Anyone On Here from Vestal, NY?????

I don't live in Vestal but I do live nearby. This article was on my fb newsfeed this morning: http://www.wbng.com/home/District-Tops-The-List-177001081.html?llsms=23071&c=y I'm not particulary familiar with the schools but you can research the "report card" for the area.

Vestal is nice for what it is. There are lots of shops and activities nearby, the usual restaurants etc. There is an amazing movie theater that has great reclining seats that are sooooo comfy!

Hint: make sure you are aware if the place you are looking at was flooded or not. Sept. 2011 was a bad year for this area and a lot of places in Vestal flooded with the rains. This is NOT normal for the area and they called it the 100 year flood (meaning that it would only happen once every hundred years). I just don't want you to be surprised if you buy a place and then notice water damage. Then again, you might get a cheaper price because of it. IDK.

Good luck!

Better look at that issue VERY close! Weather experts are now saying that the "100 year flood/storm" are a thing of the past. We have had 2 hurricanes in the last 2 yrs, each on/around Halloween! Be very cautious!

I went to Binghamton Univ a while ago and had a car all four years there. I did quite alot of exploring back then. I think Vestal (south of Vestal Parkway) has some real nice housing stock and schools are excellent. I think its a no brainer.

Many of the University professors live there...

So we went to Vestal yesterday, and I have to say, we weren't reallly impressed. I don't mean to offend anyone but we really didn't see any "areas" where we would be happy living. We didn't see any areas where the doctors, lawyers, engineers, would live. We only were able to see a few houses and those were nice but they were few and far between.
These houses were for lack of a better way of describing it were "inland" from where the strip of retail is that has the walmart, target, lowes, old navy.
I understand in 1 day you cant see everything and most of the time we were on our own because the realtor had another appointment but......
We haven't ruled it out yet and will go back with the intent of spending a whole day with a realtor but based on what we saw yesterday, I cant see us relocating there.
We drove by the vestal schools and they looked nice.

Am I correct to say that after you get off that rd.(vestal parkway:confused3) that there really isn't much else in regards to retail?

Thanks again for all the information in this matter. I really want to try to make this work for us because prior to going yesterday, DH was really excited about the job prospect but now we just aren't too sure.

We lived in Stevensville PA for about 7 months when my husband got a job offer there. We came from NJ and this was definitely a big change for us. The closest Walmart was 45 minutes away in Vestal lol. We enjoyed having mountains in our backyard and no neighbors for about 2 months. Then it just got very boring, I actually looked forward to going to Vestal because it felt more "normal" for lack of a better word. But honestly I don't think I could have lived there either. And I never could get used to the accent, but then everyone said we talked too fast lol.

I am from a small quiet town in NJ but I guess I am still too "city" to live out in the country! We moved back and now I have 3 shopping malls within 15 minutes of me and I love it! I do think my husband misses being able to open the back door and go hunting though.

If you do decide to move perhaps renting a house for a few months would be a good idea. You would be able to get to know the area and may find a nearby town or a house that you really love.

If this is your attitude then you'll fit right in with most of Vestal :rolleyes2

I think it was meant to imply that you only want to live near your own kind........doctors, lawyers, engineers and not the poor regular folk! And that the town of Vestal is filled with stuck up people so you will fit right in.

ROFL sorry that is not how I feel about you just what I thought when I read it......just poking fun

Thanks for the explination:lmao:

I guess if pp calls both me and DH unemployeed being stuck up then guilty as charged!!! I only brought that up because most of what we saw was our own kind...poor regular folk and NONE of the doctor, lawyer, etc. type. We looked in vestal because that is what was where it was stated here that thats where they live. Just shocked cuz we didn't see it.
Oh well it is what it is!!!

Most of the doctors, lawyers, engineers and even nurses commute to the area rather than live there. You will find those types out in the rural community a bit more I think. Good luck.

A lot of doctors and lawyers live in Vestal. The houses wouldn't be right near the Vestal Parkway; they would be up one of the hills a bit. Some houses are quite large, but others are not. You wouldn't necessarily look at some of them and say "Ooh, a doctor must live there." The Vestal area is not like living near New York City. Even people with good jobs make less money, and spend less on housing.

The area near BCC (Broome Community College) is starting to get built up a bit for retail. Also, there is a mall in Johnson City if you are looking for clothing. But yes, the Vestal Parkway is the biggest retail area.
