Anyone in here decorate cakes?

I just got a copy of the Martha Stewart Wedding Cakes book from the library. Not that I get chances to make wedding cakes often, but I love looking at the pictures and I am hoping to try some of the recipes. I'll let you guys know if they are any good - or if you have already tried them, I would love to hear reviews!

Here's one I delivered yesterday for a graduation party. I wish I could have found my larger basketweave tip so my lines would be straighter, but overall I was happy with it, and the client absolutely loved it!

That is beautiful!!!!!!

I have been watching this thread, admiring everyone's cakes and creativity.

I also have been tossing around the idea of taking a class at Michael's. Just haven't taken the plunge yet!

Thanks Sharon!

You should do it! The classes are so much fun!

I did my my Granddaughters cake this weekend and the cake settled:sad1: I cant remember who posted the cake on here but I think it has been a year or so ago that it was posted.

I love looking at the cakes on this thread! All of them are so gorgeous, it's hard to believe they're real and you can actually eat them!

You cake-makers are extremely talented! :goodvibes

Angelhalo- that cake is really pretty! Are the flowers made with buttercream or fondant?

Best of luck with your class Monkeydishwasher- you will have fun!

I made the grapefruit cake with the recipe from the Brown Derby restaurant this weekend and it was really good! Not really a cake you can decorate though, just eat :) We also went to a new cupcake store that they built in town and I was so excited to check out all their flavors and to see if there was something I wanted to try and make at home. Unfortunately the cupcakes were gross! They tasted like straight artificial colors and flavoring :(

For those of you who work with it, how hard is marshmallow fondant to work with?

I'm doing a small 8" cake come September and I wanted to cover it in red fondant and put big white fondant dots all over the cake for a dear friend's birthday who loves Minnie Mouse. But I've never used fondant before, so I'm a little nervous! It's been years since I decorated a cake!

All of the flowers except the daisies are royal icing. The Daisies are made of gum paste.

Making homemade marshmallow fondant is always kind of a crapshoot, pardon my french, LOL. Every month I have at least one student who decides they are going to make homemade marshmallow fondant because it's cheaper, and it NEVER turns out correctly. If you're planning on making it yourself, I would try making at least one batch before you're ready to make the cake, that way you can play with it and get a comfortable feel for it. Then when you know you've gotten the recipe and timing just right, you can make a new batch for your cake.

I used to watch "Cake Boss" all the time, but it seems to me that his cakes aren't nearly as nice as they used to be - and compared to many of the ones on this thread, some of his recent cakes actually look rather amateur..:confused3

Has anyone else noticed this?

Do most of you do this just for friends and relatives - or do you take orders?

Gorgeous cakes here! :thumbsup2

C. Ann, I do some cakes for family, but most of mine are orders :goodvibes

I'm not the least bit surprised that people would order them.. What do you think has been your most unusual - and/or - largest cake you've done? any photos of it? :goodvibes

I think the most unusual and probably largest was a masquerade ball cake for my niece:

I think the prettiest was for a jewelry party-

I'm speechless!!!!!! You are SO good!! If someone made a cake like that for me (either one), I don't think I could cut into it to eat it! :rotfl:

Thanks! Yeah, I planned on doing a test run with it today and tomorrow, following a few videos I watched. Since I've never worked with fondant I want to make a whole replica cake now just to make sure it's going to turn out right in a month lol! I can always have my husband take it into work.

I'm just not a fan of the taste of rolled fondant, so I thought the marshmallow fondant would taste better! I'll post a picture tomorrow if it turns out okay! :)

It breaks my heart watching them being cut into! LOL!

And Thank you!
