Anyone ever do a message in a bottle?

I thought a fun activity for our kids to do before sailing was to write messages, seal them in small bottles and then have them toss them overboard while at sea. Has anyone ever done this and if so, what's the best way to seal them?

Also, is this frowned upon? We wouldn't want to break any rules!

I believe they frown on ANYTHING being thrown overboard.

What a cute idea, though. I wonder if there is any other way to do it without having to toss them off the ship?? With the great minds on here, I bet someone will be able to come up with something. :)

Please do NOT do this.

There are HUGE fines if anything is thrown overboard from a ship. I believe I saw a figure previously on the boards of $250K per incident. That figure may or may not be correct, but I do remember it was a very large amount of $$.

It is a cute idea, but a definite no-no.

so obviously throwing it overboard would not be a good option. $250k wow.
Do you think it could simply just be released into the water at Castaway Cay?
I'm still not sure that this is a good thing to do, because technically it is polluting the waters and such. But if it is allowed, then go for it.

Absolutely frowned upon. Not only on these boards, but the governments of about 50 different countries really don't like it either.

Cruise lines and passengers get fined for stuff like this all the time.

My DD wanted to do this. I asked this question about 3 months ago and got flamed!!! People were saying that I was teaching her to pollute the oceans and kill dolphins.

I explained that we couldn't it was against the rules. She was disappointed, but she hasn't brought it up since.

So be warned that you may get some harsh replies (but I hope not!!)

Bad Idea. Check this story out

OK...guess we'll plan some other activity. It's too bad, though. My sister and her children found one near the beach in San Diego. It had contact info and they sent the people a letter and everyone was just tickled that it worked. Kind of a fun way to reach out to others.

Have you thought about sendin a "message in a bottle" to some of the schools in the places you will stop?

You can find some address' online and send them to schools and see if you get some response. That way your kids can find out about kids form other places that they will be visiting and find out what they have in common and what differences they have.

How about hiding a little something on Castaway Cay? There is at least one spot that I'm aware of on CC that is registered on the net for the geocachers out there.

I think that is a great idea (assuming it's not against some rule) and far more likely to get a reply from other people. My kids & I accidentally found a geocache when we were camping last year and it was very neat. :)

I agree with other posters...don't do it. I like the idea of burying it in the CC beach...clever.

Not the same idea but you can get the "message bottles" from Oriental T.C. and mail one from Castaway Cay post office. I know the US postal service allows it and assume the Bahamas might.
