We may be relocating to Omaha, and I am a little nervous. I have been serching endlessly on the net for all the info I can find. We currently live in Baton Rouge, and my DH had two job possiblities one in Omaha & one in Colorado. I was really pulling for Colorado, but it seems like we are getting Omaha. So if anyone can tell me anything. I have been reading that the crime rate is really high? It also looks like property taxes are high, but housing is low. Thanks in advance :wave2:

I live an hour away but my husband works there You can always live "across the river" in Iowa and have lower taxes If you have any questions I may be able to help you with you can ask on here or send a PM

I live in Omaha. As they say around here, it's a great place to live but not much fun to visit! LOL! The crime rate looks bad, but it is all in one area, really. You won't be looking for a place to live there, trust me. My kids leave their bikes, scooters, etc. outside all the time and we don't worry about them being stolen. Taxes here are very high on everything, including registering your car. As for housing, I don't know how much it is where you are so I don't know how to judge. Last year they said Omaha was priced exactly where houses should be, not too high, not too low. Schools are very good here, look in the Millard or Elkhorn School District, stay away from OPS (Omaha Public Schools). We do have one of the best zoos in the country, so if you come to check things out, stop by the zoo. It's open year round and they call the Desert Dome Omaha's Epcot (you'll understand when you see it). Local real estate web sites are cbshome.com and npdodge.com. Let me know if I can help you with anything else! :goodvibes

Thanks so much for the information. I have sent PM's to both of you. Thanks again.

We've been to Omaha several times for the College World Series. The impression I got was that although Omaha is a major city, it still has a small town feel to it. The people we've met have all been very friendly. We love visiting there.

Funny you would say that. I had a friend that visited family in Omaha and she RAVED about the zoo. I had never even heard about the Omaha Zoo before, but she said it was awesome!

Don't overlook Papillion. Small town feeling, great schools-located on the edge of Omaha. The Air Force sent us here and we ended up staying after retiring.

My sis is in Papillion - it's certainly a thriving community these days! They've also been very happy there.

My sister lived there for awhile and I agree that the zoo is AWESOME! I also seem to remember a cool old town/downtown kind of place with shops and restaurants. Good luck with the snow(you know that white stuff you see on tv in LA :rotfl2: ).

Yeah you are right about that. I think we have seen snow maybe 3 times in my life, & it did not last for more then a day.

Thanks everyone for all the encouraging information. Trip - I was actually looking at Papillion thinking it looked close, but was more of a small town.
