choice.

Thx I know my daughter is anxious to get hers before the majority of the girls go shopping. They are posting their dresses on a site once they purchase to try to keep the duplicates down.

Oh, and DD's BFF got hers at Dillard's last year, from the women's formals section instead of the Prom section, so that's another place to check. A lot of those styles start at size 4, so I expect they'll be too big for DD15.

Younkers and JCPenney have some, not necessarily the fancier ones.

Yeah as soon as DD got hers she showed a picture to every girl she could. We felt good knowing it was the only one of its kind in store that day, and every time we went to the mall after, we didn't see any more in stock. And it wasn't duplicated. I have seen a few listed from other towns on the FB swaps though.

There is more risk of duplication with a Dillard's dress because they don't register them and they carry a smaller variety of dresses in many sizes rather than like a specialty shop that has a random assortment of individual dresses.

I get antsy about getting the dresses bought too. If we decide we need to order online, we need to get it here sooner than later in case it needs to be returned or altered. I obsess over looking for dresses more than the girls do but I have fun doing it!

My niece went last year and was able to find hers online and then had it fitted and altered. This is what she bought. It really is even more beautiful in person. She only paid $189 when she bought it, and then the alterations were free (done by a family friend). I gave her a small silver clutch I have for military balls and also silver shoes. She got tons of compliments on it.
