Any Pittsburghers here?

I belong to another board too where we are trying to get a group of us together to meet up somewhere around Cleveland or maybe Chicago or somewhere in between or maybe in Pgh if we can talk enuf ppl into doing it at the end of next April. Kind of a one day main event on a Saturday with optional side things planned evening before and during day after. I just did a poll on here, there and one other board for it and didnt get a huge response but enuf that if we can get the word out we might be able to pull something like a mini meet off. Approx. 40ish ppl were interested between 3 different boards.(on one board Chicago kicked butt, but only 6 ppl voted)

I would really love to get to meet some other people who love Disney also. Please let me know if anyone would like to do this. I love to plan things and wouldnt mind doing all the pain in the backside preliminary leg work on this. Tho I would warn you that I would not make it expensive to attend, so if you like to throw away money....lol

Depending on the number of ppl coming would depend on actually where we would have something like this. HUGE NUMBERS= very large hall or banquet room, SMALL NUMBERS= smaller hall (fire hall, american veteran hall, town hall) Some of those smaller halls are great because you dont have to worry about time limits or weather and cost is usually next to nothing. *case in point-I rented a VFW where I am for 25$ big enuf for 300 ppl for the whole day*

PLEASE let me know what y'all think about this ASAP so we can get the ball rolling for things like places, sponsers(?), discounts, activities, media, etc. I will be off the net most of tomo thru Sunday but I WILL get back to you all on this.

JoBird - just wanted to tell you to have a fun time in the city this weekend!! :thumbsup2

I'm so sad about Bob O'Connor. :guilty: I'm praying he goes painlessly and peacfully and the new mayor can follow in his footsteps. :sad1:

Good morning! Hey - I'd be interested in a DIS meet in Pgh!

Yep, we go to Destinta in North Versailles for movies now. Showcase Cinemas closing wasn't a big loss - it was always filthy, ripped seats, etc. It would be nice if they put some other business in that building instead of leaving it empty.

Geez, the news today - they're keeping a death watch for Mayor O'Connor. Give him and his family some peace! I guess every station wants to be the first with the breaking news. I feel so bad for him and his family; I think he would have been a good mayor if he'd had a chance. :grouphug:

It is sad about O'Connor, but the neat thing is that the guy that will then become mayor is a 26 year old. It could be neat to have "young blood" instead of the old guard running the city for a change. Hopefully O'Connor won't linger too long or suffer too much. It's hard to believe that it'll be two reigning mayors who have passed in my lifetime.

Bob O'Connor was a nice man. I did some charity events with him in Pgh. He didn't strike me as the typical political type. I will keep his family in my prayers.

As I'm sure everyone knows by now, Mayor O'Connor died this evening, and Luke Ravenstahl has been sworn in as Pittsburgh's youngest mayor ever.

It's a sad thing. He didn't have it long, but at least O'Connor achieved his life long ambition, becoming mayor of Pittsburgh. I met him twice - once at a rally for a judicial candidate, and once at my daughter's little league opening day parade. In fact, my daughter and her friends were walking quickly at the front of the line, right behind him. He was talking to people on the sidelines, and the four six year olds nearly ran over him. He found it funny.

:sad1:

 Hi juligrl and xyzabc!! Nice to know I'm not alone out here!

And yes, I DO remember the skating rink at Monroeville Mall. Wish they still had it.

Boy, do i miss that skating rink! I remember when JoJo Starbuck (then married to terry bradshaw) used to skate there.
I probably met alot of you at the Monroeville Disney Store, now closed. I worked there from 1998-2002, really miss having that store there.
So sad about Mayor O'Connor. Such a handsome man and so good for the city. He will be missed. Peace and comfort to the O'Connor family.

I've been lurking because we are from Pittsburgh (near Monroeville) and most of our family still lives in the area.

That is sad about the mayor.

About the skating rink at Monroeville Mall, we remember it well! I skated there a few times. I remember Pup A Go Go was right near the rink. Another place we remember is Daisy Donuts. I remember when Hornes and Gimbels were the end anchor stores. I worked at the mall twice--once when Kaufmanns moved to the mall (I did some of the unpaking!) and a few years later I worked at JCPenney.

