Annual pass upgrade

My son and I have a package for this fall. We have a 10 night stay with 10 day park hoppers. We upgraded from QS dining plan to deluxe.
I plan to upgrade to annual passes at some point in our trip. Was told at first I had to wait until we used all of our dining credits. Now I am being told to upgrade right away so we get memory maker.

Which is the proper way?

You can upgrade at any time during your ten days. Upgrading will not affect your dining plan credits, but earlier is better for memory maker and to use other discounts.

Your ticket has nothing to do with using your DDP credits. You can upgrade when you arrive at a park ticket window or guest relations at a park/Disney Springs.
