Anyone glad they drive after witnessing the JetBlue Fiasco?

but as witnessed by this thread and others like it in past, statistical information will not sway those who prefer car travel and believe that their own driving skill is all that comes into play.

air travel continues to be the safest form of travel; those who don't like it often try to rationalize that it is not to justify their own preferences.

As someone said, to each their own - just don't try and convince me that car travel is safer than air travel.

Yet people try to convince car drivers they are crazy because air travel is safer as per your first paragraph. No one is saying that air travel isnt safer, but air travel isnt a perfect way to travel either and thats why people choose to drive.

Yeah, there are higher chances for danger, but if you leave at the right time and have your car fully inspected (tires, oil etc.) then you won't have a problem.
This is where I disagree - it is not just your car and your driving skills which come into play.

Unexpected events can occur whether driving or flying. It is all about how one handles those events.

If you are happy driving, fine. Just don't try and convince me that it is safer.

I think there are advantages and disadvantages to all types of travel, whether by air, car, boat or train.

Everyone has their own tolerance for what they will and won't put up with. Also, everyone has their own timeline for travelling.

Personally, I will continue to fly since, most of the time, it is faster, cheaper and safer. Also, it is less work for me.

Vacation time is very limited and precious to DH and me, so we don't have the luxury of spending one day (if driving continuously) or two days (if splitting the drive into two twelve hour days) driving in each direction for a vacation to Florida. Spending that amount of time driving would mean an additional two to four days of lost pay for DH, additional vacation days used at my job, as well as more time away from our dog.

Additionally, both DH and I drive into New York City for work, so the idea of doing a marathon drive at the start and end of our vacation is about as appealing as cold mashed potatoes with maple syrup.

That said, everyone has their own particular situation and should do what works best for them.

P.S. This isn't a flame, but if I were stuck in a plane on the runway for several hours whether because of weather issues or another emergency, I wouldn't claim to be having a heart attack if I wasn't. I don't think it improves the situation and seems kinda like shouting "fire" in a movie theater for no reason.

no, it simply reaffirms my support of legacy carriers and/or airlines which have a business model in place which can deal with weather situations and recover in a reasonable amount of time.
This is a good point. JetBlue, like Southwest, doesn't have interline agreements. Both of those airlines can suffer from terrible problems like this in isolation, while legacy carriers US Airways, Delta, United, American, Continental and Northwest only suffer this badly when they all are having problems. When only one of them is having problems, the others pick up the slack.

I wasnt convincing anyone, however thats hyporcricy because I can say the same thing that this thread people are trying to convince me that im automatically going to get into a car crash while driving. I myself have a strategy of driving overnight and getting to Florida early, I have never hit traffic in all the years I drove down I-95, others leave at 8am and therefore hit rush hour and have the horror stories. I understand air travel is safer, i was just agreeing with the OP, everyone else here doesnt and im not slandering them for their opinions.

I guess you do what makes you comfortable. We would rather fly and spend more time on vacation.

Statistics say it is safer to fly. But I can relate to the feeling of not being in control.

Six days is not a reasonable recovery.

Same here, theres a reason fares are $59 e.w....

NYDisGuy I've read this entire thread I didn't read anyone telling you that you would automatically get in an accident if you drove to Fl. In my post I told of our last drive and the mulitple accidents and delays that occured not because we were not in control of our vehicle but because someone else wasn't. If you like the drive great! Don't assume that those that have driven and been delayed because of accidents are only driving at 8 am.
