Any states have new 55 plus communities being built near you?

Oh my post about there being unique characters at the Villages had more to do with the amount of alcohol consumption vs. the STD rate statistic. I remember being so taken aback by the amount of liquor these folks could drink. These people could out drink me any day of the week LOL

We moved to a newish one east of St. Cloud, Florida. A lot of snowbirds. I'm one of the few who aren't retired. Because I'm still working and doing a PhD, I haven't had time to do much of the fun activities they have, but there are a number of them -- DH and I are going on a luau bus trip to Daytona Beach at the end of the month.

I initially wanted the pools and exercise room, but we've been here since last July and haven't used either yet. DH enjoys the golf course.

ETA: We haven't been to Disney at all yet, either...

There are several new communities in Collin County, Texas. They offer many amenities and monthly fees that reflect them.

If I were inclined to downsize, I would consider purchasing a home in one of the communities, but I do not see myself wanting to downsize. My husband and I are only 54, so it will be 6 to 8 years before we retire, but I love having enough space for family to come and stay over the holidays.

There aren't many near me in the Detroit area, however they are prevalent in other areas of Michigan.

We don't have "communities" in our town. But we do have 55 and over apartments. My Mom lives in one that is very nice and secure. They have many activities, including music, dinners, movies, bingo, card games, and others. There is something to do all the time if you want to. It's like a little community in that everyone knows each other and they all look out for each other. They have underground parking for residents which is nice. On one floor they have a library and media room. On another floor they have a pool table, exercise machines, and a table for visiting or games. There is a huge community room on the main floor, a room for "free" items, a kitchen, and other rooms. I would retire there in a minute if my husband wanted to.

TX, DE, FL, and other states with no or favorable income tax laws will probably have the most of these type communities.

FL, yes. I live in one in Kissimme (near Celebration). It's wrapping up the building though and only a handful left. But there are others nearby.

There are pluses and minuses to living in a 55+.
