Anyone in here decorate cakes?

I think it's very nice - and definitely better than what us "non cake-decorators" could do! :thumbsup2

I'm looking forward to see more of your cakes - as well as everyone elses.. :goodvibes

I agree!!!! Very nice!!!!

I cheat on the writing - I use the Wilton "stencils" ( http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=2104-2277 ) that you push into the frosting and then trace them over with the frosting - can never get the lettering straight or pretty without them!!!!!:)

Way to go aaArcher! Very cute! My coworker said she wants this cake for her birthday! She will be 32! :cool1:

My husband and I just made this one for our daughter's birthday this past Saturday:

That's amazing!!!! I swear - these cakes look like they're made out of ceramics or something..:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I hope no one ever gives me a birthday cake like that because I honestly don't think I could "cut" into such a work of art!!

Beautiful! :goodvibes

More photos anyone?? :)

Ladies, your masterpieces are incredible and each new cake posted is a real joy to see such lovely talent :goodvibes. Like C.Ann said, too pretty to cut!!! I know the work, creativity, and patience that goes in these master pieces and each of you are so blessed to have the gift of bringing fokes so much joy! We're very fortunate 2 of our DD's have this creative talent and it's always a joy to see what they come up with for the next family birthday :teeth:! Thx so much for sharing, your Dis friends really appreciate it! :thumbsup2

i've been lurking around this thread for a long time and just wanted to say how great it is. these cakes are gorgeous. thanks for posting the pictures. please share some more.

So, after talking to a few people who said that my cake reminded them first of a Super Mario Bros. Mushroom (lol) I decided maybe I needed a little figurine on the top of my cake.

Now, don't laugh, it's my first go with Gum Paste and omg I am not the biggest fan. Maybe because I used Wilton's Gum Paste Mix. I have a feeling if I made my own I would like it more!

But this little thing is going to go up in one of the two upper corners of the cake:

I'm going to make it a few more times, try to perfect it. It's cracking because I followed some stupid advice and put it in the oven at 150 to dry it out... it started melting the figurine!! :scared1: Yeah won't do that again. Will just leave it out to dry on it's own!

I think I'm getting into this too much... decorating cakes is actually a LOT of fun!

Great first try! Caking is certainly addicting isn't it?
Can I offer an idea for future attempts? Use a small round object, bottom of a bowl or something like that for the base - it will be hollow - wrap in plastic wrap and mold a sheet of GP around it, then cut the ears out - let them all dry. At the same time make your bow using cotton or plastic wrap balled up to get the loops to fluff out.
Then, either use GP "glue" or chocolate to adhere the parts together.
If you can't or don'thave the time to let these dry naturally I have heard of people putting them in the oven with just the light on (put a note on the stove to remind you it's in there :) ) or using a food dehydrater that is modified with a piece of light poster board (bottom plate, wrap poster board strip the height you need around it, tape, insert object, then put a top plate on).

Easy GP glue - in a tiny container with a lid put a small ball of GP in it with a little water, stir, cap, then let sit. The Gum trag in the GP will liquify and become glue.

I love making these, they add som much to cakes and GP is really great to work with. :) Just knead it to death and allow it to sit wrapped in plastic to mature the elasticity.

These are just tips I use and perhaps they can help you out too. :)

Great job and I can't wait to see the finished piece. :cheer2:

Thank you! I'm getting pretty good with my fondant but the gum paste was still escaping me! LOL I currently have it sitting in an air tight container that's been food saver bagged :rotfl:

I will definitely do everything you've said here! Especially the kneeding the heck out of it. It was still slightly sticky when I was trying to work with it and that just frustrated me to no end. It felt like no matter what I did it was still sticking to my glove!

Okay so I am the type of person that likes to practice until her arms fall off. My husband had gotten me some 8" syrofoam rounds so that I could practice this one more time before September rolls around! I wasn't doing much today so I decided to take a crack at it again. And to be honest I like this try SO much better!

100_6106.jpg

Some things to note. I did use canned whipped buttercream frosting because I didn't want to make my own again for the second practice. BIG difference. I'm not sure if it's because it was store bought or because it was whipped but it was harder to work with, and I couldn't get my lettering to go the way I wanted it too (way too soft frosting!) and that's why it looks like a jumbled mess by the word "Molly". I think I wiped that word off 5 times. The frosting is also why my fondant is sadly drooping a bit on one side... but I digress. That's actually also why my border has a slight yellow tint to it. It will be white come September.

I did use a smaller cut out for the white circles which I like so much more. I had a few people compare my last cake to the mushrooms from Super Mario Bros! :rotfl:

I am very grateful to Tweevil for the awesome gum paste tips! I took my time with it this time and kneeded the heck out of it...

And I think it turned out much cuter this time around!

The same cake over and over I know. I'm sorry if I'm being a bug in the butt. I just can't share this with my friend since it's a surprise for her and I'm excited about it!

So thanks for letting me share!

You are not a "bug in the butt". It is darling! I am sure your friend will love it.

gah! I just iced my first cake for my class tomorrow. Whaaaaat a pain in the rear! Haha, I had to keep telling myself "It's ok if it's not absolutely perfect, it's your first time!" After a few tries, it's not perfect, but it's good enough for me! Decorating will be fun tomorrow... I hope ;)

And here's another of a retirement cake for a libriarian, I even added a spine label, barcode, and tried to find a book title that made sense

Next I'll do the wedding cakes, and then the baby shower ...

some wedding cakes...

Burman_wedding_cake.jpg

The flowers were made from royal icing, I'd use buttercream now they cut better.

I remember this one, the topper was a family piece that was sooooo heavy I had to put dowels the cake in and a cardboard cut to fit under it so it wouldn't sink

lilacweddingcake.jpg
I really didn't like this cake, the colors just seemed off, but it's what the bride wanted!

Hein-Sutterwedding.jpg
I really like the colors of this cake

I have a few other pics of wedding cakes, but they were on regular film so no posting

I think you're doing an Awesome job!! Great work! Keep it up!

Keep the cakes coming! I love seeing them. Sometimes it's nice to "borrow" ideas! Heehee!

Here's a simple one that I made for my mom today for her birthday. It's my own chocolate cake recipe with my chocolate buttercream topped with hershey's kisses.