In June of this year, we stayed at the Radisson near the mall. We went to the mall for a quick walk, and it changed so much!

My son, Adam, went to W&J College with Luke Ravenstahl! Luke lived in the apartment underneath Adam and they used to play poker together.
My son says he's a great guy. :thumbsup2

Hi Fellow 'Burgers!
Anyone still thinking about a DIS Meet in the area. I would definitely be up for it. I've been following the NE Ohio thread, too. I alrady travel to ALlentown in the ummer for a great meet with fellow DISers.

I loved Daisy Donuts! That was the place that my mom would always take me to get a donut if I was good (which I always was) when we went to the mall. It had the cool spinning stools by the counter. That was our special place!

To Buckylarue and JoBird

It is Monday evening! We are all probably very curious of how your weekend visits went in Pittsburgh. I hope I am correct that you were both here checking out the area this past weekend(Labor Day Weekend). Sorry about all the rain. I tried to order nice weather with the Pittsburgh Welcoming committee :confused3 :rotfl:

Magalex

I went back to the first page and found out that Buckylarue won't be visiting until a couple more weeks. I hope for better weather :sunny:

Oh, my gosh, where do I start? First of all, let me be tell each of you thank you so much for all of the advice and thoughts coming our way as we were there in the 'Burgh ( :thumbsup2 ) for the past 5 days. I have to say...I LOVE PITTSBURGH!!!!!!!!!

I had my reservations, because I had lived in new York for a while and did not care for it. However, I cannot tell you enough how wonderful and gracious everyone we met were. I think I am going to love the city, and all of the fun things there.

We stayed dahntahn (is that right? ;) ) at the William Penn Omni, and it is a beautiful, old hotel. We got in Friday afternoon and DH had a meeting to attend so I rested and relaxed. Then we met a co-worker of his at Benihana's for dinner. Saturday, we started looking at houses in Cranberry, Seven Fields, Wexford and the Treesdale area. We found two houses there that we liked, but my favorite got a contract on it before we could offer anything. The second favorite was still a contender.

Saturday night, Dh's best friend drove in from Baltimore (he's a UVA grad) and we got to go to the Pitt/UVA game. We actually went to Outback at PNC field and had drinks before, and when we came out, they were in the middle of the Panther Prowl with all of the cheerleaders, band members and old football players walking to the field. It was a lot of fun, and we went to the game. Froze our butts off, then went for a late supper.

Sunday was late breakfast, then met with another realtor for the USC, Mt Lebanon area. I think the market is cool for our price range, because we saw a lot of neat homes, but all were in need of restoration, and we don't have the energy for a major overhaul. Supper was at The Fish Market and back to the hotel.

Monday, we met with the realtor from Sunday and she showed us a neat house in Peter's Twp that would work for us, but it, too, needed more work than we could give, especially to the yard. So, we went back to the house in Cranberry and looked at it again. Talked all night about it, and yesterday, we made an offer on it! Right now, we are in the phase of counter-offers and such, but so we don't know exactly how it will turn out. It is in our higher price range, so we will see. If it doesn't work out for us with that one, something else will come along.

Thanks to all who have helped along the way. I was very sad to hear of the mayor passing. He looked like a fine, distinguished gentleman.

Magalex, thanks for the weather order! Even though it was raining, it was a nice breather from our 95 degree temps down here!

Phisigprincess, thanks for the link. I didn't get it until today, but I will still look at it.

Buckylarue, I think you will love the area! Hope you have lots of luck finding your perfect home! :thumbsup2

Thanks again, everyone! I will keep you posted!

Jodi :sunny:

Hi from Cranberry! Hopefully, we'll be neighbors soon!!! :sunny:

I thought I'd try my luck on this thread since most of us are living in the area:

Has anyone made the incredibly long drive to Disney from around here? Did you do it in 1 or 2 days? Approximately how long was it? If you stopped, where did you stop? Anyone?

I'm so glad you had a great trip! Good luck with your house offer. You will have tons of stuff to do there. My nephew was at the same game you were! :goodvibes
