Any Pittsburghers here?

I actually LIVE in the city. ;) I have lived in Shadyside since I was 3 1/2. Same house. Share with Mom. Shadyside is a lovely, if somewhat expensive neighborhood in the eastern part of the city. Best bakery in the entire tri state area, Prantal's. Best Cakes in town. All sorts of houses here, and the prices do vary. We have townhouses, condos, Victorians and later. Transportation is fantastic. I take the bus to work every morning. We have the other new Gi'nt Iggle Market Place. The East End neighborhoods are very convenient to PAT transit. I love living in the city.

As far as Mt. Lebo goes, my sister moved there from Churchill 6 years ago for the school district. Yes, it is a walking district, but the girls who do go to schools located on the busier roads walk very short distances on those roads due to all the side streets they can walk on. My oldest niece is on the Crew team and getting great grades. Massive amounts of activites for the children. Jobird, you couldn't do better than Mt. Lebanon.

Bucky, you might want to consider the city for the mass transportation since you don't drive. In the burbs, there aren't bus stops on every corner. All zone 1 in the city.

Please feel free to PM me any questions.

And loving the Steelers isn't mandatory. Just a very STRONG suggestion. :cheer2:

Hi everyone!

Thanks, sjh801 for the above links. I looked at them and they look like good schools.

We still haven't heard anything as far as the job, but we are continuing to look on-line at houses.

We found one in Peter's township that we really like, as well as one (new) in Plum Boro. Can anyone tell me the good, the bad and the ugly about these two places? I need to know it all! :)

Thanks for all of your input so far!

Jodi

Peters Twp is extremely nice area. Any one from Upper St. Clair or Peters Twp can probably give you more detail about it. I would say the commute from Peters Twp would not be too bad. If you are also looking at the Eastern half of the Pittsburgh area(Plum Boro) watch out for commuting issues to downtown. I think the monster in the Squirrel Hill tunnels have already been discussed. Also Rt 28 can be hazardous. But everyone(North, South, East, West) will have their own stories about commuting in Pittsburgh.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, I could really go for one of those burnt almond torte things right now!!!

Hey chirurgeon, I was born and raised on the South Side for most of my childhood so I think I can call myself a true Pittsburgher as well ;) Most of my family (including my mom) still live within the city limits. I would as well if it wasn't for the Pittsburgh Public school system :sad2:

HayGan,

My sister's wedding cake was the burnt almond torte. Shadyside Arts Festival this weekend. or as a friend calls it, the Shadyside parking festival. I like to watch cars slow down when they think they see an empty spot in front of the house and they realize its our driveway.

I don't have any kids, so I don't have to worry about the schools.

Steeler Game today.

Go STEELERS

Well, we just got word...

Any of you need some new neighbors? :)

I am so anxious and scared!

Thanks for all of the info you've given us so far! We will keep posting to see us through the move.

BTW...DH's start date is Sept. 1. I've got so much to do I can't see straight.

;)

We need new neighbors!!! Actually, I think the house is just for rent - though DH and I were on a walk yesterday and saw a lot for sale in the area (we're living in Mt. Lebo).

This is really funny this thread is at the top again because I was just wondering about you, Buckylarue and if you had decided anything yet. :)

Seriously, I would be TOTALLY game for a Pittsburgh DIS get together (I can't do a lunch unless it's a weekend though :)).

A Very Big Black&Gold Welcome to Pittsburgh! Good Luck with your moving :moped: Keep us posted popcorn::

JoBird, Welcome to the 'Burgh. Good luck on the house hunting. I think I saw a house for sale on my sister's street, Marshall Drive in Mount Lebanon. I won't swear to it though. Good street, lots of kids 10 minute walk to the elementary school, I think about 15 minutes to the middle school. I don't think you have any high schoolers, but 20 minutes to the high school. Great school district.

Thanks ya'll! :sunny:

Dh and I have been looking in Mt. L. and Upper Saint Clair. The schools seem wonderful. How far is it from either of those places to the stadium...? Gotta look forward to the Steelers games--immediately. :thumbsup2

You would be about 20 minutes to 1/2 hour from the stadiums, depending on traffic. Of course getting Steeler tickets isn't easy. Much easier getting Pirate tickets, Heinz Field is right next to the ball park. No comment on the Pirates playing abilities though.

I just tried to find that house on Marshall on Howard Hanna. It's not listed through them; I'm going on Realtor now. Thanks! :sunny:

I wasn't sure about the house, it could have been around the corner. My sister has lived there for 6 years and I still don't know the street names. Her subdivision is called Hoodridge Hilands. I hope that helps. Happy hunting.

Hey all! Well, I see we have one more 'Burgher household already; congrats and good luck with the move JoBird!!

I bought my disguise (a couple of Steeler t-shirts) this week. :thumbsup2 Looking thru another guidebook at various neighborhoods, and planning out where I need to visit when I'm there. I know I want to get to the Strip on Saturday morning, and got to get to Primanti's, and ride the incline; and I think I'll be checking out South Side, Mt. Washington, Beechview, Dormont, Castle Shannon, and possibly others for housing opportunities. Gotta tell ya, the more I read about Pittsburgh, it just feels right!

Just a hello to welcome the new neighbors.

Oh, Chirugeon? I live in Brookline, which is within the city limits. Since I am employed by an agency of the city, I'm required to. So you're not the only "true" Pittsburgher, but hello, anyway. :sunny:

That sounds like a great plan! You'll hit some of the most popular spots and really get a feel for the city. :) We'd love to have you in the Burgh!!!

Oh my, oh my!

My head is spinning! I forgot how much went into a move!!!!!!

You guys just might be my sanity for the next month or so! :thumbsup2

Bucky- when is it that you are going to house hunt? My mom is coming out to watch the kids for us to go but she can't come until after August 25th, so I think we will leave that weekend to go. Do you have a realtor yet?

We are waiting on the package from Dh's company to see all of the in's and out's of who we can list our house with. My house, I guess, will be on the market by Friday. Oh, good heavens, I'm a wreck!!!!

Everyone here keeps saying that we need to look into Cranberry, that it is a good palce north of the city. Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks--
Jodi :)

Jumping in here....my family lives in Wexford which is next to Cranberry and it is a really nice area. I don't know the details on your move but as far as places to live, I don't think you could go wrong looking in that area! They also have some really nice houses for "reasonable" prices. Course I live in Northern Va and anything seems reasonable compared to here! Good luck!

I will be there 9/14-19. I'm probably going to try and get together with HayGan's DH (the realtor) while I'm there, just to see what he has to say. We aren't looking at moving as quickly as you (thank goodness; it will take us until next spring to clean and prepare this house to sell it :teeth: ), but depending on what I find out during this trip, things might speed up a bit. Meanwhile, I've been reading various guidebooks and finding more websites. Here are a couple of interesting ones I've been at recently:

http://www.xplorion.org
http://www.county.allegheny.pa.us/opa/index.asp

The county assessor's office site is really interesting; you can look at the actual assessed values of houses by street name and city, and it also breaks them down by land value and house value, shows the assessed taxes for the past 3-4 years, has pictures and maps of most of the properties, gives comparisons to similar properties, etc. Only problem is, it's making me take a closer look at some neighborhoods I didn't think we could afford before, so my schedule is getting tighter and tighter!

Seriously, I would be TOTALLY game for a Pittsburgh DIS get together (I can't do a lunch unless it's a weekend though :)).

People have talked about a Pittsburgh DIS gathering before. Kennywood would be a perfect place for it! I bet we could get something together for next summer to rent a pavillion. Once you get like 100 people, they start discounting the tickets. I'll have to ask DH about it, because he was planning a big thing at Kennywood that fell through.
